man i love gym jones, i love crossfit... but neither groups invented intensity or resistance training. get in where you fit in and quit arguing about it
Take a look at the guy at 3:40 of this video and compare him to the others. It's really simple, just retitle the video "Kipping Pull Ups"?!
Also, post a video with "real" pull ups completed at a different tempo such as "down slow and up fast" to compare the difference in reps with the kipping ones. I'd also be interested in seeing what these guys can pull for a 1RM. Or maybe how many reps they can do at bodyweight + 100 lbs.
impressive strength, but really not very good kipping example. he's not getting a full ROM on any of those reps. his elbows are still bent on every rep and he's not nearly explosive enough or using his hips enough to give a good example of a kip. still impressive strength though...don't think i could do that many.
I see nothing but bad form. (craning of neck etc) Exercises such as this that need the use of momentum are better off for cardio, endurance and/or conditioning. they fatigue the muscle which makes it incredibly hard for muscular development over the long term. Overload the muscle dont fatigue it. for those who disagree prove me wrong with some science based proof. Dont get me wrong i like these exercises (provided they performed with great form) but people have the wrong idea about what they do.
Sup fellas! Im 220lbs, can bench 250, and can do 30 or so rev. rows(which Im told is a good alternate for a pull up,) but Im lucky if I can do 2 pull ups. Any advice?
i know this is 3 months later but if you have access to something that allows you to do pull ups at home the best way is to do them throughout the day (3-5x is recommended). if you can only do 2 pull ups then there are a couple things you can do when you pass under that pull up bar. either perform 5 jumping pull ups or 3-5 singles. very brief but very effective. test your numbers every month. once you can do 5 pull ups start doing 3 normal pull ups at a time. increase a rep every week
to those of you who are ignorant and/or irreverent toward the kipping pull-up- you really need to start reading things outside muscle and fitness magazine. the consumerist crap that comes out, telling people they need to put on leather gloves and isolate their lats on the pull-up bar in order to achieve a wider back is there for just that purpose. a wider back. it will help you build muscle mass but offers nothing in the way of hip power and nothing in the way of coordination.
Mark Twight was the person who was responsible to train the crew for 300. His methods of training weren't all that perfect but it was aimed at causing muscle confusion. So that type of pull-up you see here may not be familiar to you guys because this type is aimed at working the back and abdominal. And to prove this watch the 300 training video...
@hipoxantha mark twight ripped off crossfit after he left their community. everything he teaches he learned from them. after he stole their material, he published it under his name and sold it to the military.
for everyone here u go strict pullups is when your going for strength and kipping is for more conditioning.
as for pull ups are when the back of ur hand is facing u when grippin the bar thus using more back and chin ups are when u twist ur wrist grab the bar and have the palm of ur hands facing u thus using back and more arm all are excellent but it depends on what your goal(s)
i don`t care wat anyone says about these being more synergistic or any of that other bullshit-THESE ARE NOT NOT NOT CHIN UPS. hard they may be but chin ups they`re not.
these are a great exercise, but dont go telling people you can do that many chins because if they were proper chin ups they would only be able to do half what there dooing here. in fact i could do a million of these !!!
These guys are professionals and all of you who think you know what you are talking about by saying they're not pull ups just like listening to yourselves talk. Kipping is not cheating, and as accesstogreat1 said, it is a movement workout. "Muscle isolation" doesn't do shit for your body. These guys know much more about what they're doing than people who spend all day on youtube trying to sound cool by bashing videos.
ok guys can't talk shit unless you know the Gym Jones motto is pretty much FUNCTIONAL STRENGTH...in real life if your stuck on the edge of a damn mountain and you need to kip to get your body over thats what your going to do, that's what Gym Jones is about....look at any of the info on their website its very easy to see if you actually care to look
The purpose behind the kip them is that as in life, you will never isolate a single muscle group to perform any task, you will use your entire body. With that said, the kipping pull up is a more functional pull up in that it incorporates a total body movement, vice shoulders and arms.
Hence: "Your body is one piece, treat it that way."
It is a different exercise entirely from the strict pullup. Apples and oranges.
That is true and I like to do kipping pull ups myself (depending on my objective for a particular workout), however, doing a pull up WITHOUT the kipping motion does NOT isolate any muscle either... it is still a compound movement, not an isolation movement. no matter what kind of pull up you do, it is still a GREAT exercise for functional upper body strength, period. it's never been an isolation type exercise. pull ups rule!
"was a bit sick of seeing Pull-ups finished with the chin grazing the underside of the bar so we filmed a few people in the gym pulling their whole head over the bar. All of them (except John) use some sort of kip to generate momentum, which is considered "cheating," usually by folks who have trouble doing Pull-ups... "
This is supposed to illustrate some sort of ideal pullup. As others have mentioned, this is junk. Show me 65 real pullups and I'll be impressed. That would be a feat.
Twight's gym credentials are suspect to say the least.
what.. the feck, is that guy in the white top doing, the 3rd guy... he is barely using his arms for christ sake, swinging hiself up more like. u should remain the whole body fairly still and use your arms for the whole thing
It's called kipping dude, not jolting. Dead hang is a rest position. You can see in this video that there are some of the Gym Jones guys kipping and a couple who are not. All are acheiving full range of motion... and then some. These guys are all about quality, something that most people (including me) fail to deliver. Listen to what Mark Twight says at the end...
I love it!!! People think you have to big muscles to be strong!! They are wrong. This guy could run laps around body builders!! He's strong, fit, and lean. What else do you want? This is what everyone should aspire too.
these ara not full of arm power.sorry.

Kipping or no kipping I don't give a shit, EXCELLENT work and effort shown here.

Cheating is defined as some variant of a form that offloads intensity from the target muscle.
Kipping IS cheating.
That doesn't mean it's BAD, it depends on what you want to achieve.

At gym jones, they dont care how much pain or bad habbits they endure. Aslong as they see results.

@FriggnDiggn Check out the Armstrong pull-up method. Also, weight assisted pull-up machine can be really helpful. You could also try kipping.
