What a sad, sorry old man. The reason he was so depressed was because he did not believe in GOD. UNfortunately dementia took its toll, and he spoke utter nonsense as evidenced in this interview. He cared about people but rejected Jesus Christ as his saviour.
You obviously need to read his works to understand that he was depressed not because he didn't believe in God but because he lost faith in humanity because of all the problems perpetuated by corruption, including corrupted religious institutions. I don't pity Russell for his disbelief, I think his rejection of Christ as Savior just proves that he refuses to think that humanity is inherently evil; So no, I think he rejected Christ specifically because he cared about people without delusion.
I don't know what sort of medical knowledge you posses but i don't think that "doesn't believe in God" is a suitable criteria for saying that someone has dementia.
Indeed deciding that you are capable of living your own life instead of morally resting on the ideals of a bronze age text repleat with barbarism, rape and genocide, shows an independance, clarity and saneness of thought that dementia usually doesn't allow.
@MrGeorgios2020 It's funny how they say hindsight is 20/20 because I think that's all you got. You not only missed the point of Russell's work, you missed the point of Jesus' message. Keep rejecting people and caring about the saviour, that's the christian extremist's way. He'll turn up soon I'm sure. 2020 maybe.
Currenlty Im doing a phil paper on the debate between copleston and Russell. Yestarday I picked up his basic writings to explain his belief system when he says he's an agnostic. I ended up spending most of the night reading 400 pages of his writings and hating myself for not taking the time to discover him before.
Funny that the world is going down the toilet, many people say philosophy is useless, i think on the contrary, its forgetting the work of thinkers like him and the general mental laziness that is dooming the world.
I could not possibly agree with your comment more. Mental apathy is destroying our cultures and sense of individuality.
John Zerzan points to the technological dictatorship coming our way, through isolationism and false collectivism. Mikhail Bakunin once said we'd go backward as a species.
As one who shares thoses three passions, I can tell you that the third one, the care for the suffering of others, is the hardest to bear. I don't know if it is a blessing or curse, sometimes. Yet I wouldn't want to change that part of me if I could. I can't imagine divorcing myself of feelings for others. It is part of who I am and I recognized it when I was about 9 years old. In the ensuing years, it has never left me, and I hope it makes me a better man.
I'm downloading a pdf file package of over 612mb of information.
I plan n reading it ALL. ALL OF IT. It's going to take me a LONG time, but believe me, I'll do it, and when I have I think I'll understand this world a LOT more.
I have all of Berts books.
Pretty much every book on political anarchy and none compliance there is. I'll hit you back in about a year and tell you all I have learned. I'll try help you too.... ^_^
Count me in - I will wait axniously - and I too have decided this needs much consideration.
I can not believe I have managed to make it 42 years on this planet and had never been exposed to this magnate. I am in awe, as I have traveled and study much and found the same passions and understanding having never touched the work.
Thank Ayn Rand for at least pointing me in the correct direction. Much study in my future.
I look forward to what you find and care to share.
I will indeed. Please, allow me a day. I am on a work computer right now, rest assured, I will get you your information.
Try bit torrent, it's called. Anti-authoritarian, political books. It's a collaboration of PDF's, Bertrand, Chomsky, Achcar, Emma Goldman.... If you don't find it, I'll be back in a day ^_^
To start there is, Emma Goldman, Mikhail Bacunin, George Orwell, John Pilger, Gilbert Achcar, Noam Chomsky (though he's a little post modern)... Peter Kroptkin, Rothband Murray.
These are a few authors I'd highly recommend.
As you read them though, it becomes exclusively clear (if it wasn't already) that the state is only there to conserve its' own power and influence. Riveting reads though. Especially Emma Goldman.
one of the best luckies of my life is reading what he has written.

Bertrand Russel. His entire philosophy of life is centered around sex and love. I like his essays and other publications.

Does anyone else think that Bertrand Russell could have been the model for Darth Sidious' speaking style?
(That's the Emperor in Return of the Jedi).
They sound eerily similar, especially when saying words like "wicked", "evil" and his penchant for the phrase "a great many xxxx".
