Why do people have to over-complicate this? He is a great songwriter. There's nothing else to say. Who cares about anything else? He writes great songs.
@NintendoSegaSonyGuy I'm actually not sure. I was quite little when that show was on so I don't remember the individual episodes very well. I just know it was on a CD my cousin had of the soundtrack. It doesn't specify the episode on imdb either.
It's just funny, because reruns of the show have been being shown on the SunDance channel. My sister and I have been watching them recently. From the numerous episodes we've seen so far, I can't recall ever hearing this song.
If you've never watched the show, I highly recommend that you do sometime.
@NintendoSegaSonyGuy I remember the characters quite well (esp. Jordan Catalano!), but I think most of the themes/plots probably went right over my head - I'd like to see it again as an adult just for all the nineties nostalgia!
@NintendoSegaSonyGuy My point is that nothing is perfect, and his music is not perfect by CONVENTIONAL standards. Which makes it, in its own context, perfect because he is not concerned with being conventional anyway. You are all misunderstanding my point, which actually originally was in response to someone ELSE claiming an imperfection. I don't know why refering to something as not being perfect is considered a negative thing - it's a compliment.
Typically, saying something is not perfect when someone really likes it is regarded as a negative thing. But now I see your point. Nothing is really perfect. By claiming something has a character flaw, it makes it seem complete. Some people just happen to take that the wrong way.
@NintendoSegaSonyGuy I totally agree. In conventional contexts, imperfection seems like a negative thing, but when someone or something is completely individual, the perfection is in the imperfection, if that makes sense.
This song is great. I think a lot of people can't grasp his music because they don't know the back story of his life. I tell everyone to watch "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" and THEN listen to the music. I promise, you'll love it and it's sweet, simple, complexity.
@YunaBonbeurre The imperfection is what makes it perfect to me. His singing is far from conventionally 'good' or attractive but that is what makes it more relateable and beautiful.
@Polyfusia I was thinking the same thing. The song flows well, and "come see me tonight" is a great concept to work on, but the lyrics sound like they were rushed.
It's a shame that most of his songs are like this.
@kkknoxskorner "It's a shame that most of his songs are like this."
If that's consistently the case, though, is it not possible that that's simply his style? That the very fact that some of his lyrics seem rushed is a representation of the way his hectic individual thought processes work? Perhaps, to him, it seems more honest not to edit them into lyrics that appear less rushed in the finished product? Just a thought, I'm not disagreeing with you completely :)
@mepsib Yeah, I noticed the style of his work is really dependent on his situation. He seems more coherent and better (to my biased pop music tastes, keep in mind) when he's comfortable and supported, like when he was a highschool kid or living with his brother. When he isn't so comfortable, his music, like you said, seems hectic and rushed. I really do appreciate that, and I think that's what makes Danny amazing. I'm just a little picky at times when it comes to lyrics, no matter the artist.
@giorgioarmanizavos Yeah, it was originally on Hi, How Are You (1983, I think - early 80s anyway). I got it from the Please Don't Feed The Ego best of.
@Ddiggah Ah, so it is - I have that album burned on a blank disc with some other songs including Come See Me Tonight so mistakenly thought the song was part of that album
Like many of Johnston's songs, this is brilliant song-writing from the lyrics to the music. And like usual, the performance is not ideal. I hope Johnston will let more people cover more of his fantastic songs, because while he does sing well at times, his vocal talent can't do justice to all of his songs.
Personally, it's his non-perfect performance that makes me like the song in the first place. I would hate this song if it didn't have his strange vocals. His voice seem to fit the lyrics more than a better trained one, in my opinion.
It was a local University (Indie type station) I called my spot "The Soundtrack Cafe". After the first time I played this song I got requests every week for this and Casper from the Kids soundtrack. It was so much fun doing it I really miss it. I also would throw in some Smurf tunes for fun :)
Keep me posted on the radio spot if you can. Good luck with the essays :) Get the rules on what you can play too...I couldn't play mainstream songs that one would normally hear on mainstream stations but that is what made it fun. :)
Yeah might see whether they have room for an extra student next semester at my college radio station, and thanks for wishing me luck with the dreaded essays, i'll need it!
I have heard this song many times before but it still always brings out strong emotions in me. Somehow this song taps into loneliness really well.

I'm going with YunaBonbeurre. This song is perfect, without an "imperfection" that mepsib is claiming. It's just blowing me away.

If art is a reflection of the artist, it should be imperfect.

@BigBruinekool Music is art, and art immitates life. So if your life isn`t perfect why should your music be?
