If I remember correctly when I had an issue running a dual core system back when XP SP2 came out you have to set the game to run on a solo core instead of 2 to stop the black screen, you can do that in the ctrl + alt + del menu when you right click the exe

@Jbcartman Indeed. There's also a program to patch exe's to run on one core when launched, but i forgot the name. But i'm sure if one googles around, it can be found

yay after searching through the net i found something that finely did it

first start the game and go to options / graphics, uncheck all boxes, put shadow detail on lowest and set it to the lowest or middle resolution (if you realy got a good pc the game still looks far better then it did on most pre 2005 pc's) , then put "-32biteverything -disablegamma" behind the shortcut target thing and voila, it might crash again but only after hours :P

Those those having problems try this: DO EVERYTHING he said in this tutorial. Run the program regedit.exe (find it in the start menu by searching) Go to the folder directory HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then software, then Bullfrog productions ltd, then Dungeon Keeper II, then Configuration, then Video. Within video find Engine Id, right click it, modify with Hexadecimal clicked, and set the value to 2. If it is already 2 (mine was), then set it 4. This SHOULD now work. Glad i could help.

THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO IF YOU GET ANY ERROR FROM THE GAME:

Right click on the desktop icon, properties , compitability and check "Disable visual themes" , "Disable desktop composition" and "Run as admin". Also run the game in compitability mode Windows Xp Service pack 2.

After you have done that just start the game, go to options and uncheck the "windows accelaration" and then start a new game and VIOLA IT WORKS!

Mine doesn't work at all. Whenever I try to start the game all I see a pitch black screen. I went to go do the dishes, came back, and still was just a pitch black screen. I never even got to the start menu. I followed every guide on here too.

I got mine working, (though your tutorial isn't great for vista, still the main reason i got it working :D) for the black background error remove hardware acceleration in options and then have graphics at whatever (mine at time was high, not sure if it matters) then launch a skirmish game, quit it when the game ahs started and your menu should appear! my settings were: (compatibility)

windows 2000

check the 3 lower options and run as admin

I installed the game, and got it to run in compatibility mode for windows 2000. After i get passed the menu, and into the first game the screen is black while the Display frame for the buttons and stats are clearly visable. When i scroll through the map parts of the terrain are slightly visable. I tweaked with various settings and eventually got to show about 60% of the maps but it was still unplayable. I think its a 3D rendering problem because the black cut off seems to be constant.

im not sure if its the same for xp, but i finally got the game to work WITHOUT CRASHING AT ALL....EVER!!!!

if you goto start ->run type "regedit"

then goto....

HKEYCURRENTUSER->Software->Bul­lfrog Productions Ltd->Dungeon Keeper II ->Configuration->Video->Engine­ID=2

so i just tried randomly to goto 2 and it worked! if it already says 2 maybe try 4..

the commentary sound is a little jumpy, but the actual gameplay sound/graphics are 100% good. and no crashing! enjoy!

I can see the hand that is a mouse cursor and i can see the traps/rooms/spells you can build but everything else is just black... And then start a new game ( i don't think it matters which game u start, if its a multiplayer, skrimish or campain game. But i started a skrimish game...). That should do the trick :P

Also, despite all my efforts, my DK2 still crashes every now and then, which is pretty tiresome. I've therefore tried a few things, including a fan-based patch (called version 1.8), upgrading Qmixer (fan-based as well), turning off hardware acceleration for both sound - and graphics (as proposed in this video), reinstalled both my graphics and sound card drivers to no avail concerning the crashes (which happen at seemingly random intervals).

Any further advice would be very appreciated.

My DK2 crashes. I can run it fine, and sometmies play for ages... But whenever i click the Objectives button (that button with circle ring on it, to the left of where you get the message notifications), DK2 crashes.. I've found a solvution, if i run DK2 in 640x480 resolution, the game doesnt crash when clicking the objectives button - but i don't want to play at 640x480 =[.. Im running Win7 32x. If anyone has another solution to the crash, please let me know!

In case you had entered a directory including blanks during the installation, Windows might not have enclosed the full path in double quotes, so you may have to do that yourself and change the path in that so-called target to look like that:

"C:\Program Files\Bullfrog\Dungeon Keeper II\DKII.exe" -32biteverything etc etc

whatever your parameters are - just enclose the path in double quotes and it should work. Make sure there's a blank between the path and the parameters as well.
