but i agree, often controversies arise from flawed descriptions, contradictions are being pointed out that do not exist in the subject being described and have to be attributed to different effects of different methods of simplification.
the theory of general relativity is a drastic example. many people never reach an understanding on an intuitive level of the structure of spacetime and its effects, and then the only other way to access the theory is by using mathematics.
i think your mind can actually expand. i dont think its particularly difficult to accomplish.
the problem is that many things cannot be dumbed down to the point that somewhone who doesnt understand anything beyond middle-world can understand it. sometimes the only thing you can try to do is to either cause their minds to expand, or give them a mathematical description. for some ideas, there is no other way. certain ideas just _cannot_ be conveyed if both fails.
... and in this case, the mathematics really arent trivial. just take a look at the wikipedia article about lorentz transformations.
