What a fun trip you had! Our family is thinking of biking via the same route. How long did it take you to finish the journey? Is the scenery beautiful other than the adventure?
Hi, Melk to Krems is enjoyable because it is mostly going downhill along the Danube, no need a lot of effort.
Journey is about half day, can be combined with a visit to Melk Abbey, a heritage site. Walk down to the river at the edge of town to find bicycle rental. The scenery is not dramatic - just pleasant. You will see the Danube River, castle Schonbuhel, vineyards, fruit orchards and pretty little town like Durnstein. Visit etaustria.blogspot.com/search/label/Melk for more info.

Just a little caution - the rented bicycles have hard seats!
