Tom Ayers article in Cape Breton Post regarding elder abuse. Donna Dill states "When you look at it the way 30 (cases) doesn't seem to be too many. Well Donna you know who I am and if you would like to revisit my home in questions I will provide you with physical evidence to prove my claims. I feel sorry for residents and staff. 3 shifts of staff and abuse & neglect occurring. Who is not doing a complete inspection of patients on their shifts. Public Inquiry required.. One case is to too many
In the Cape Breton Post last week an article by Tom Ayers Abuse Numbers don't tell whole story: doctor.Jeannie Ferguson a geriatric psychiatrist in Cape Breton Health Authority states staff are are more likely to suffer violence. Well I have seen incidents of what this doctor states but what about the residents neglect and abuse. Where is the staff in these institutions? Staffing levels related to requirements 33 years ago not taking into account the change in patient health and mental state.
We have had 71 incidents of abuse reported & 31 cases of abuse founded in NS. How many not reported?? Well I was responsible for one investigation in Sydney where no abuse was founded. Well I have documentation in my possession regarding this home, photos other individuals accounts regarding this home & have just received another Notice to Pursuant to Protect Property served against me. I have contacted our new health Minister Karen Casey & waiting to hear from her. Who is Accountability here
Here is ONE good reason to NOT visit Nova Scotia...
Residents of nursing facilities in Nova Scotia suffered 30 incidents of physical, financial or emotional abuse by staff members over a one-year period, which an Opposition politician calls a "disturbing" signal that some caregivers are overworked and undertrained.
The list obtained by The Canadian Press under access to information laws is from 73 investigations done by the Health Department between Oct. 1, 2007, and Sept. 30, 2008.
Ok buddy. The gloves are off now. I am a LPN in a nursing facility and we have the LEAST percentage of abusive incidents you FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT ASSHOLE!
Just stating your in no place to talk as if you know alot about medical related facts when you've yet to have the full experience of the job. Most LPNs don't have much experience in that field.
I'm pretty sure I know what tough is I'm not retarded. I'm sure your so strong mister since I'm a good little boy I'm gonna go because someone on the internet told me to. Please give me a break and stop being a ass to "kids" and go back to making a crappy salary at the age of 37.
My point is, my salary is not crappy. I live quite well. Nice roof, new car and a full time job. It is sweet man. There ARE worse ways to live little duder.
I'm not rich but average and I think your the one who needs to grow up trying to act big by calling me a little boy. I'm not a little boy I'm a teenager, and I have more maturity because unlike you I'm gonna end this convo because I've got better things to do.
what was the name of that tune, Sunday shopping, i think if he forced it on us, well lets face we have to keep things moving, so lets force the post office and goverment offices to be open as well
Hey,you know what? Letterman and people who are rich like him will be the only ones who will be able to afford to live here soon!!! But hey ,they'll have some really nice roads to drive on.Rodney said so. He said the gas tax will fix roads, well we know he's makin' a killin' on that tax!!!! I expect to see Rodney fixin' my road real soon!!!!
Ya know? I'm not only a Nova Scotian, but "semi-retired" (more like out of practice) violin/fiddle player, and that is hysterical! It's about time a government official didn't take himself so damn seriously all the time! The last time someone in government was this much fun on camera was when Preston Manning got "interviewed" by "Preston Manning" on Air Farce.
Hey Dave the Number 1 reason is Nova Scotia owes billions of US dollars, to SAUDI ARABIA the same CONservative party government this fiddler was arranged to get elected party head, through the most hated Prime Minister in the history of Canada-Brian Mulroney.<When Brian 'Mugsy' Mulroney through using dumb Nova Scotians got elected-it was the death of democracy.
No, not the KGB. Just out trying to make the point that Positivity gets things done. Negativity without action doesn't. Also, as seen in past posts, sticking up for a long discriminated-against culture when need be.
So Cam 24 is back with his negativity, criticizing the new way to promote anthing invoving business(In this case NS tourism/spin-offs):mass media i.e. TV, radio, print advertising, and now a new, cheap and effective way:Youtube! You sure it's nothing personal? I figured out who you are. You only live about 40 min. to the south of the Premier. Seeing as you play the same style of music as him, will you be all friendly to him next time you meet him face to face? What's the real problem?
The video is a posative attempt to promote tourism in nova scotia. Interesting that most of the negative comments have come from people who have subsequently had something negative to say about Mr. MacDonald's political record. If the man was a liberal posters like Poseidon's comments would cease to exist. We'd then have tories saying they hated the video because the premier was a liberal. Sad that there is always someone who must turn something posative into something negative.
nicosoup: I am a totally non-partisan voter!!! My negative comments are based on the fact that I don't find this video funny and that politicians paid in excess of $100,000 per year should be occupying their time with matters that are much more pressing than this stupid video. If Rodny Macdonald was a liberal he would look just as stupid to me on this video.
nicosoup: What Rodney MacDonald reminds me on this trying to impress an American talk show host is a pet when they are begging or performing for their favourite treat. Are we that desperate here when we have to resort to these measures to enhance the almighty tourist industry?
Get some class; the two of you. And Poseidon 500, the "little bastard" that you're cowardly name-calling was apparently a very good athlete and hockey player; it would be funny to see him ragdoll you.
Yes, 'Poseidon5oo', 'poser' is exactly the right word to describe Rodney MacDonald. At first, I thought I liked him, but then the clouds cleared and I realized that he's another arrogant prick who thinks that everyone else is lower than him and therefore, will buy into whatever crap he chooses to serve to us. Sorry, Rodney, the meal of bullshit you're serving up isn't good enough for me!
Rodney MacDonald shows his dis-loyalty to Canada right from the get-go with his demeaning comment about Thunder Bay...which is a part of Canada, Rodney, in case you forgot in your attempt to charm the less-intelligent voters. The people of Thunder Bay must be pretty pissed that he'd make them out to be short-sighted and dim-witted with that remark.
Rodney's thoughts...."Oh, I am going to succeed where Hamm failed with bill 68.... and then call up all those who oppose it and tell them how dissapointed I am with them."...which is EXACTLY what he did. What a friggin' twit!
Rodney MacDonald has his nose as far up the ass of the U.S. agenda as Stephen Harper(who has about as many ties to U.S. groups as George Bush!) Harper is happy to play as great a role as he can in attempting to hand over Canada to the U.S. take-over attempt. This incredibly lame video(meant to gather voter support from voters they consider dumbed-down enough that they would buy this crap)had nothing to do with some American that they think is funny because they're told to believe that.
Poseidon500's comments aren't worth responding to. There was some intelligent debate prior to this; most of it done with class. We all finished our chat anyway, Poseidon500.
I guess that gives me the last word. Rodney MacDonald is an ignorant arrogant adulterous little bastard who does not DESERVE the honour of being Nova Scotias premier. This video is lame, what he is trying to do to health care workers is appauling, and he is going to LOSE the next election.
He also mentions Mike Huckabe!!!! So friggin what!? Oh just like a conservative to talk about an American candidate like we are the same. What a fuckin' tool!
I can't stand this prick. Why? Because I am a health care worker, and he is a conservative dictator who is trying to take away my right to strike. I say...screw him because he's losing the next election anyway.
The real #1 reason for celebrities to come to Nova Scotia is that it is sparsely populated and has reasonably polite people. David Letterman could hang out like a regular guy in any downtown bar. Kevin Spacey likes NS. He could walk along the waterfronts and only be approached by a small handful of gawkers. Although Halifax is starting to have almost its share of urban violent crime these days, which is a shame.
Those that are making negative comments have never attempted to put it ALL on the line in public and will NEVER understand what strength + character it takes - Rodney, you've got guts + talent! Well done!
I am from NS. I'm now living in Denver. I'll always be a Bluenoser. I love this clip. Can't understand why so many people have gotten so upset...lighten up. This is a great clip. I have passed this on to many of my friends - from all over the world.... Two Thumbs Up Rodney!!!
I totally understand what you mean. I am myself fascinated by the history of Gael people and their culture and I think you should keep defending it, but don't waste your time with somebody who obviously does not appreciate it. There will always be someone, somewhere who thinks that they know better than anybody else.
Anyways, it was a real pleasure communicating with you. Take care.
I can't believe that the two of you are having this argument. I was born and raised in Gaspé,QC but I wish I was born somewhere on the Cape Breton Island (even if it was in the bush!!)only to have the chance of learning a tiny tiny bit of those steps. You guys don't realize how lucky you are to hear and see LIVE performers! I only get to hear or see them through my cd's or DVD's, so would you please stop... I think Rodney and all the fiddlers and stepdancers of CB rock.
