  • what you mean is that sincerity and mockery are "orthogonal".

  • @muddhole777: you do know that we think that those warnings are often viewed as you demonstrating religious delusions and should be defined as an insanity, right? I do at least (I'm assuming that other atheists agree with me there, but am uncertain as I have not asked all of them individually)

  • Telling you that your going to hell is not something we hope will work on you or not. It is a WARNING and nothing more. Also we are not in hopes that we come across to you intelligent, we can care less whether we look like geniuses, or like complete baffoons. We do it for the love or our God and he alone and if that means looking stupid, then so be it. We already know we will be hated because our Lord was hated and killed before us so it is only normal for us to be treated the same way.

  • @muddhole777 "our Lord was hated and killed before us so it is only normal for us to be treated the same way."

Shouldn't you be thanking those who killed your lord? Because had they not killed him, you wouldn't have your salvation right? So in a way, shouldn't you be supporting those who mock and ridicule you after all without people willing to persecute you, you wouldn't feel happy. Why do christians love to claim persecution every chance they get?

  • i hate Oprah for the same reason.

  • Don't take this the wrong way, but you look like a dude!

  • Pigtail are hot, but not when it looks like you spend less time then I do getting ready, and I don't spend any time getting ready if you catch my drift.

  • Don't forget a voice spot at NECSS!

  • This Video should have been labeled "Pinched gets Pwned!"

  • What do you know? This video was recorded on the date that Paul Harvey died ... 28-February-2009.

  • I've never heard anything that sounds like hatred from RW's mouth. I've heard sincerity, mockery, snideness, eloquence, but never hatred.

Pinched's comment smacks of the atheists-shouldn't-speak-out-because-we'll-alienate-people argument, which is crap. We MUST answer anything unskeptical with skepticism.

To borrow from the bible, don't hide your light under a basket!

To borrow from T. Jefferson, Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions.

  • Man, sometimes all those clothes... well they just get in the way of the discussion. So distracting.

  • marry me becca

  • I dont think she believes in the concept of marriage as its a holy union... which is good ;)

I know where your coming from though hehe

  • Too late, Rebecca got married in Vegas at TAM7

  • I hope (and am sure) that Jay Novella knows that you mock those that you like.

  • I wanna fuck the shit out of u Rebecca, u rock.

  • Religion should be treated with ridicule, not respect. Atheists believe in personal responsibility. We have no need for magic boogeymen.

  • "Mocking" -- actually organized religion has always bee a prime target for satire. Keep that sense of humor and don't let the bastards get you down.

  • Hmmmm you sound pretty miserable, depressed and nihilistic yourself there mazeley. Guess church isnt working out for you huh?

  • love the show, love your channel, love the pig tails. keep up the good work.

but the Monty Hall problem is wrong.

  • pigtails are hot.

    end of input.

  • I think you should mock the Penn Jillette way, load and with a heavy use of profanity...

    "What the F**K ...!"

  • I'd like to see a banana in the background, on the book shelf, in your next video.

They give me nightmares (I need to overcome that fear).

  • I personally think the reason we atheists "mock" believers is because having a five hour debate, a year-long e-mail ping pong, a ten page essay, etc. are all a waste of time. Rarely, if ever, will a believer de-convert as a result. It's a one way street.

Also, if "God" had to be more complex than man to create man, then "God" needs a designer even more than man. The best thing is to admit we do not have an answer yet as to the origin of the Big Bang, and (scientifically) look for it.

  • Awesome once again, Rebecca. Great to put a face to the voice I've been hearing on SGU for so long. Keep up the good work . . . and the mockery.

  • you are looking particularly lovely this month! BTW, I listen to SGU every week, love you!

  • I love my youtube atheists.

  • If Rebecca wants to have pigtails then Rebecca should wear pigtails, but if Rebecca does things that other people tell her to do, like wear pigtails, then she might as well join a cult. I love Rebecca; I listen to SGU every week, but Rebecca should be boulder. Im wearing pigtails because someone suggested it, and I HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO WEAR PIGTAILS. Would be better. Thats all I was saying when I was talking about Spiky Mohawks.

  • Maybe she was just trying it out? It would be cultish if she were doing it because she'd been told that God or Dear Leader had so ordained. But trying out a friendly suggestion from a well-wisher is not cultish.

