@ImaniHekima good observation as hedrix's later american recording were pulling on this type of groove. he got famous playing whith and for whites guys in UK, so when he began recording back in the US he started checking many guys playing this stuff. so many of these bands were influencing HIM. i always found jimi's tyle much more funk than traditional;ly what we call rock. most people only hear much of his stuff as rock due to the way its constantly talked about in music press.

@gnowave "so many of these bands were influencing HIM" - I liked that, thanks. I must say, when I was growing up, I always thought Jimi's music was soul. The first song I heard was Purple Haze back in 1973 (I was 7). It was the rhythm of the track and his singing.

@ImaniHekima ABSOLUTLY. when he moved back to the states he got in touch with many of the very excting new balck power moevent bands. if you think about it (whatever the talent level is) most power funk (that is funk from the black power movement) is james brown and henrdix influenced, with aspects of little richard.

jimi's music always contained much of what would eventullay be known as soul-funk, but he was heavily influenced by the early black power movement, and worked with buddy miles.