cerefamily:I agree. I'm sick of arguing. However, I will always stick up for the intelligent, centuries-old Gaelic culture of which it's descendants should be proud. That's all. I felt it had to be defended.I am also sticking up for this positive vid. and trying to see beyond partisanism. That's it. Sick of arguing.I will galdly agree to a truce with atoz94. :)
Mary Janet MacDonald, Warner Sisters & many instructors taught this simple step in beginner class, complicated only to those who no longer have use of their legs. He could have done a few ankle bends to impress us who are culturally ignorant. Surely you'll reply to exp proper Gaelic term for ankle bends & how every muscle should move to make it sound more difficult or argue it's an Acadian step. Blah, blah, it's still novice.
You seem overly defensive. Is that you Rodney or Sasha? Be proud of your heritage but don't exaggerate tradition for self gratification. While you stalk posted comments I'm off to discover what's happening in the world today. Swing 2-3-4 deedle deedle dum dumb Tory.
Not Rodney,Sasha or Tory.Funny how Gaels are often victims of bigotry and people like you get away with it.If it was a native dance or African Can.folk song, nothing would be said in this manner.I'm just sticking up for an intelligent oral culture(and complicated non-novice artform, when advanced steps are done correctly, efficiently, and at full speed by a professional;not a child at half speed whose name-dropping parents are seemingly as innocent as they are.Ones-in-the-know would laugh you off.
Comment was specifically directed 2 your statement pertaining to this video where he does the backstep not other steps he performed elsewhere. You're an expert, post a video reply of yourself demonstrating the broader version of this art form? Why do you assume I'm not Scottish Cape Bretoner? I'm willing to bet you're from Inverness County, same as I. Your complicated art form comment is misleading to those who are seeing for the 1st time just one step of traditional dance performed here.
oops atoz94,I meant name-dropping uncles/aunts.Your comments BTW are akin to saying skating/stick-handling are novice.Insulting to someone and others BTW who have LIVED the Gaelic culture and know your analysis to be false, uninformed, naive, and ignorant.Don't exaggerate your knowledge of or closeness to a culture of which you obviously have not been truly "inside." And that has nothing to do with what cultural icons you can name or a Gaelic phrase you can drop, but what you lived & inherited.
O.K. I agree he was just doing one step (backstep), one which I've seen done incorrectly, believe it or not, by people dancing solo, and complicated to lots of learners. There are plenty of good vids of CB stepdancing on youtube. I'm warming up to you if you're from there :) There are many in Inv. Co. who haven't absorbed the tradition though. Trying to figure out if you're one of them or not? ;) Still, positive video Mr. Premier, even if you're Tory! :)
Yep, my real name is Atoz94 and I want everyone to know my niece can do the backstep (sarcasm). Where did I name drop? I hate that particular type of parents/guardians etc which you refer to. You missed my point, which is it's so easy any young child can grasp that particular step. You do not personally know me,my family, our history or traditions. Assumptions will make an ass of you as they say.(Tried to post this already but don't see it on the page, I apologize if you receive it twice.)
I've seen young children and adults, after lessons not able to grasp that particular step correctly, often missing the"hop" in the middle of it.Assuming that"any young child can grasp that particular step" or adult, for that matter, could "make an ass of you as they say."Here's something that can be safely assumed:Some can grow up with a culture in their own back yards of/in which they never/rarely really participate, appreciate, or understand. You may be one;you may not be.Just sticking up for it.
atoz94 the technicalities of step dancing are negligable. This video was a cheap diversionary tactic by MacDonald and his cronies 2 deflect the issues that our province is facing. As for "nsmusicfan" you are arguing with views that obscured by partisanship. He so chooses to segregate Cape Breton into halves in one of his comments. Now that's real down home cultural spirit if I've ever seen it.
BTW cam24, my comments weren't meant to "segregate cape Breton into halves." I was pointing out that the majority of Galeic culture is found outside of post-industrial Cape Breton and have, as a cultural feature, different ways of accentually/verbally expressing themselves, generally speaking than that discussed earlier. Unity and respect with a sense of commonality through "islandness" remain strong. I really am sick of arguing with viewers who seem negative and bitter.
It's condescending for you to accuse me of being bitter just because I criticized a maneuvre of a local politician and his cronies. I did not agree with this video or the comments that were pouring in so I decided to add my own which were in opposition to yours. I'm running out if ink. Adios.
Back shuffle back shuffle repeat tap tap is considered a "complicated artform" bahahahaha! I'll be sure tell my 5 year old neice who nailed it during her first lesson. I laughed more at that statement then this so called brave initiative.
You must mean back shuffle (hit left foot, heel toe on right) hop, back shuffle next foot, repeat. He's doing the backstep while playing the violin. She would have been taught the "main" "hop" basic step first lesson. There are hundreds of other steps that are variations and much more complicated than that;if she's lucky(and talented),she may master them in years.Your comments are an example of Gaelic cultural ignorance similar to I was referring to earlier.
It baffles me as to why there may be a need to spend government time and money on enticing someone like David Letterman to Nova Scotia. I won't even waste my time listing the many ways our government can help entice people to come and make help us prosper as a province, not just as a tourist destination place. How can you not take it seriously when tax payers money is spent on such an unnecessary production. Oops! Try again. Silly really, on a wordly spectrum of things.
and that's why you'll never be in office. Do you seriously think that this video was made for the sole reason for David Letterman to visit NS? and gov't "Time and Money" spent on initiatives like this? give me a break. Go to New England, Britain, or Austrailia, and you'll see advertising to visit Nova Scotia. Next time, wait till someone requests your "wordly advice" because you just made yourself look retarded
This vid in response to Ellen Page's appearance on Letterman, she talked about being from Lockport, now living in Halifax . If you saw the interview, she spoke to Dave about coming to Hfx. In response, our Premier made this video with reference to Dave's usual Top Ten List. I think it was very clever and for you guys, you take yourselves waaaayyy too seriously and good luck out West!we are doing fine here without YA'LL
When you are referring to people "OUT WEST" your comments encompass about 75% of the population of Nova Scotia. If we haven't moved there permanently, we are back and forth, hoping something will fly back here but it never happens. Also, a very high percentage of us who havent migrated, have offspring out there. Don't spit up in the air, it might come back down on your nose.
again, you are taking things way too seriously. This is not a debate about people going out west work it's about a freakin' video. Which I thought was very clever. Oh and btw, if you are going to use clever anecdotes, at least get them right!!! Don't spit, whatever whatever, did you make that up yourself? muuuuhahhahhha
As I said, tourism promo is one way to improve the economy. There are jobs that pay more than min. wage i.e. some cultural artists, front desk hotel staff,Tourist Info. Centre staff. Not to mention spin-offs to businesses visited by tourists. Can criticize but that's not gonna change things. His positive attempts may.
My tourism comment is in response to camt24 and their unconstructive, negative comments with no alternatives seen throughout.Good to see most posting enjoy the vid and think it is positive for NS!
I hope nobody expected this to fly without negative criticism. Speaking of constructiveness, perhaps the NS government could come up with something more enticing than this stupid video to impress the rest of the world.
Over 25 000 views. I don't deem that as being stupid. I call it an advertising success. Sometimes you have to do things differently to "impress" in an increasingly instant gratification pop-culture-oriented world.
Good post mtcampbell. Time will tell whether or not this was a success. If there is no increase in tourism this summer, then it can be deemed to a dud. Even if Dave Letteman comes to NS, it won't mean diddly squat to me or you. I still have to head 3,000 miles to the westward to work. Can't even come close to paying the bills on tourism wages, already tried it.
I agree about doing things differently sometimes but what's so different about this? The 10 Top List has been used to death for over 2 DECADES!! In this era ppl travel to experience real culture, not b/c of pop culture promos, unless they are not able to think for themselves. Americans preferred traveling to NS when our $ was significantly lower then the USD. While the our $ remains strong tourism from the US will continue to drop, can't blame them.
Brasdor 821:The top ten list has not, however, been used by a politician to promote his /her province. Therefore,it is a different approach.Cape breton fiddling and stepdancing is real Gaelic culture, revealed in the promo.I already mentioned the equal dollar problem.Nobody from Central to Western CB say "'by". BTW, tasteless comment.
This reeks of cheese & lame sexual innuendos. The fact that he's a provincial leader doesn't make it intriguing. Did you notice Peter Mansbridge seemed to have a hard time keeping straight face when reporting this story on the National? I doubt it was b/c of the jokes. As someone who celebrates traditional music & dance all I could think was "no he didn't" after watching the 5 sec fiddle/gig at the end, not as great a revelation as you think. BTW NS celebrates many cultures.
