you should look into the katadyn pocket water filter. its a little bit more expensive but it is much more durable and cost effective. it does 13,000 Gallons for the life of the filter. yes, 13,000 gallons!!!
thats why i use a camel pack and it holds two litters and i used it when i went hiking 2 weeks ago and i live in florida and i gets hot and it was very good you can get it at walmart at a good price and outdoor products made it
I wouldn't drink any of the water you filtered. Not because the filter doesn't work, but because you contaminated the output repeatedly. The intake hose is contaminated and by wrapping it with the outtake hose around the filter when you were done, you contaminated any water that comes out of it. Plus by putting your wet hands around the mouth of the bottle without sanitizing them first you contaminated the bottle. You must keep the output components sterile or your defeating the purpose!
You do realize that the katadyn hiker is the same as the pur, katadyn bought pur and is now making the same filter. you put the katadyn in mud and expected it to filter, then you switched filtering places. what you should have done in dig a 6 inch hole and let the dirt flow away and then filter out of the 6inch hole to no get any mud. i was the msr sweetwater and the katadyn vario.
Try coastal beach camping and pump water from the ocean.
All you need is the Katadyn Survivor
It desalinates the ocean water, AND it filters out viruses, bacteria, fungal spores and other chemical contaminants. Pores are smaller than Sodium atoms, but large enough for water to pass. Then it also self-cleans and doesn't clog.
Check out Amazon or any other site. Simply amazing.
You're a little more trusting than I am. I'm watching these videos to gain knowledge, but I'd be worried about drinking JUST filtered water without boiling it, let alone having my kid do it.
MM87's right. You can't use this kind of filter to remove such a massive amount of sediment. You should let that settle out, then filter from the clear part of the water. Also, a simple filter made from a t-shirt will get all the big stuff out. A coffee filter works well before subjecting your expensive filter to such abuse.
@Ihatetoprocrastinate you can use an osmosis filter, or evaporate it, but urine isn't always sterile, thats a myth, especially if someone has a UTI or haematuria or yeast infection.
Yes while this is true, the filter, any filter for that matter, will not be able to remove the salt from your urine. it is reccomended that you only filter your urine for drinking at a maximum of 4 times, before salt levels become life threatening.
Try bringing some cheesecloth out with you. It is very cheap and lightweight. Fold the cheese cloth over to make 4 or 8 layers, depending how fine you want to prefilter the water, run the water through the cheesecloth filter first to remove particals then use the Katadyn filter on the cheesecloth prefiltered water. You can easly dry the cheesecloth on your backpack as you hike..shake it out and use it again. Keeps the filter clean.
Should always use lead pipes on drinking water systems and the older the better, you should also add 1 litre of zinc oxide solution per 10 litres of drinking water. I have been doing it this way for about 8 hours now and mygod do i feel ill i have been sick 4 times and have lost 9Kg in weight any ideas why?
Bringing the water to the point where it just starts to boil is enough. If you carry an accurate thermometer (instant read chef's thermometer from a restaurant supply store) you don't even need to bring to boil, just go to 150 deg F. and let it cool slowly. Google "Water Pasteurization" for more info.
According to research conducted by NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), they now say you only need to heat water to the point where you see "fish eyes" (bubbles on the bottom of your pot. However, I personally always bring to a boil - once it begins to boil, you're good to go.
I was under the impression that Iodine had no taste... that is one of the dangers with Iodine poisoning is that you can not taste or calculate the consumption of Iodine...That is a Question.
I use my Katadyn Hiker Pro all the time...heaven help you if you don't use the pre-filter..you'll clog it quick. Maintain it and use it as directed and you'll be ok. I entrust my life to it a few times a year.
Just took my Katadyn hiker out in to the woods for the first time. Tried it in 2 different streams but both times water tasted stale and woody and the water was reddish in one stream and yellowish brown. These stream were in a wooded swamp area, New England swamp, not Florida swamp... Is this normal? How can you tell anyway if the water is really safe to drink, short of waiting to get sick or not?
Best advice, use a coffee filter around the prefilter. For the water bottle the have a small harness that cost about $1-2 dollars that goes around the spout. Problem solved.
I have heard good things about both. Visit the website and post your question in the hiking and camping section. I am sure you will get lots of feed back.
I have used both katadyn and MSR filters. Broke 2 Katadyn filter handles. Katadyn pump faster but you can't clean filter once it is dirty. MSR Water works are more durable and you can clean the cermatic filter. Just a tip for any filter: Put coffee filters around the inlet hose to filter out even more dirt before it gets to the main filter. It will make your filter last longer between cleanings.
What's up with the Katadyn? As expensive as they are, you'd think the things would be more rugged and reliable than that. Pretty simple operation, so we know that wasn't the problem. It was only used once or twice before that. I almost bought one recently. Guess now I'll think twice before I decide to buy it.
Why most video that i see ever one gets there hands wet then they open bottle up and drink the water. I think after playing in dirty water should was hands before you touch anything.Or did we all forget what our mother's told use
The MSR Ceramic .02 microns, lazer holes in it pumps 32 oz in 1 min. Filter lasts 100gals. approx. Comes with gauge for replacement time. I'f anyone can tell me a better filter, let me know.
Sawyer inline filter? It lasts... well, I did the math a while back. Basically, if you filter three liters everyday and drink it, it should last you six months.
with the msr waterworks and msr waterworks ex.. you can add a part to the bottom that can add chemicals to the water to treat the water fully. because .02 microns will get everything but virses like hepatites a.. and a few others..
The 32oz Nalgene bottle screws on it. I carry 2. Thats a good thing about the MSR. Clean with scotch brite pad when hard to pump. Hope yoy agree fraud66.
Please Post a Video or a Follow up on what went wrong with the Katadyn Water Filter. Eather that or Let people know if Its not worth it to buy. (So far I would say I wouldnt buy it)

@murleman urine is sterile so you could drink it straight, the issue is with salt concentration and filters wouldn't help with that.
