I've read that due to the Censorship guidelines at the time they could only hint at the love between them
There was even a scene where Jim and Plato kissed in the original script but of course the censors balked and said it absolutely could not be in the film
I mean Plato even has a picture of I believe Vic Damone hanging in his locker not a girl
also Buzz's gang said to Plato about how we got eyes for him too - meaning Jim
Ahhh, that was lovely! I live Jim/Plato and their TOTALLY TRUE LOVE.
I really didn't see any sparks between Jim and Judy, but Jim and Plato... man, the way Plato was so in love with Jim, and how much Jim cared for Plato... beautiful, just beautiful.
@WolfQueene.Yes.Absolutely.As a gay man i recognized the affection and chemistry the first time i saw the movie, which was many years ago.In my opinion also, their love was beautiful. Sal Mineo and James Dean were both excellent in portraying that.I didn't hurt that both of these men had relationships with men in real life.
I am NOT a Beyonce fan but this video was beautiful... Plato and Jim would have made such a cute couple. This video reminds me of someone I currently have a crush on and feel I am in Plato shoes and my crush in Jims. If only he knew how good and happy he makes me feel when I am around him. The same way Plato felt when he was around Jim
@moggyparty Sal Mineo, as Plato, opened up all his misgivings about running away from home because he does not feel that he belongs to that home. Since the days of James Dean the domestic and social problem of being unloved by his very own family is recurrent in the United States up to the present.
@moggyparty Hey moggy. That's how I looked at it. I never even realized this "gay subtext" was in the film. Is this just people making that up, or is there evidence that this is true? If so, I'd like to see a link to it in my mailbox. It has to be what the director or a a writer or producer said. Not some armchair movie analyst. The way I looked at Plato and his relationship was that Sal lacked a lot of relationships in his life... he had no brothers or family. He looked up to Jim like a brother.
I think through modern eyes it may look like Plato has some kind of "gaze" for Jim, but I don't think that was the case when they were making this movie. Plato is just such a lonely character, abondoned by everyone. He's just looking for someone to call Dad. I don't think there was any kind of homosexual tension between them, it's just Plato's way of coping. Sure James might have had his own struggles with sexuality, but in no way does it translate to any of his films. At least in my opinion.
@StripeShirtLesbians There is indeed an implied gaze. The first time we see Plato, he's looking at Alan Ladd, hinting his admiration of/desire for rugged masculinity. Actor Sal Mineo was gay and James Dean was bisexual. Director Nick Ray was himself bisexual (he was lovers with Natalie Wood and Mineo) and he directed Mineo to look at Dean the way Ray admired Wood. The subtext is definitely there. YouTube won't let me link, but check out Ebert's review and Vanity Fair's article for sources.
I love this movie. James Dean was such an epic actor. He could play any part without playing it, as many actors get themselves stuck as their character, James Dean was James Dean, yet in a different role, but never just a character.
Forget what all these haters are saying! They don't recognize the 'gay undertones' and longing to be loved between the 'Plato' and 'Jim' characters!!!
Oh well, I must confess it`s a very very nice and beautiful, great and sad video, but it seems for everybody who dont`t watched "Rebel without a cause" like Jim and Plato are gay...
I was a kid like Plato, and remember how I felt about my own "Jamie." I have always loved this movie, and a lot of that has to do with this. Beautifully done, Moulinrye! =)
to say this is "so gay" is totally missing the point. throughout the entire movie, plato's love for james dean's character is shown through facial expressions, deeds, and conversations between the two. this video just emphasizes that point. Good work!!!
@jlclvsjpm.Thank you.I could not have said it better myself.I have to buy this classic so i can watch it whenever i want.Wonderful performances by two talented and very beautiful men.
Love this video. Poor Plato, was so inlove with Jim. But Jim never understood him until the end when Plato smell the red jacket from his friend Jim. THIS HAS BEEN ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIES EVER!!!
@edgarca2000 Does that remind you of Brokeback Mountain? Well, Ang Lee, the director of Brokeback Mountain, said that: "Love is a force of nature." What then is so strange about Plato loving Jim and Jim loving Plato in return in Rebel Without A Cause?
R.I.P James Dean (Jim) and Sal Mineo (Plato) you two are in a much better place now :)

The title suits right for the time that it was released. It came out in the 50's, where basically being gay was considered a taboo.

Teenager Sal Mineo's acting was superb. Although just a movie, it SEEMED REAL. My God, the way that boy looked at James Dean LOL!

IF A SON HAS RESPECT & LOVE FOR
HIS FATHER, DOES THAT MEAN
THAT THAT IS A "GAY" RELATIONSHIP ?
SOME PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK SO.
TO THEM EVERYTHING THEY SEE IS "GAY"
SHOWING FRIENDSHIP & AFFECTION
DOESN´T MAKE YOU "GAY", OR DOES IT ?

Both James Dean and Sal Mineo were at least bisexual. There are rumors that they had an affair but I don't believe them.
vanessalove182 2 years ago
As you must know if he were outed in 1955 that woulda killed his career and essentially his life woulda been over
He would not have been able to get much work in hollywood
Jimmy was still struggling with his sexuality
Most of his close friends pretty much told the author that Jimmy lived his as a gay man and indeed the author spoke with an old boyfriend of his
I don't care what people say about him he was still a fantastic actor and became those characters and who cares if he was gay
FLAIR4PREZ 2 years ago
Hmm, I thought I already replied to you. Didn't I? :-/
I did find that biography online and it arrived today. I haven't had a chance to read it yet but I loved the pictures. :P
And I don't mind if James Dean was gay or bisexual or whatever. Usually when I find out a celebrity's gay I end up liking them more...

Awesome I am glad ya found it
Its really good and I am sure you'll like it
and yeah the pics are great

This is one of my favourite films ever. James Dean was so amazing. I love this video. ;)
QueenShebaVIII 2 years ago
Me too
I am such a fan of his work and Sal Mineo was so cute in this
Also one of my favorite films of all time
I'm only 26 and I just love these old movies and of course I love anything with Jimmy Dean in it
FLAIR4PREZ 2 years ago
Which biography was that? I'm going to have to read it. ^_^ Did it say in which part of the film the kiss was supposed to happen?
Yeah, I'm 15 and I love his films too. Last nigth I watched Giant for the first time as well, which was great if a bit too long. xP
QueenShebaVIII 2 years ago
um it never said what part of the movie the kiss was supposed to happen
It's called Boulevard of Broken Dreams by Paul Alexander and its about 15 yrs old
Not sure if its still available but good luck
Also you may not wanna read it as it opens the lid essentially on his private life including confirming the rumours that he was a homosexual
Most of his relationships with women were platonic and the studio set him up on dates for fear he might get outed

o_o was there a kissing scene censored there??.well anyways love jimmy ñ_ñ
airsunlight 2 years ago
Yep there was to be a scene where Jim and Plato kissed but the censors balked at the time so it was cut out
Also the love between them was to be shown much more then it was but the censors at the time wouldn't allow any references to homosexuality
So now all we get are implied references to their love
Plus its been said Jimmy Dean was gay in real life
I would love to see this movie remade today with the vision the director had in mind
FLAIR4PREZ 2 years ago
Was there really for sure a censored kiss, not just rumours of one?
QueenShebaVIII 2 years ago
Yep its widely talked about in a biography I read a few months ago about James Dean
It was pretty much confirmed