Bd821:The fact that he's a prov. leader using youtube may not intrigue you but it's still a different approach; that was the arg. Re:Mansbridge--a light-hearted report on a fun promo by a leader.I celebrate trad. music and dance as well.If only for a few secs.I'm glad to see a true purveyor promote it instead of usual past "tartan wielders" in promotion who don't know their history.Yes, NS celebrates many cultures and does so by supporting the show"Drum" for instance.
With CB being noted as a top destination in many resent publications and him wanting Letterman to come to Hfx there are many issues to be addressed or these publications will soon be printing negative feedback which no one wants. Most "tartan wielders" play bagpipes. One fiddler comes to mind, Ashley. You think because Rodney's wearing a suit it classes it up? Slainte Mhath
Drum was just one example of other culture promotion.Your "stereotypical" "hillbilly" fiddler performs 2 complicated artforms in this vid that many (usually those who label them as so) cannot perform. You missed my point on tartan wielders:Ignorant tourism and bus.promoters of Victorianesque tartan-kilted Scottishness that's foreign to the Gaelic ancestors who came to NE NS and CB.Rodney and Ashley:True artform purveyors.
I hear 'by used all over the island, and fr some on the mainland also. Perhaps you're too busy listening to yourself talk to notice. When I worked in the NS tourism industry many American travelers I encountered complained of the high taxes, lack of shopping & facilities in rural areas (duh), poor accommodations by their standards, terrible road conditions and many even compared NS to a 3rd world county, but the scenery is lovely. I hope Letterman brings his magic wand with him.
No,'bye is not used all over the island.Only when you get across the Seal Island Bridge and into the cultural melting pot of post-industrial CB.Most Central and Western Cape Bretoners, the majority of whom are of Gaelic descent don't like to be included in the stereotypical How's she goin' by? accent that's come to dominate the Canadian consciousness. The negatives you mention aren't MacDonald's fault. They're the result of the region's political economy dilemma since confederation.
I know it is stereotypical which is why I used it,just as stereotypical as the hillbilly fiddler portrayed in this vid. I didn't say EVERYONE in CB uses it and certainly not EVERY person in Ind CB does. That my dear was stereotypical. Fiddle/dance were prominent in my household but there are many OTHER cultures which make up NS today. Cross the Causeway much or just to see Drum once a year? I didn't say the negatives were his fault but as premier isn't he responsible now?
The CB fiddler is not stereotypical but a strong accurate representative of the majority culture of NE NS and CB. Happy our leader can portray that culture. If he was an Acadien folk singer,a Miqmaq musican,or an indie out-of-tune singer songwriter it would be fine as long as he's promoting the province with positive intentions. A bheil thu a thuig sin? Slainte gu dearamh!BTW I happen to be from CB living in Hfx.Yes, he's responsible and every small positive step like this benefits.
The regional desparities of Atlantic Canada is largely due to our local politicians looking after their own personal agendas. i.e. the almighty pension and stuffing their pockets any way that they can. They haven't been looking after the business at hand like Rodney MacDonald is doing now as he sucks up to Stephen Harper.
cam24:Phrases like "business at hand","issues at hand" and politicians "stuffing their pockets" can be depicted as bitter rhetoric.Advanced courses with papers on Atlantic Canadian political economy gave me more vast reasons for economic disparity involving past policy-making and business-political decisions before Rodney MacDonald, favouring Central Canadian interests since confederation. Representation by population voting without limits has much to do with this as well.
I'm fully aware of all of your points and in agreement with some of them. They are contributing factors, however, this still doesn't justify the inaction trends by our local policians over many decades. The fact remains that there is only one politician in Atlantic Canada that ever took a stand against these issues and we all know who that is. It's also a fact that he's not getting much support from his "comrades" in the region.
Majority of the 25000 viewers are like me, from NS...or have relatives from NS who told them about this vid. Ellen Page did a great job on Letterman, Rodney how ever I perceived as juvenile. As a Caper I was expecting actual humour. I hear Rodney will be joining 1/2 of NS in Fort Mc after the next election, gots to pay da alimony 'by!! My comment above was in reply to your comment as well.
Hey people who are feeling embarrassed, get over yourselves. You're taking yourselves way too seriously. And, stop being so fickle. I'm proud of the quirky things that make Nova Scotians (and all Canadians, for that matter) unique. It's one of the things that makes us so down to earth and I think that is one of the reasons why tourists love to come back to NS again and again.
I am feeling that you are a proud Canadian...CHEERS, that makes two of us! During my travels, I've heard wonderful comments about Maritimers that I was sooo proud to hear. We Maritimers are appreciated for being friendly, good-natured, fun-loving people with a talent for warm hospitality...plus, our country is absolutely beautiful!!! That is why tourists love coming here!
It has nothing to do with some flip-flopping politician's failed attempt at humor, which was really just his lame attempt at charming the vote of the local yokels.
p.s. Curious....please explain your 'fickle' comment. How does (not buying into some politician's lame attempt to win back local popularity) make us 'fickle'?
IllimiKnotty, perhaps "fickle" was a bad choice of words and I should retract that statement. I saw this clip as promo for NS. Is he trying to regain some popularity? With his track record being what it has been to date, maybe he is. The majority of comments on this clip were targeting Mr. MacDonald's job performance and personal character, instead of commenting on the clip itself. So having said that, if you put aside "who" is in the video, what do you think of the content?
I would love to see a political figure...or any Nova Scotian, for that matter, promoting the gorgeous province that is our beloved Nova Scotia...and will stay tuned for that to happen ; ) The content in that video was of a level that any drunk at a bar could have come up with.
I'm not embarrassed, I'm pissed off. I'm pissed off because our premier is spending time on this idiocy instead of dealing with the issues at hand in our province. Why the emphasis on attracting tourists when our own people are leaving in droves. Perhaps we could have Oprah come down and coddle him during the next election campaign too.
One of the issues at hand is improving the economy.New ways to promote tourism is one mode, done here.Outmigration has been chronic in NS since the 1870s. Not MacDonald's fault. The Come Home campaign was ridiculed yet complaints about losing people? The Premier's Atlantic Gateway initiative is certainlt a valient attempt to keep people here. Some ideas instead of personal and political attacks would help here.
If I did have solutions for our economy, that would make me an economics expert. That should just a pretty heavy consultant's fee. Why would I publish it on youtube. Besides I'm too busy trying to secure work 3,000 miles to the westward.
This video is almost as funny as the Atlantic Accord fiasco. It's just as funny as the campaign to get people to return home to live and work in Nova Scotia. It's about as funny as the Sunday Shopping/Stat Holiday flip-flop. I'm sure David Letterman can solve a lot of our problems with the province being in the delapidated state that it is. Ha f---ing ha.
If it was...ole Rodney would have hired professional writers to prepare his jokes...as the ones he came up with would never be considered funny by anyone but a few low-brow Canadians. Think about it...Americans are eating apple pie, not blueberry grunt! No American, including, Letterman, would get that joke(or any others that didn't refer to igloos and dog-sleds). This was a very desperate and cheesy ploy to reclaim lost support from voters. That video is embarrassing to Nova Scotians.
Good post illumiKnotty. I fear that political campaigning in tabloid form might become prevalent in the future. I was feeling alright when I started viewing this video, however, by the end of it my stomach had been involuntarily emptied.
Who cares if some over-rated talk show host came here??? He's got zero magnetism and he's not even funny(heck, he's not even hot).Bring someone like John Stewart or Dave Chapelle here and you're talking some real entertainment!I feel embarrassed as a Nova Scotian after viewing that video. (Looking you straight in the eyes)you do realize that the making of this video was NOT an attempt to bring David Letterman to Nova Scotia!!!
At least we all know that he has a sense of humour and he's not one of those stuck up pressy people in a two piece suit with a two way radio (hint hint Ottawa). LOL
Nova Scotia, it is time that we start having a bit more pride in our great province. This is a province that at one time was so wealthy, we were greatly sought after to enter into confederation. What would the rest of Canada think about this stereotypical display of Atlantic/Backwaterness. Who is David Letterman, that we must loose our minds the moment the province is mentioned on American Primetime ?
Exactly. Letterman proably forgot he said something about visiting Nova Scotia 2 seconds after he said it. Are we that desperate? It sure looks like it.
All I have to say is...That's the coolest thing a Premier has done in my opinion. I would pay good money to see Dalton McGinty do that. This has inspired me to want to visit NS.
I thought this would be dorky when I heard about it on the news, but it was way funnier that I expected - and, I might add, way funnier than many of Dave's.
Even if Dave does not come, it's still a good publicity for the rest of Canada. I'm sure it will attract a lot of tourists. They air reports all across the country, so that's like free publicity!
Watching conservatives try to crack jokes or be entertaining is just painful. I'm not watching this crap.