  • it's nice the important things, like pigtails, are being disscussed:)))

Maybe we should suggest a video on flower arranging:))

  • You take things too seriously. damn. cool down.

  • Wow, you get a lot of really annoying comments. But I'm wondering if you could maybe do a video once or twice a month where you talk about your favorite story from Skepchick, or even something you haven't blogged about, that hasn't been covered on SGU.

  • Give em hell! Oh wait, you cant give em hell because you dont believe in it. Wow! I never thought of it before, but that is one serious draw back about being an atheist. But I digress. Since you are taking suggestions on hairstyle and the like, get rid of the pigtails and go with an orange and red spiky Mohawk for fierceness. Maybe a pointy black leather braw like Madonna wears and what the hell sorry, and what the heck, while youre at it, a nose ring.

  • Christians are pest? :D Hahaha, that's almost worse than hating them.

  • Your humor, sarcasm, wit, and mockery are just some of the things that keep me listening to the SGU podcast. Nice to see the face attached to the voice. BTW, love the pigtails.

  • Hey there - just letting you know that I finally figured out why I like you so much. You are a libra - I heard it in the SGU podcast. I'm a libra too! LOL.

Anyway, thanks for the heads up about TAM 7 (on SGU) - have already made arrangements to go. I'm not a great skeptic, but I just love listening to you guys. Thanks for everything.

  • (in Jay's voice) REBECCA WATSON!!

  • Rock on, Rebecca!

  • The books were a nice touch, they add a certain level authority to your video. That being said; if you were truly not "hiding" behind your smarmy attitude you'd do these posts topless... BBLLAAHHH!

  • In Soviet Russia, Oprah hates YOU!!

  • Good video, Rebecca. You definitely come across as sincere. It's a nice format for you.

  • Be yourself. That's why I subscribed.

  • I dont find you condescending at all. I think you are funny in a no bs kind a way. You rock girl!

  • From one Watson atheist to another: Well stated, Rebecca!

  • Well handled.

  • Needs more nudity and perhaps a dash of violence.

  • Definitely more nudity. Maybe naked skeptics could be a new website.

  • excellent, well balamced and thoughtful. keep up the good work.

  • Next video:

    - A beehive hairdo

    - Gold-mesh Vegas lounge singer microphone

    - Library of Congress background

  • thanks for whoever ask for pigtails

  • In future videos we would like to see cats and wine glasses.

  • Keep being you: that's why we watch.

I like a mix of "letters from believers" and arguments against the claims of pseudoscientists.

  • I watch because I love pigtails. :-D

  • but I hate baseball cards.

    lulz

  • awesome job rebecca, i do so enjoy your whacky sense of humor and your efforts informing the world with knowledge

  • what is ur favorite colour?

  • *sigh*, between Pinched's comment that you addressed in this video, and the concern trolls that have been plaguing PZ lately, there sure are a lot of weenies trying to control others.

Dear Concern Trolls: Your opinion of how other people should deliver their message, while perhaps useful to you, is still your opinion. There is room for multiple styles. The MESSAGE is what is important, and for some, tiptoeing around the feelings of those who don't respect you in return is useless.

    Go Rebecca!

  • maybe the middle of sincere and mocking is sincere mockery... SkepChicks Rock!

  • I don't know that I hate Oprah. She's really no more deluded than anyone else who buys into woo woo nonsense. It's just a fluke that she happens to have a platform from which to launch the ignorance... Sure, it's an gargantuan behemoth platform, an ICBM of woo unparalleled in the whole of human history... But I don't think she is a -fraud-.

Now, John Edward and Sylvia Browne? Those two I hate. Kevin Trudeau, Ben Stein... People who knowingly lie to get people to buy into crap. Them, I hate.

  • Great vid. The only response to idiocy is unabashed ridicule

  • That's good. You seem to be getting more and more relaxed and comfortable in front of the camera with each succeeding video.

  • What do you think about male sexuality? Is it true we are all kind of bisexual? I don't know since I don't think anyone is open about that.

Are all guys capable of enjoying other guys just like you can play solitaire by yourself but other games with others, while women are a whole different set of cards, but nobody does this for fear of social (non-)acceptance.

