after a series of falls comes a glorious series of victories for Shizuka! World Championships 2004 and of course the Torino 2006 Olympics (cherrie on the top before she retired)! Shinchan xoxo :)
Wow, no offense to Shizuka, I really did come to like her as she improved more and more (obviously after this was taped), but if she were currently competing, and her skating was this quality, the other women skaters in Japan would cream her. She would not even be in the world championships! She's not the only one either. It's hard to believe how high the bar has been raised in skating just in the past few years!
Oh, what I meant was, like they've done w/ so many skaters in the past (albeit not recently so much), the referee making the official call to have the skater reskate the entire segment of the program missed due to the ice conditions (rather than Shizuka personally deciding to "repeat" an element).
The 4.2 seems certainly is unpleasant to me but Shizuka did make some mistakes, and by that I mean more than just edge problems with her 3F. Shaky 2nd spiral position, a bit of a traveling on her layback spin, and the fall on her camel spin. 4.2 is quite harsh but it wasn't the best of what Arakawa could do in her fullest potential. Still she's definitely a great skater (I adore her fluid skating skills)
Sure, I agree that Arakawa's talent ONLY flourished once she joined the Tarasova team the season later--so she was still rough around the edges. For that, I won't expect top marks for this SP.
At the same time, they weren't penalizing skaters for "lips" back then.
On the camel, the replay clearly shows that she got stuck in a rut when she fell. The ISU rules, if I understand correctly, may allow a skater to reskate the element when that happens???
I think the costume is great--it's unique and eve-catching in a non-offensive way. Arakawa commented later, though, that it was hard to move around in this costume because some parts were covered wth non-stretching leather.
Both falls scared me too, but in the case of Arakawa, it wasn't really her fault as her blade got stuck in an edge mark. As I know, Asada made a technical error, it was not a problem from the ice. That's why they are a little different to me.
An awkward and uncomfortable costume. Those marks were wildly divergent. Some judges probably counted the fall as a totally missing element. Also, she was not as prominent in 2003 as she would be later and judges often heavily penalized mistakes by less famous skaters. This was explained to me by a former international judge. Judging was so corrupt and bad before the current system although the current system does tend to homogenize the programmes.
I agree that Shizuka wasn't fully appreciated as a skater until 2004, and the old system had a lot to do with it. However, it is also true that she did develop rather rapidly under the Russion guidance beginning in 2004...
I also agree with you that the new system will never allow us to see another Janet Lynn or Yuka Sato, because it rewards cluttered programs and penalizes well-executed yet "simpler"/purer ones...
I hate that...everyone should be treated equally, and NO corruption!!!
Hopefully there can be a balance between artistry and technical elements like the old system, but uncorrupted. One that doesn't force skaters to be robots, or make their strong points useless (like Nathalie Krieg, who never got enough recognition for her jumps...from the judges, that is!), you know?
omg look at this results 4.2 omg and year later she got 6.0 wow and i can't believe that she was only 8 sarah hughes was 6 because the championships was in us but in the way that sarah skated i think shizuka was better than her i have a question sarah won the olympics games and what she did after that was only 6 at the worlds and year later she retired and big names like slutskaya kwan was on the 2 and 3rd it was very strange
This program is quite good. She has improved since then. Her jumps are always exquisite. The way she jumps is like WOW! She has nice spins too. I am happy she broke out and wonn in 2004. The Japanese federation was not very supportive of her unitl then. She skated quite well here. Her LP in 2003...I would've put her a head of Sokolova and Suguri and Cohen as well. The SP really dropped her. Shizuka Arakawa = 2006 Olympic Champion!
So she did a re-run for the 2003-2004 season, this progrm beat Michelle's exquisit "felling begins" at 2004 worlds?? gosh! what were the judges thinking? anyway this program here was really good and the choreography very original! but the combination at the beging was weird!
Arakawa made this program MUCH better in 2004. Her combination jump was stronger, her Spiral Sequence was stronger, her footwork was better, and (of course) she didn't fall on the entrance to her last spin. LOL.
The ice-resurfacing has changed after this. Arakawa's edge got stuck in someone else's jump landing edge mark. Yeah, this modern swan program gets better in 2004
shes almost wearing a thong here ; ) no wonder her spirals looked very cautious and reserved.

Be careful when skating to Swan Lake. Keep in mind that the swan always die at the end...

I actually like the costume. I think it's kind of dramatic. And I just noticed that she had a gold blade and the other one silver.
I love her layback spin! And too bad for the fall. But what were the judges thinking when they gave her 4.2?!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Maybe her low scores were also because of her costume! Haha. Ugh.

yeah...the double toe on her combination was a bad toe axel
fun program though

Her toe looks exactly like every other toe that I've seen she do and they were never referred to as toe-axels. What makes it one?