urrude 3 years ago
Ok buddy. The gloves are off now. I am a LPN in a nursing facility and we have the LEAST percentage of abusive incidents you FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT ASSHOLE!
Now shall I kick your ass now or later?
Poseidon500 2 years ago
LPN....my mom is a BscN and RN and teaches nursing at a college, nurse for almost 20 years. Your not even a registered nurse.
JuniorArtist27 2 years ago
I never said that I was. So thank you for stating the obvious.
Oh..and ole' Rodney suffered a very humiliating defeat. I enjoyed it very much : )
Poseidon500 2 years ago
Just stating your in no place to talk as if you know alot about medical related facts when you've yet to have the full experience of the job. Most LPNs don't have much experience in that field.
JuniorArtist27 2 years ago
And what would you personally know about it besides what your mum has told you? Is she one of those LPN haters or something>
Buddy, I have seen stuff that you would not believe.
Also, don't insult my profession. I certainly do have the full experience of my job.
Now start making sense, or go frig off.
Or are you yet another dummy?
Poseidon500 2 years ago
Oh..never mind. You are a 14 year old know nothing little kid.
Poseidon500 2 years ago
Yes are your a 37 year old LPN who spends his time acting tough and intelligent on youtube.
JuniorArtist27 2 years ago
First thing, you have no idea what tough is you spoiled little punk.
Second thing, I do not act, I just am. I am not a fake, unlike you.
Now do us all a favor and piss off like a good little boy.
Poseidon500 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure I know what tough is I'm not retarded. I'm sure your so strong mister since I'm a good little boy I'm gonna go because someone on the internet told me to. Please give me a break and stop being a ass to "kids" and go back to making a crappy salary at the age of 37.
JuniorArtist27 2 years ago
My point is, my salary is not crappy. I live quite well. Nice roof, new car and a full time job. It is sweet man. There ARE worse ways to live little duder.
Poseidon500 2 years ago
Well I'm glad I've got plenty of time left before I'm old enough to be working. I wouldn't want to end up making 35-43 thousand salary like LPNs do.
JuniorArtist27 2 years ago
Why? Are you too good for that?
If you are then you do not have a good grasp of reality boy. I mean, who are you, some rich kid who thinks he knows how the world works?
You know nothing boy. You earn it. It is not handed to you.
I live just fine off of 50,000 a year.
Poseidon500 2 years ago
I'm not rich but average and I think your the one who needs to grow up trying to act big by calling me a little boy. I'm not a little boy I'm a teenager, and I have more maturity because unlike you I'm gonna end this convo because I've got better things to do.

