Ben is buried in my Mom's hometown of Pawhuska, Ok. He was from that area (Osage County), and I'm proud to be from there too. I've never made it up to his grave, but I'd like to someday, just to say a few words. I always have admired his performances.

@42sundown...rodeo or the races, because my mom made him promise not to, or I couldn't go with him. I remember most of that trip like it was yesterday. I ate lots of good chili at Sally's cafe, got to meet Pete Justus (Ted's older brother) Uncle Nate Jones, a retired car dealer and Pawhuska legend and his adopted son Henry. I also met a kid, a year or so older than I, whom I met again at Camp Pendleton in 1961, named Corky Brumnett. So much Quarter Horse amd western History there.
@42sundown...Back to Ben and his horses, it looks like Hawkswill knows a lot about them, and I would like to know a lot more, if he were willing to give some more information. It is possible to be a really good horseman, and still look like $hit on a horse. Horse show, rodeo, and other horsemen are aware of this but most movie goers never really notice this or the quality of the horses. The Duke was usually well mounted, but I haver seen him on some too small for him to look good.
@42sundown Well, we might have been at the same Cavalcade, because my grandpa used to take me to them in the mid to late 60s! I still love Osage County, and Pawhuska is my favorite small Oklahoma town. Great buildings and some cool houses on the hillsides too. Plus, the Tallgrass Prairie to boot. Good talking to ya.
@flipwiggins..Thanks my friend for the comeback. I only had a couple of weeks there and it made me love the place. Even though I hadn't been back since 69, I never missed a chance to go through Pawhuska going to rodeos or sales. I would like to go back while my head can still wrap itself around those good memories. Nice to meet you too...see you on down the trail.
And he wouldn't have to do anymore dialogue that day Well, he lasted 15 true rodeo style bucks that time and unloaded when he chose to. EXCELLENT scene. Not a great actor, but his total performances and country boy charm were great additions to any movie. KP
One of his favorite horses from his family's movie horse stables was Steel. But when it came to racing type scenes Bingo was often the double because of his incredible speed and fantastic footing. Ben did a great deal of stunt double work for Duke early on.
Ford actually had him do a rodeo bronc scene in Wagon Master in which he was one of the leads He fell off after only four bucks, landed badly, and the stunt gaffer ran out, not in costume, to check him. Ford told him to do it again and h

Met Ben and Dobie at a Memphis Film Festival in about '82...I was not disappointed at all. Great couple of gentlemen.
