Bill's talent doesn't lie in Portnoy-sized sets with hitting things really fast. It lies in taking a very simple tune and playing with it, not over it, to change it. Listen to how many ways he interprets and expresses that simple riff in less than a minute.
If I watch BB vid I want to see what people think of him. When I see for 1000 times like kids like you mention about thier best drummers Im really sad. Go comment Mike Portnoy, neil peart and steve gadd if u want. But what these guys have to the Bill? I dont have to be the person who posted this vid to write comments. At least mine are not pointless.
Before I did any research on bill's theories, all I knew was that he played a wrap around set of sample pads with some gacked out earthy sounds. He does stick out as one of the best jazz drummers, and has played with some mainstream commercialized acts. Keep in mind this place is for opinions, not retaliation when someone doesn't share the same narrow minded opinions as you.
Did you actually post and entire paragraph on how you work in the music industry? Your last 2 posts still dont change that fact you compared apples and oranges, then proceeded to say jazz drumming...falls short of metal drumming? Dont get me wrong, im a HUGE metal fan, but comparing Bruford to Bittner/Jordison seems a bit misplaced on this page.
Since we are all here for opinions, thought I'd state mine. I went to school for music, and produce audio/video scores. I play drums and anything with strings on it very well. I also work in the music industry, what do you do? In my experience as a drummer, I have played for bands from blues to progressive math metal. flash has nothing to do with it. It's about serving the music, don't overplay your part as the spine of the peice you are playing.

lol... i'd like to see this guy do that again.... stroke for stroke. It's really pretty easy to combine time sig's like that that sounds like a clusterfook. Joey Jordison and Jason bittner would share this guy for lunch. Don't understand why so many drummers worship jazz acts. I like jazz for the guitars/horns/rythmes... but these guys clearly are not the best drummers around. metal drummers are more percussive thinkers
Mymmavideos, please dont post on topics you know nothing about. I'm not the kind that likes to tear down, but obviously drums and "percussive thinking" are fields you have yet to explore. Come back when your favor for the speed of metal drumming and flashy styles has left. Then, mabe we can talk progressive music and fathers of modern drumming.
Regardless of your "years in the industry" you clearly have not got a grip on what "improvisation" means. The idea is NOT to 'do it again stroke for stroke'. Please remember, music is a LANGUAGE. When you're having a conversation with a friend, do you pull out your 10 most 'well-rehearsed' responses? Of course not. You react to the mood/content of the dialogue. This is what a great jazz improviser does. Jason Bittner and Joey Jordison are damned PARROTS. Repeat, repeat, repeat. wow.....
@JazzzRockFuzion I totally agree - I'd like to see Joey pull this off and I'll tell you right now, if Bill WANTED to play like JOEY, he could quite easily, I'm sure.
Bill has played drums longer than Joey has been alive LOL
@JazzzRockFuzion I saw him with King Crimson in Toronto - Pat M. on the other kit , Tony Levin on Bass - Trey Gunn - Frip and Belew - nearly crapped my pants. Actually, I think I did ! Absoluletly incredible players :) all of them . Pat Mastelletto is under rated as well. Played with Mister Mister and he's quite good indeed :)
He he.... I wish I had the permission to go on stage and do that. You're right maybe I should have asked bill to move it for me.or next time you should have come and done it yourself asshole
The piano became a little annoying there towards the end, but I can listen to Bruford anytime. Think about it. How many drummers can you recognize when you hear them? A true sign of greatness
there is no doubt about that. his work is on a level that few can appreciate. its great to see other people respect and appreciate such a wonderful musician like bruford. world class drummer/musician!

@myusskyuss The "good Yes"? Implying Alan White is any less skilled? You fail.