Sad that there is always someone who must turn something posative into something negative.
nicosoup 3 years ago
nicosoup: I am a totally non-partisan voter!!! My negative comments are based on the fact that I don't find this video funny and that politicians paid in excess of $100,000 per year should be occupying their time with matters that are much more pressing than this stupid video. If Rodny Macdonald was a liberal he would look just as stupid to me on this video.
camt24 3 years ago
nicosoup: What Rodney MacDonald reminds me on this trying to impress an American talk show host is a pet when they are begging or performing for their favourite treat. Are we that desperate here when we have to resort to these measures to enhance the almighty tourist industry?

Get some class; the two of you. And Poseidon 500, the "little bastard" that you're cowardly name-calling was apparently a very good athlete and hockey player; it would be funny to see him ragdoll you.
nsmusicfan 3 years ago
Yes, 'Poseidon5oo', 'poser' is exactly the right word to describe Rodney MacDonald. At first, I thought I liked him, but then the clouds cleared and I realized that he's another arrogant prick who thinks that everyone else is lower than him and therefore, will buy into whatever crap he chooses to serve to us. Sorry, Rodney, the meal of bullshit you're serving up isn't good enough for me!
IllumiKnotty 3 years ago
Rodney MacDonald shows his dis-loyalty to Canada right from the get-go with his demeaning comment about Thunder Bay...which is a part of Canada, Rodney, in case you forgot in your attempt to charm the less-intelligent voters. The people of Thunder Bay must be pretty pissed that he'd make them out to be short-sighted and dim-witted with that remark.
IllumiKnotty 3 years ago
He is nothing but a poser anyway.

