In my opinion, this blows every other metal song I've heard out of the water. The long intrumental opening/ break, the surprisingly good anti-war lyrics, the catchy tune, the crazy good guitar solo, the attention to detail ( love those little triplets on the cymbal in the bridge,) as someone who loves all genres of music when done well, this is what I'd show a metal hater to prove heavy metal can produce masterpieces too. This bit of brilliance is what got me interested in metal to begin with.

Ironically, it is my understanding that many of Kirk's solos were written for him my Hetfield, though I stand to be corrected. Still, his execution was often bar none, of course as a female, I had several capricious thoughts going through my mind when I watched him play, often having to do with matters other than his absolute mastery of Guitar. ~OH~ Don't get me wrong! Mami Chefela taught him how to make stylin Chili too. Great when you need a change from Bologna-on-hand sandwich.

@Jtronique not exactly true,yes james wrote much of metallica's guitar work but the solos & harmonizing were written by kirk.songs like this,creeping death,fade to black,trapped under ice,or even master of puppets all use alot of his guitar work.even songs like ride the lightning & wherever i may roam had solos written by kirk,though he wasn't credited b/c it was his only contribution to them.not to mention the riff for enter sandman,which would go on to be their most famous song,is his riff.

To be honest, I have no idea why people never give the solo on Disposable Heroes any credit compared to their other hits.

This isn't my favorite song necessarily, even tho it ranks high up there for me. But this is my favorite work on the guitar; the solo is brutally fast and violent on here and PULLS THE WHOLE SONG TOGETHER. Is that not the mark of a magnificent solo?

But seriously I really wish people would stop overlooking Kirk's amazing work on this track. Easily one of his best.

@oreion69 The song was pretty heavy and cool but it was a borderline-filler song for me when comparing to the whole album. But after listening to the great solo it sort of made my approach to listening to the whole track very different afterwards. Usually solos don't really do that for me; they're more of an icing on the cake, the cake being a an already strong song on its own.

These are one of the rare exceptions where it changed my opinion of the song completely. Hence making it all better..

The biggest example is how it doesn't sound so much like as a solo but more of about 10 random licks that were just thrown together whether they work well or not. And musically, I don't hear anything mindblowing.
