Well, I may be wrong but what I saw I believe was a film about a man who had lost his wife. I feel that at the end the two empty swings was to represent that he himself had died as well. Maybe it's just me but I was left with the impression that he took his own life.

That is just what I felt when I watched it. I don't know.

Don't think of it as committing suicide. Think of it as him going to be with his wife.

He was a kind and caring man who spent the last years of his life taking care of his wife and soothing her when she was afraid. Of course he will go to heaven :)

By the way, the young woman was definitely his wife. He saw her when he held his wife's locket (that he had given to her when they were both young).

My interpretation: Max just lost his wife so he went back to the park where he met her. He imagined her as a young woman and remembered how they met and she made him promise to come to her the next day.

The next day he got all dressed up and drowned himself in the bath, so they could be together again.

That's what I think anyway.

Now it all makes sense! That explains why in the scene when he was dressing up, first time he stood in front of the mirror there was no reflection of his wife but the second time there was. He might had a hard time with his wife's death.. So the presence of his wife's memories appeared.

i kind of saw it as, he was going to die the next day and her spirit came to lead him into his next life. He wouldnt have passed without something or someone to pass on to. So she appeared to him to let him know it was ok.

the only problem with my theory is i have no idea what the bath meant. Maybe it was just a part of his old mundain life he repeated just before he died. I dont know. You could be right to though.