IllumiKnotty 3 years ago
Poseidon500's comments aren't worth responding to. There was some intelligent debate prior to this; most of it done with class. We all finished our chat anyway, Poseidon500.

I guess that gives me the last word. Rodney MacDonald is an ignorant arrogant adulterous little bastard who does not DESERVE the honour of being Nova Scotias premier. This video is lame, what he is trying to do to health care workers is appauling, and he is going to LOSE the next election.
Poseidon500 3 years ago
He also mentions Mike Huckabe!!!! So friggin what!? Oh just like a conservative to talk about an American candidate like we are the same. What a fuckin' tool!
Poseidon500 4 years ago 2
I can't stand this prick. Why? Because I am a health care worker, and he is a conservative dictator who is trying to take away my right to strike. I say...screw him because he's losing the next election anyway.
Poseidon500 4 years ago 2
This clip is a little cheesy, but it means well.

I can't believe that the two of you are having this argument. In response to the culturally ignorant comment of atoz94.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
Mary Janet MacDonald, Warner Sisters & many instructors taught this simple step in beginner class, complicated only to those who no longer have use of their legs. He could have done a few ankle bends to impress us who are culturally ignorant. Surely you'll reply to exp proper Gaelic term for ankle bends & how every muscle should move to make it sound more difficult or argue it's an Acadian step. Blah, blah, it's still novice.
atoz94 4 years ago 2
You seem overly defensive. Is that you Rodney or Sasha? Be proud of your heritage but don't exaggerate tradition for self gratification. While you stalk posted comments I'm off to discover what's happening in the world today. Swing 2-3-4 deedle deedle dum dumb Tory.
atoz94 4 years ago 2
Not Rodney,Sasha or Tory.Funny how Gaels are often victims of bigotry and people like you get away with it.If it was a native dance or African Can.folk song, nothing would be said in this manner.I'm just sticking up for an intelligent oral culture(and complicated non-novice artform, when advanced steps are done correctly, efficiently, and at full speed by a professional;not a child at half speed whose name-dropping parents are seemingly as innocent as they are.Ones-in-the-know would laugh you off.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
Comment was specifically directed 2 your statement pertaining to this video where he does the backstep not other steps he performed elsewhere. You're an expert, post a video reply of yourself demonstrating the broader version of this art form? Why do you assume I'm not Scottish Cape Bretoner? I'm willing to bet you're from Inverness County, same as I. Your complicated art form comment is misleading to those who are seeing for the 1st time just one step of traditional dance performed here.
atoz94 4 years ago
oops atoz94,I meant name-dropping uncles/aunts.Your comments BTW are akin to saying skating/stick-handling are novice.Insulting to someone and others BTW who have LIVED the Gaelic culture and know your analysis to be false, uninformed, naive, and ignorant.Don't exaggerate your knowledge of or closeness to a culture of which you obviously have not been truly "inside." And that has nothing to do with what cultural icons you can name or a Gaelic phrase you can drop, but what you lived & inherited.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
Yep, my real name is Atoz94 and I want everyone to know my niece can do the backstep (sarcasm). Where did I name drop? I hate that particular type of parents/guardians etc which you refer to. You missed my point, which is it's so easy any young child can grasp that particular step. You do not personally know me,my family, our history or traditions. Assumptions will make an ass of you as they say.(Tried to post this already but don't see it on the page, I apologize if you receive it twice.)
atoz94 4 years ago
I've seen young children and adults, after lessons not able to grasp that particular step correctly, often missing the"hop" in the middle of it.Assuming that"any young child can grasp that particular step" or adult, for that matter, could "make an ass of you as they say."Here's something that can be safely assumed:Some can grow up with a culture in their own back yards of/in which they never/rarely really participate, appreciate, or understand. You may be one;you may not be.Just sticking up for it.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
atoz94 the technicalities of step dancing are negligable. This video was a cheap diversionary tactic by MacDonald and his cronies 2 deflect the issues that our province is facing. As for "nsmusicfan" you are arguing with views that obscured by partisanship. He so chooses to segregate Cape Breton into halves in one of his comments. Now that's real down home cultural spirit if I've ever seen it.
camt24 4 years ago
BTW cam24, my comments weren't meant to "segregate cape Breton into halves." I was pointing out that the majority of Galeic culture is found outside of post-industrial Cape Breton and have, as a cultural feature, different ways of accentually/verbally expressing themselves, generally speaking than that discussed earlier. Unity and respect with a sense of commonality through "islandness" remain strong. I really am sick of arguing with viewers who seem negative and bitter.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
oops. Meant Gaelic.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
It's condescending for you to accuse me of being bitter just because I criticized a maneuvre of a local politician and his cronies. I did not agree with this video or the comments that were pouring in so I decided to add my own which were in opposition to yours. I'm running out if ink. Adios.
camt24 4 years ago
Back shuffle back shuffle repeat tap tap is considered a "complicated artform" bahahahaha! I'll be sure tell my 5 year old neice who nailed it during her first lesson. I laughed more at that statement then this so called brave initiative.
atoz94 4 years ago 2

