@SnoopyInTheBox Just watched 6 videos of Kiko, very good. He has his own progressive rock thing, some neo classical and a little Brazilian flavor added, very nice. But, Guthrie has a couple of things that set him apart. First, jazz and blues lines, and so many ideas in his solos that are improvised 'through' key changes. Second, versatility. Fusion, rock, blues, some jazz, and country chops from 'outer space'. A rare, new breed of player. More compelling. He keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I've been playing guitar for over ten years, I've studied songs by Satriani, Phil Keaggy, Eric Johnson, etc. I'm in college majoring in music (specifically in guitar) and I can't even play the opening riff of this. I mean, I can hit the notes of it, but he just makes it sound so... awesome. There's really no other word. Well played, sir. I'll try again in a year or two. :P

I've watched every single video of Govan, including interviews and gear tours and every time I see this man playing or speaking, it's like God appealing to me. It's a new experience every single time. He knows how to speak, how to transmit knowledge, how to make people laugh and definitely how to play. I hope that Guthrie will release a book, someday. :)

The guitar is more suited to riffs and phrases,augmented/bridged by fills,because it fundementally lacks natural sustain,like you get from a bow on stringed instruments,thats why it works so well with from amplified sustain,the modern bow,it opened up a whole new world of music for the guitar,imo

@enos218 Preamp gain really does improve the instrument, both sustain and dynamics, especially with certain EQ and tone settings. Sustain is one thing, but when a player uses different amounts of pressure with hammers and pull offs or picking then the timbre will vary almost as if the EQ is changing slightly. Guitar is also one of the few instruments that is in every style of music.
