Travel does rock. Been to China, loved it especially going to the city of Xiamen to see the home of my great-grandfather. Truly a great summer. Many people are too scared to go overseas because of language barriers or food. Forget that.........just go and jump into the culture. No tour guides......Cheers! (But I have to admit, I agree with you. 5-star hotels in Asia really are the best!)

Don't listen to this pair of old hacks. You don't need a 'guide' or a 'tour' to travel China. Unless you're a complete wet blanket. Especially in Shanghai, the most Westernized city in China. A good guide book and some a few basic phrases and you can cope just fine.
