I am a vastly experienced and educated musician myself, and I can understand what happened to her...she could hear the piano arpeggio, perhaps, at the beginning but was unable to discern where the downbeat and tonic note was...must've been a monitor problem. Could happen to anyone...

I'm sorry, but Bono saved the shit out of this song. I know it's easy to bash him, but in this case, it's not warranted. Without him, they have to start over, and you NEVER start over. He kept the crowd in it--otherwise, it's a lost cause. And Roy did his part, too--the piano kept it from falling totally into acapello.

Yes, it is complicated. That many musicians who don't regularly play together, all singing and playing in unison. Music isn't as simple as staying in time. With that many people you have to be able to flex with one another.

I'm not surprised at the negative comments, because if you are not a musician or work in performance, you aren't aware these things happen to everyone, all the time, even Bruce and Bono.I work for these musicians in particular, and they're all friends, especially Patti and Bruce. She did not "mess up," her monitors were feeding back, disabling her from hearing herself.There were only positive feelings on the stage, and they were all understanding, and so happy to have been able to play together.

Actually, being a fan of all three acts, its not Patti who is messing up, it's Edge, that's why at :56 you can see Larry telling Edge he is off. To Edge's credit he himself has said he never has been a good cover artist, at least when it comes to playing a song EXACTLY as it was written. Edge just lives in his own time signature ;)