Oops! Try again. Silly really, on a wordly spectrum of things.
boucherwhite 4 years ago 2

This vid in response to Ellen Page's appearance on Letterman, she talked about being from Lockport, now living in Halifax . If you saw the interview, she spoke to Dave about coming to Hfx. In response, our Premier made this video with reference to Dave's usual Top Ten List. I think it was very clever and for you guys, you take yourselves waaaayyy too seriously and good luck out West!we are doing fine here without YA'LL
snifflour 4 years ago
When you are referring to people "OUT WEST" your comments encompass about 75% of the population of Nova Scotia. If we haven't moved there permanently, we are back and forth, hoping something will fly back here but it never happens. Also, a very high percentage of us who havent migrated, have offspring out there. Don't spit up in the air, it might come back down on your nose.

His positive attempts may.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
My tourism comment is in response to camt24 and their unconstructive, negative comments with no alternatives seen throughout.Good to see most posting enjoy the vid and think it is positive for NS!
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
I hope nobody expected this to fly without negative criticism. Speaking of constructiveness, perhaps the NS government could come up with something more enticing than this stupid video to impress the rest of the world.
mactcampbell 4 years ago
Over 25 000 views. I don't deem that as being stupid. I call it an advertising success. Sometimes you have to do things differently to "impress" in an increasingly instant gratification pop-culture-oriented world.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
Good post mtcampbell. Time will tell whether or not this was a success. If there is no increase in tourism this summer, then it can be deemed to a dud. Even if Dave Letteman comes to NS, it won't mean diddly squat to me or you. I still have to head 3,000 miles to the westward to work. Can't even come close to paying the bills on tourism wages, already tried it.
camt24 4 years ago
nice comment.
Roadblock1080 4 years ago
I agree about doing things differently sometimes but what's so different about this? The 10 Top List has been used to death for over 2 DECADES!! In this era ppl travel to experience real culture, not b/c of pop culture promos, unless they are not able to think for themselves. Americans preferred traveling to NS when our $ was significantly lower then the USD. While the our $ remains strong tourism from the US will continue to drop, can't blame them.
Brasdor821 4 years ago 2
Brasdor 821:The top ten list has not, however, been used by a politician to promote his /her province. Therefore,it is a different approach.Cape breton fiddling and stepdancing is real Gaelic culture, revealed in the promo.I already mentioned the equal dollar problem.Nobody from Central to Western CB say "'by". BTW, tasteless comment.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
This reeks of cheese & lame sexual innuendos. The fact that he's a provincial leader doesn't make it intriguing. Did you notice Peter Mansbridge seemed to have a hard time keeping straight face when reporting this story on the National? I doubt it was b/c of the jokes. As someone who celebrates traditional music & dance all I could think was "no he didn't" after watching the 5 sec fiddle/gig at the end, not as great a revelation as you think. BTW NS celebrates many cultures.
Brasdor821 4 years ago
Bd821:The fact that he's a prov. leader using youtube may not intrigue you but it's still a different approach; that was the arg. Re:Mansbridge--a light-hearted report on a fun promo by a leader.I celebrate trad. music and dance as well.If only for a few secs.I'm glad to see a true purveyor promote it instead of usual past "tartan wielders" in promotion who don't know their history.Yes, NS celebrates many cultures and does so by supporting the show"Drum" for instance.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
With CB being noted as a top destination in many resent publications and him wanting Letterman to come to Hfx there are many issues to be addressed or these publications will soon be printing negative feedback which no one wants. Most "tartan wielders" play bagpipes. One fiddler comes to mind, Ashley. You think because Rodney's wearing a suit it classes it up? Slainte Mhath
Brasdor821 4 years ago 3
Drum was just one example of other culture promotion.Your "stereotypical" "hillbilly" fiddler performs 2 complicated artforms in this vid that many (usually those who label them as so) cannot perform. You missed my point on tartan wielders:Ignorant tourism and bus.promoters of Victorianesque tartan-kilted Scottishness that's foreign to the Gaelic ancestors who came to NE NS and CB.Rodney and Ashley:True artform purveyors.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
I hear 'by used all over the island, and fr some on the mainland also. Perhaps you're too busy listening to yourself talk to notice. When I worked in the NS tourism industry many American travelers I encountered complained of the high taxes, lack of shopping & facilities in rural areas (duh), poor accommodations by their standards, terrible road conditions and many even compared NS to a 3rd world county, but the scenery is lovely. I hope Letterman brings his magic wand with him.
Brasdor821 4 years ago 3
*country* not county
Brasdor821 4 years ago
No,'bye is not used all over the island.Only when you get across the Seal Island Bridge and into the cultural melting pot of post-industrial CB.Most Central and Western Cape Bretoners, the majority of whom are of Gaelic descent don't like to be included in the stereotypical How's she goin' by? accent that's come to dominate the Canadian consciousness. The negatives you mention aren't MacDonald's fault. They're the result of the region's political economy dilemma since confederation.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
I know it is stereotypical which is why I used it,just as stereotypical as the hillbilly fiddler portrayed in this vid. I didn't say EVERYONE in CB uses it and certainly not EVERY person in Ind CB does. That my dear was stereotypical. Fiddle/dance were prominent in my household but there are many OTHER cultures which make up NS today. Cross the Causeway much or just to see Drum once a year? I didn't say the negatives were his fault but as premier isn't he responsible now?
Brasdor821 4 years ago 3

