I fight competition, professional training. I wear 14 gauge Plate mail and helm.
The plate, gamberson, helm, coif, spaulders, vambraces, gauntlets, full leg protection, buckler, long sword and dagger weigh around 40 kg. My 2 hander and axe is extra. Weight doesn't worry me as much as the heat. Plate mail is hotter.
the biggest disadvantage of chainmail is that is hangs from the shoulders and strains them, rather than evenly distributing the weight like plate armours
@EgholmViking butted chainmaill is crap riveted has been shown to stop cuts and most stabs as well as arrows, there are even accounts of it stopping lances while on horseback
chainmail is CRAP when stationary it is protecting against cuts and otherwise ment to "gently" make the other weapon glance of.. never do you want to rely on it to stop an actual hit.. and for the arrow.. well a chainmail to an arow is hust a bunch of holes.. however they are missing the padded vest under it wich makes it much easyer to be a warrior
I don'tknow any good article but I know some medieval manuscripts that describe the hand to hand combat. If you are going to try google I would start out searching for Ott Jud, master Ott seems to be the most important fighting master when it comes to unarmed fighing.
Try also to google "Ringen", "Kampfringen" and "Abrazare".
WOW this is very off on arms and armor. So tired? Well, well you cannot just expect any normal person to just put on body armor on and fight or march for miles… It is called working out; all men in the Military did it. Great helmet 20 lbs??? WTF I have one & it is only 4lbs!
Not the greatest controlled tests, although it is fun and somewhat informative overall. It peeves me a bit that the axe used against the mail was a wood cutting axe rather than a battleaxe, and that the sword was more 14th or 15th century in style. It would have been more useful as a demonstration if the target was padded, too.
LOL, they tally up the weight of the sword as 15 lbs... should be more like 3 lbs. Same with those mail gloves, those things probably weight a couple pounds, not 5
Only thing that looked right was the weight of the mail (which should be riveted not butted) and helmet together that came in around 20 lbs.
butted mail wasnt historicaly used..... so these test are not quite accurate cause riveted mail is stronger and again no padding under it :)...... and why is he using a late 15 century sword when mail was used till 12. century after that it was partialy exchanged by plates of armor, and already crusaders wore coat of plates to protect the chest....... btw thanks for the vids still a nice tv series.....

There's basically one completely wrong piece of information every 30 seconds, on average...

If you break your ennemy arm or ribs with your mace, it don't matter how damaged is his chainmail.
