alright this will be expsive....i thaught i had a lot of money with 300 dollars and i dont think that will carry me all the way through the salt water aquarium......what should i do?
@WELLMARKsm Freshwater. I started and fully stocked a 20 gallon freshwater aquarium and have only spent about $200 on everything; fish, supplies, etc.
@WELLMARKsm freshwater tank then, I was in the same place you are, I had $300, wanted a salt water, but realized i didn't have enough so I bought a freshwater tank, I got a 55 gallon kit for about 100 then my decoration, sand, and live plants for about another 150, then I had plenty of money left over for fish, 50 for freshwater fish goes way farther than 50 for saltwater fish. Some saltwater fish go for up to 100 sometimes...
@newmabreu96 ugh calm down....its not that serious...the ocean still has plenty of fish...and he's not harming the fish...he's providing a safe environment for them..
Looking at your recent activity on you're' channel I see your going to every video about salt water aquariums you can find and copying this comment... Get a life is this all you have to entertain yourself? Sad.
@newmabreu96 Actually, by providing a safe habitat for these fish and other aquatic life, he is insuring their survivel, increasing there likely hood to mate, and preventing them from being eaten by predators. so If you are going to go tell someone to go burn in hell, it should be you for being so closed minded.
Most Specific saltwater dealers don't know what they are talking about either. They just want to get their product sold. I can tell you some Horror stories of some SO CALLED advice these sales idiots have given me. NOT to mention hundreds of dollars lost. If only i could have just 1)research online. 2)gone through a couple of videos of "Average Joe" people who have tried and proved the best way. And 3) started out small then worked my way up, i could have saved myself a huge Head Ache.
i agree with crackhugger if you cant find a salt water specific store a small bussneiss pet store is the next best thing as long as they sell saltwater fish
Where I live in Hawaii millions of fish are taken each year. I snorkel daily and have seen the practice, they break all kinds of coral. It hasn't died down, aquaculture only breeds a couple kinds of fish, look at their websites closely, most fish say tank raised, not tank bred. Tank raised are taken from the wild still. It is so bad in Hawaii that some fish are nearly extinct.
@Aviator1510 In some place it is and as it spreads to other areas it is causing destruction. Check out the pacific lionfish devastation that is going on in florida and the bahamas. These fish were first released from aquariums, they don't belong in the atlantic, the predators don't know to eat them and they are eating the smaller fish at an alarming rate. They say it could be the biggest crisiis for reefs there. Plenty of video on the subject here on youtube.
Have you heard about algae choking out coral? Yellow tangs (along with many other fish) are herbivores who graze on algae dawn to dusk. Algae suffocation is a primary threat to Hawaii reefs. Millions of yellow tangs ship out annually. Google "The Dark Hobby; Can We Stop the Devastating Impact of Home Aquaria on Reefs Worldwide? " There are many reasons why coral reefs are threatened. Let's end the aquarium trade and there will be one less threat to the reefs.
Not cool. Coral reefs are being decimated by fish collectors for aquariums. In Hawaii many of these fish cannot be found as so many have been taken off the reef that they are nearly gone. Fish in the ocean live many years longer than fish in tanks. Aquariums are cruel and mean destruction of the ocean environment. View the video "Hawaii Audubon Society" to learn more!
Have you heard about fragging? Global warming is destroying reefs at an alarming rate by increasing water temperature and causing the corals to release their chlorophyll, turning them white and eventually killing them. What fragging is is taking a small piece from a coral in the ocean, and growing it into a full coral at home. Fragging is one way that we can be sure to always have corals because we can always return the coral to the ocean. This is a very positive part of aquariums.
@konafishlover Have you ever heard of aquaculture? It's where they breed fish in captivity instead of taking them from the wild, and it also mentioned it in the video your talking about. That video was also put up close to 3 years ago, no doubt aquaculture has caught on and the situation has died down. It also is more healthy for fish and guarantees they will live longer and carry less disease. Why would someone rather have a fish from the wild?
Hey great videos, i really appreciate the help, I'm starting up my own 125g reef tank, and I had a quick question about filtration in one. Is a protein skimmer all I need in terms of a filter (ignoring bacteria in the sand/rock/etc...) or do I need to get a filter as well as a protein skimmer?
In a marine tank you shouldn't use a biological philter. Because in this way you'll grow too much nitrifying bacteria. The tank will became quickly full of ammonia. That is toxic for corals. You must use instead an efficient skimmer and a lot of live rocks (1 kg for 5 liters of water). Finally you must change 10% of tank water weekly.

the only secret from preventing nemo and dory to float dead ,,,,that pet shop and under money sucking companies don't tell you...... is to regularly do water change that is it,,,,,you don't have to buy those expensive filters skimmers,,bio balls fancy light and shit,,,i have a tank it runs with ordinary light,,ordinary air pump no dead fish for almost 2 years just do weekly water change half tank
need help! the collector located above on my jebo protein skimmer fills up with water very quickly, i mean less than 6 hours and its filled with water already, how do i adjust this?
i was thinking of changing my tropical tank into a marine one but after watching this i dont think im guna bother lol its abit to complicated i think lol
@LyOnS409 lol yeah i have a 30g reef tank i have a mechanical filter, no skimmer, no bio balls, i have all soft corals, 3 fish, and 30pnds of live rock, everything is running good lol
I was researching how to keep the water clean and I am finding instead of using light blue light filtration you can also use silver. Yep REAL silver. I am testing my tank to see how it will go without the light filtraction.
how would is set up a full on filter including, protein skimmer, UV, extrenal sump and wavemaker etc any any other ozone bits n bobs, im still learning and i have a huge freshwater tank that i want to make into a reef tank housing coral etc. any help would be great
Yes you can use a Protein skimmer and a fluval filter. Although it really depends on the size of your aquarium and how many animals you want it there.
it looks like the oceanic bio cube 14 gal its a great tank and has filter sand it basically come with everything its about $350 nice tank i recomend it!!
Well what can you say about a guy doing tutorials in front of a tank with dead bleached coral skeletons?
I guess something like "don't do it this way".