They haven't been looking after the business at hand like Rodney MacDonald is doing now as he sucks up to Stephen Harper.
camt24 4 years ago
cam24:Phrases like "business at hand","issues at hand" and politicians "stuffing their pockets" can be depicted as bitter rhetoric.Advanced courses with papers on Atlantic Canadian political economy gave me more vast reasons for economic disparity involving past policy-making and business-political decisions before Rodney MacDonald, favouring Central Canadian interests since confederation. Representation by population voting without limits has much to do with this as well.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
I'm fully aware of all of your points and in agreement with some of them. They are contributing factors, however, this still doesn't justify the inaction trends by our local policians over many decades. The fact remains that there is only one politician in Atlantic Canada that ever took a stand against these issues and we all know who that is. It's also a fact that he's not getting much support from his "comrades" in the region.

IllumiKnotty 4 years ago 2
IllimiKnotty, perhaps "fickle" was a bad choice of words and I should retract that statement. I saw this clip as promo for NS. Is he trying to regain some popularity? With his track record being what it has been to date, maybe he is. The majority of comments on this clip were targeting Mr. MacDonald's job performance and personal character, instead of commenting on the clip itself. So having said that, if you put aside "who" is in the video, what do you think of the content?
x95ujk 4 years ago
I would love to see a political figure...or any Nova Scotian, for that matter, promoting the gorgeous province that is our beloved Nova Scotia...and will stay tuned for that to happen ; ) The content in that video was of a level that any drunk at a bar could have come up with.

I'm not embarrassed, I'm pissed off. I'm pissed off because our premier is spending time on this idiocy instead of dealing with the issues at hand in our province. Why the emphasis on attracting tourists when our own people are leaving in droves. Perhaps we could have Oprah come down and coddle him during the next election campaign too.
camt24 4 years ago
One of the issues at hand is improving the economy.New ways to promote tourism is one mode, done here.Outmigration has been chronic in NS since the 1870s. Not MacDonald's fault. The Come Home campaign was ridiculed yet complaints about losing people? The Premier's Atlantic Gateway initiative is certainlt a valient attempt to keep people here. Some ideas instead of personal and political attacks would help here.
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
I meant "certainly" and "valiant."
nsmusicfan 4 years ago
Are we talking about the same tourism industry here? I mean the part time minimum wage one.
camt24 4 years ago
If I did have solutions for our economy, that would make me an economics expert. That should just a pretty heavy consultant's fee. Why would I publish it on youtube. Besides I'm too busy trying to secure work 3,000 miles to the westward.
camt24 4 years ago
This video is almost as funny as the Atlantic Accord fiasco. It's just as funny as the campaign to get people to return home to live and work in Nova Scotia. It's about as funny as the Sunday Shopping/Stat Holiday flip-flop. I'm sure David Letterman can solve a lot of our problems with the province being in the delapidated state that it is. Ha f---ing ha.
camt24 4 years ago

IllumiKnotty, you are absolutely correct.

Rodney MacDonald is better at cheating on his wife than making stupid videos.

Nova Scotia, it is time that we start having a bit more pride in our great province. This is a province that at one time was so wealthy, we were greatly sought after to enter into confederation. What would the rest of Canada think about this stereotypical display of Atlantic/Backwaterness. Who is David Letterman, that we must loose our minds the moment the province is mentioned on American Primetime ?
lukey9 4 years ago 6
Exactly. Letterman proably forgot he said something about visiting Nova Scotia 2 seconds after he said it. Are we that desperate? It sure looks like it.

All I have to say is...That's the coolest thing a Premier has done in my opinion. I would pay good money to see Dalton McGinty do that. This has inspired me to want to visit NS.
canjasper 4 years ago 2
Haha! I agree that is far less dorky than I'd feared it would be. Now if Rodney can only pave my d*mn road we'll really be cooking.
bluenoserboy 4 years ago 2
I think this is great. He is a young premier, he gets it, good on you Rodney!
eagleeyegal 4 years ago
I thought this would be dorky when I heard about it on the news, but it was way funnier that I expected - and, I might add, way funnier than many of Dave's.
glenfarrelly1 4 years ago
Even if Dave does not come, it's still a good publicity for the rest of Canada. I'm sure it will attract a lot of tourists. They air reports all across the country, so that's like free publicity!
