y@NYCblueberry...I don't know what the hell a "muso" is, but Patti is not a studio singer, she is a seasoned live performer. I am a vastly experienced and educated musician myself, and I can understand what happened to her...she could hear the piano arpeggio, perhaps, at the beginning but was unable to discern where the downbeat and tonic note was...must've been a monitor problem. Could happen to anyone...
0:53 the guitarist to the drummer is like, "Dude Patti is fucking this up!" and the drummer is like, "Well what do you expect me to do about it? Teach her how to sing???" lmao
I used the Panasonic FZ7. I'm glad you like it. Thanks. By the way, I have the upgrade of the FZ7 for sale. It's the FZ18. You can google it and let me know if you're interested in buying it.
Patti Smith was wrong the beginning of the song and therefore the whole song has come out badly, it was better if Patti Smith stayed in bed that night
Bruce did not "co-write" this song, he wrote the friggin thing and then gave it to Patti, who changed a few words and named herself a co-writer. Get your facts straight people, this is a Bruce song.
it wasnt an insult. it was sarcasm. and it wasnt meant to be funny at all. i was just stating the fact that you dunno what your talking about. wasnt funny. its just. the way it is.
Don't know what I am talking about? I will take that as a compliment from someone like yourself who obviously has no idea what they are talking about. Anyways Cheers.
well i mean. you said U2 saved the 80's. which isnt really knowledge. its an opinion. and its totally ok to have that opinion. but what you need to realize is that U2 didnt save 80's music at all. if anything 80's music saved U2. your just a guy that likes U2. i like U2 too. but..lol. to save they saved the 80's is just rediculous. and un sound.
dude, obviously when I said u2 saved the 80's it was meant as my opinion. Just like it is your opinion that they didn't. I am making comments on youtube not writing an article for rolling stone.
like doggiewing said, without him they would have to start the song over. he sang loudly off the mic so the rest knew exactly where they were..than they all joined in at the chorus.
I'm sorry, but Bono saved the shit out of this song. I know it's easy to bash him, but in this case, it's not warranted. Without him, they have to start over, and you NEVER start over. He kept the crowd in it--otherwise, it's a lost cause. And Roy did his part, too--the piano kept it from falling totally into acapello.
Looks like Patti came in early. It happens. Very cool to see them all together on this wonderful song. My very favorite version of it is Bruce with Michael Stipe guesting. Amazing. You can do a search and easily find it on YouTube. Rock on.
That was painful to watch. Total shambles, these are supposed to be world class performers. It's not as if it's a complicated musical tune to get in-time with.
Yes, it is complicated. That many musicians who don't regularly play together, all singing and playing in unison. Music isn't as simple as staying in time. With that many people you have to be able to flex with one another.
Pfff, you seem to be forgetting that U2 were not the only band to play with other artists - most of the acts played with other artists. At the end of the day, they are professionals, but when compared with to other acts of similar ages, they are shown to be fairly weak.
Bono knows exactly what's going on. By carrying on he keeps the thing from completely falling apart. They all follow his lead and jump into the chorus.
Classy of Bono to stay out of it and let the songwriters Bruce and Patti share the lead vocals during the verses. Also good that he jumps in to help during the chorus, as it requires more voices in both the artists' particular versions.
What do you mean Bono stayed out of it? He was too busy miming into the audience to even notice the performance had gone haywire! I'm a big Bono fan but in recent years everything he does seems to be annoying, He is 100% why U2 are not where they wanna be, hip with today's young alternative rock audience like Radiohead ,Muse, Arcade Fire, etc If not for the great Roy Bittan this performance could have been shambolic all together!!! More evidence on why U2 don't do covers, even Bono will agree.
Fat head Bonzo wasn't listening to Larry at all!!!! how annoying is that!!!! Larry was well aware that the performance was sloppy but Bono just encourages the audience more!!! what an asshole he should listen to his band mates!!!!!!
Patti is one of the greats. We all make mistakes. It was still great to see two of the greatest performers of our time on stage together. I have always loved Patti and Bruce.
And again, these things happen all the time, it's just that in this case in particular, the camera was rolling, which somehow seems unfair.
And for the record, spending time on youtube watching videos, and then mocking and insulting the people in them, without knowing the back story, isn't very kind.
I'm not surprised at the negative comments, because if you are not a musician or work in performance, you aren't aware these things happen to everyone, all the time, even Bruce and Bono.I work for these musicians in particular, and they're all friends, especially Patti and Bruce. She did not "mess up," her monitors were feeding back, disabling her from hearing herself. There were only positive feelings on the stage, and they were all understanding, and so happy to have been able to play together.
@NYCblueberry Yes, thanks. People: Watch the 2nd take of this song to see them get it right. Patti's off at first still, but Bono gets her on track by directing her to the drummer to follow rather than a screwed up monitor.
@NYCblueberry dude dont talk such fucking shit, you work for these people, fucking wanker......here is something that will fuck up ur theory, all those muso's on that stage are wearing IN EAR MONITORS..they can clearly hear what everyone is doing....face it, she fucked up !!!! dont blame monitors, or wind direction, or the sun or any shit...she fucked up..simple....3 artist together on stage and 1 fucked up big time..thats it..no excuses...
i hate when people try to rationalize and make excuses
@NYCblueberry another stupid thing was, patty is such a hopeless muso she had no idea she was singing out of time...she was unaware of the whole situation untill she probably watched the reruns...thats the difference between a has been studio singer and a real live performer...i will agree with what some one else said, u2 saved it...they knew how to fix someones fuck ups...those are muso's..patty....well we can see what she is
@NYCblueberry...I don't know what the hell a "muso" is, but Patti is not a studio singer, she is a seasoned live performer. I am a vastly experienced and educated musician myself, and I can understand what happened to her...she could hear the piano arpeggio, perhaps, at the beginning but was unable to discern where the downbeat and tonic note was...must've been a monitor problem. Could happen to anyone
Bono handles this perfectly. He steps away from the microphone and sings the CORRECT lyrics loudly so that the others on the stage can hear what is supposed to be sung. Patti is the one without a clue.
Check out Michael Stipe and Bruce's amazing version of this song from 2004. That is the way it should be done. Bruce is probably dying inside on stage with these people.
Michael Stip and Bruce REHEARSED that song, probably to death, played it every night during the VFC tour so it came out very good by the time they performed in front of the cameras.
Patti was the one who messed up. That is so obviously.
She started singing a little bit late. You can hear it if you compare this video with the original tape of this song.
Probably she also confused Edge with her "bad" singing because he then also made a mistake. Anyway, I hope someone will put the better version on youtube soon.
Actually, being a fan of all three acts, its not Patti who is messing up, it's Edge, that's why at :56 you can see Larry telling Edge he is off. To Edge's credit he himself has said he never has been a good cover artist, at least when it comes to playing a song EXACTLY as it was written. Edge just lives in his own time signature ;)
Well, the timing is off, because the Edge went off, plain and simple. Considering Patti has sung this song for 30 + years I am sure she knows how to sing it, as does Bruce who cowrote the song. It was a flub plain and simple. Rehearsing would be a good idea too.
wow, sad to see a legend screwing up a song she has been singing for quarter of a century ago. it's fun to see how springsteen and u2 try to save her and the song! :)
looks like he stops so everyone can stop and start this disaster all over again.
Rock n roll is supposed to be crazy and spontaneous, but this is a perfect example why PRO's should always rehearse when playing with new guest artists, specially if it is not one of your songs (U2); how Bruce agreed to sing in an unrehearsed performance blows my mind.
