I know what musicmann008 means about the Karajan. This version is wonderful, just wonderful. Maybe they can now piece it together in a single performance.

Incredible. These kids are a shining beacon of hope in a region plagued by corruption, poverty and crime. The entire continent and the world could learn something from the passion these kids show. If we each had the kind of passion in our individual fields these kids demonstrate in their music, the world would not only be a better place, but it would be a hopeful place. A place where we can't wait to see what other beautiful, incredible things we and our fellow passionate humans create.
Some people have said that they are so good because there are 26 year olds in the orchestra, and I think, in this case, that age is rather irrelevant. One could be 15 years old and still play amazing or one could be 30 and play like crap. It all depends on skill level in my opinion.
Fabulous performance. The best of Shostakovich I've heard in recent memory. I know of no other orchestra that plays like this in the world. The depth of spirit, passion, energy, breathing, movement, precision... BRAVO!!!!
I love how they move and breath together. And notice how each entrance of a wind instrument has a totally different character and color. Very rare these days.
@bivmvideo Just like every town in the US has a baseball team, in Venezuela every town has a youth orchestra and a chorus, and it is all free thanks to the government.
There's no need to isult anyone...I think that if someone looks only generally on the behaviour of the conductor it is easy to produce such a comment that he is a joke. But when you look inside, you can see a very lively man, who really knows Shostakovich's music and knows how to conduct it. I have this symphony recorded by Haitink with LSO and SBYOV with Dudamel are not worse. They are even more lively, more energetic. I like this interpretation very much:)
The musicians are not just "tools" the are stars with or without Gustavo... the orchestra it's been recognized as the 5th in the world not for Gustavo.. but for all the members and the sistem per se.. We are proud of our young director but it doesn't mean we won't recognized the labor and how important are each one of the guys
Wonderful to see an orchestra actually "move" when it plays, especially after seeing overly controlled performances where the conductor is the "star" and the orchestra simply is a tool.
All I will say is I have listened to the version by the Berliner Philharmoniker and this one by Dudamel is the one that gives me the chills up my spine when I listen to it.
written in 1953, has been labeled as deeply autobiographic, a portrait of the author's bitterness that was predominant in his last years, as always a great conduction by this young country fellowman Gustavo Dudamel
Totally agree, there might be another interpretation I prefer, but that doesn't put me in any position to criticise world class conductors or players!
Dudamel is exceeding his reach here. The orchestra plays well, but the interpretation seems superficial, not exploring the depth and breadth of this enormously rich and complex symphony. Perhaps he Dudamel should revist 10 years from now.

A bit too slow from 4:30 to 5:55, but otherwise superb. The piece is supposed to get legs at this point and not stay as ponderous as before. But the previous section is the perfect tempo, and it is played with the right amount of venom. It is supposed to be an accusation against Stalin "You bastard, look what you've done to us!"
Tremendous rich tone out of these players, and the entire ensemble seems to be conveying a single, unified emotion. Good direction, excepting the tempo problems.
As I've said, his interpretation of the piece is not to my liking because it loses melodic focus and impact due to the slow tempo as the piece crescendos.
If you don't have a problem with different interpretations, I am confused as to why, when I offered one, you criticized it/me.
My view of this piece is more in line with Karajan's ideal.
@DannyDaWriter: I'll disagree here! If any great conductor generally for me is a turn-off for Russian music, it's not Bernstein (interesting ideas for Chaykóvskiy's 6th Symphony, though some dislikeable things too) or Karajan. Solti so far seems like the one, from what I can tell. Also, Dutoit doesn't seem so great in it either...
No way, I'd never say that of him!! In fact, while no doubt there are lots of conductors overall worse than Karajan, one composer I'll dare say was really not suited for Russian music was Sir Georg Solti.
Generally, Solti never had real success with Chaykóvskiy or Rakhmáñinov, and it seems the same applies to his work with Shostakóvich (from what I've so far seen at this time - yours truly could be wrong yet...).
@LJBSasha I agree that Solti had no business conducting the ´Russian School´. He was more suited to Offenbach and Berlioz, wasn´t he? Anyway, I don´t care for the way Simón Bolivar conducts the start of this first movement almost sans melodie. He elicits excellent dynamic control and balance, though.
@ezekieloak: You presumably don't like Gustavo Dudamel as the conductor (NOT the long-dead Simón Bolivar, after whom the orchestra is named). Well, you might wish to compare Sir Simon Rattle leading the Berlin Philharmonic in this very movement (rather similar approach). Otherwise, I didn't think of Solti for Offenbach or Berlioz - he was more for the German and Italian schools (esp. Verdi).
For the Germans, we know how Solti is adulated for his Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner, Richard Strauß and Mahler; less so for Mozart and Haydn. [Regarding Mozart, it wasn't until late in life, after his having children in his second marriage, that he apparently finally found the lighter touch necessary for the classicists.] As to the French: yes, I could see Berlioz being up his alley, though not Debussy or Ravel.
I played in the Greater Hartford Youth Orchestra as a teen. If I could have played in a group like this, wow! Amazing musicians. Dudamel is an extremely emotional conductor as well.
Shostakovich made this symphony to say the brutality of the regime of Joseph Stalin despite the request made by stalin not to make any music work against him.