Are we so proud of being different animals, that we ignore what makes us healthy and happy to appear even more different to ourselves?

  • "The first human who hurled an insult instead of a stone was the founder of civilization." -- Sigmund Freud

  • I share the hate for Oprah. She has far too much power to be such an idiot.

  • yay

  • i love this new series of videos from you. I really got to love your wit and laugh from the skeptics guide. so its nice to be able to a face to the voice. the only request i have is to hear your laugh in a video. keep up the good work.

  • It is a pity Oprah doesn't use her program to teach critical thinking and free thought.

  • You rock

  • Comment removed

  • I personally hate Kevin Trudeau.

The single most compelling argument against the existence of God.

  • Kevin Trudeau may actually be the biggest douchebag of all time.

  • I'm really enjoying these videos Ms. Watson, keep up the excellent work! Oh and you forgot to mention Kevin Trudeau on your hate list :-)

  • You describe Oprah as spreading ignorance. Could you provide an example?

  • The Secret.

  • What about an example for someone who hasn't watched in a while?

  • thank you!

  • Are you kidding? Oprah has the most pseudo-science-friendly television show on the air. She's had all sorts of kooks on her show, from Rhonda Byrne to Sylvia Brown to John Edward.

    She promotes them uncritically.

  • What do you mean, "Are you kidding?" No, I'm not kidding when I say that I haven't watched her show in a while. Oprah has never been my taste, so in my entire life, I've watched maybe one or two episodes and that's it. So I'm asking for someone to please describe something she has done. Why does this kind of request warrant negative votes?

  • Because you don't necessarily need to watch to know. Just a cursory look at her typical guest list should clue you in. Oprah is probably the worst mainstream celebrity to supports pseudo-science.

Look up her interviews with Sylvia Brown, John Edward, and Jenny McCarthy. Notice how she never challenges their claims.

I'm surprised she's never had Kevin Trudeau on her program.

  • "Could you provide an example? "

Do you know who Oprah is?

  • "I even mock the ones I love" Ha! The guys on the Skeptics Guide could sure vouch for that. It's part of your charm and one of the reasons I enjoy the podcast.

  • "...These sort of things...deserve to be mocked..."

So true. Keep it up :)

  • These people need to be mocked and ridiculed for their silly beliefs or else they might think they are actual intelligent and well thought out theories.

  • You have the most random related videos i have ever seen.

  • Rebecca, if I'm ever in the Boston area, I'll have to buy you a veggie-friendly beer.

  • The audio randomly cut out on the left channel, maybe a loose connection.

  • Yeah this freaked me out. I thought my speaker died or something.

  • Poor Rebecca. -wink- For how many contingencies can she make allowance, and what will that final video look like??

As the character of Roseanne Roseannadanna use to remind, "It's always something."

  • Pigtails for Jesus, I am holy and entirely stunned! You made my day!

You really should be on public radio!

  • You should subscribe to the Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast. She's a co-host :-)

  • I can't make myself hate Oprah. She's too hot.

  • Oprah? Hot?

    ...

    Eek.

  • i wouldn't say you are 'mocking'.. i would say :

    Earnest and Playful :)

    <3

  • Yes.

This is exactly what I was thinking.

  • You rock.

    A lot.

  • Hope you keep these going Rebecca - they are very entertaining and insightful!

  • vid suggestion: oprah bashing(or some other such)

take a clip and rip it apart.

how are you in Boston and opening the window? It's not cold?

  • Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions. Ideas must be distinct before reason can act upon them; and no man ever had a distinct idea of the trinity. It is the mere Abracadabra of the mountebanks calling themselves the priests of Jesus."

-- Thomas Jefferson, letter to Francis Adrian Van der Kemp July 30, 1816

  • Now wait just a second Rebecca...are you saying Oprah is not an expert on everything?

Why not explore some of Oprahs woo woo in a video?

    Keep up the good work.

  • Mock away, Rebecca. As you say, there is a time and a place for sober, measured refutation, but there is also a place for treating pompous morons with the contempt they deserve. Don't ever change!

  • Hello!

Just stick with your style, continue being you, smart and funny :)

And if people are begging for you to mock or laugh at them, go for them! As you said, low hanging fruit *g*

    cheers

  • First.

    Love it.
