I was in my dorm room at the U. of Wyoming, watching the start of the WS game, when I heard that garbled "earthquake" from Al Michaels. Then, an episode of "Roseanne" appeared on ABC. The ran a crawl that said an earthquake occurred, so I jumped to CNN and left it there.
The fall of '89 was eventful; first that, then we were glued to CNN watching the Berlin Wall come down. And then, Panama...
Hate to say it, but the video's shock value (no pun intended) is trumping the facts just a bit. The earthquake lasted longer than 20 seconds - the most violent portion of the shaking was about that long, but the whole earthquake was just under a minute, from initial shaking to when the last bit of movement ended. A significant portion of the damage occurred in the latter half of the shaking (even in the less violent portions) because of soil liquefaction, among other things.
Wow this earthquake was very bad (my mom was still in high school 18 years old at the time, my cousin turned nine years old at the time of the 1989 San Fran earthquake :O God thats devistating)
I'm one of the 62,000. I was bringing the hot dogs and beer to my brother's season ticket seats, between home and first. I was in the walk-way between the concession stands and the double doors to the stairs, most people had been seated, I was there ALONE! 62,000 people, and there I was by myself. There was a jolt, then a slight lull, and then it built and built. I had to lean against the cement bulkhead to keep my balance, kept looking up at the columns and upper deck, it was loud, too.
Yes - arguably everything and anything (from a mouse's sneeze to a supernova) exhibits "the power of the creator". IMHO an understanding of geology, plate tectonics and all, is (A) more useful, and (2) a higher form of appreciation and praise. Just somethin' t' ponder.
JESUS shall return one day to marry his bride Israel. The birth pangs of earthquakes like a women in birth, the quakes get stronger as his return approaches.
I was only about 11 years old when this happened, and I'd never been so scared in my life. The shaking felt like it was never going to end. Hard to believe it's been twenty years already.
I lived by the bar they show. It's was called The Adam's Apple. They got tore up bad.

I could have done without the cheesy reenactments-the actual footage of the earthquake was vivid enough.
