  • Holy Shit.

  • where's the love button?

  • Oh. So that's how you use a high hat.

  • @1:40 mann i would've been screamin my lungs out after a lick like that

  • is this where john bonham got his solo idea from ?

  • sembra lorenz

  • Comment removed

  • He really enjoys it. As much as we do.

  • When I was about 14 I first started getting into playing music my grandmother as Christmas gift got me this VHS tape DCI sample reel with clips from what must of been nearly every DCI video out at the time. I knew very little about music at the time and hadn't even heard of any the guys on this tape. But this performance was on there and I remember this one was one of my favorite clips on the whole tape. Not even the Weckl or Bozzio clips captivated me like this one.

  • the pure essence of that solo is musicality.........

  • @davisismail1comcast HI BILLY MAYS HERE TELLING YOU TO turn off caps lock.

  • the first time i heard this solo i thought it was lame.

but now i recognize the genius. MAX ROACH <3

  • WOW ITS FUNNY HOW YOU STUMBLE UPON THINGS. THIS SOLO PIECE WAS USED IN A TRIBUTE DOCUMENTARY TO JOHNE HENRIKE CLARK, PIONEERING SCHOLAR IN AFRICANA HISTORY AND WAS NARRATED BY WESLEY SNIPES. WOW, NOW I CAN GO BRAGG AND SAY I KNOW WHO THE COMPOSITION IS FROM.

  • Man, if your were there when he done that. What a memory. What a Classic

  • amazing 5, amazing independence, amazing man

  • this is called "Having Style, being Tasteful and being MUSICAL"

  • omg Bonham must be influenced by this guy bonzos solo is kinda like this

  • COOL!!

  • everything is centered around the 1st beat, and it plays like a symphony, hes just feeling it, its quite remarkable.

  • Its great but I dont like it that way!

  • Master musician,true Drummer,an Artist...Max Roach <3

  • Starts off soo easy then it just goes sooo complex

  • Simpler times... just a drumer and his kit, you think he gave a damm rat about the wood from the shells or the oil in the tomheads?...

  • just awesome....

  • Well for me this artist is good but Buddy Rich is like the fouth of july fireworks. He leaves you in the state of awe.

  • MAX ROACH!!!!!

  • now where's the video where he's actually trying? this is the spreading of his awsome

  • Now that's what I call a fantastic drum solo!

  • SICKK

  • He makes the drums sing melodies. The motif that he starts with (0:09 and 0:16) and ends with (2:30 - 2:55) and keeps coming back to throughout is so infectious. He's a genius drummer.

  • 10 people accidentally shoved a corn-cob in their ass and are upset about it.

  • 2:20

    hi hat ninja

  • STOP CLAPPING BITCH! I want to here Max.

  • metto la sbatta sul camino, mi ci cuocio 8 wuberoni e poi mi ammazzo!

  • I defiantly hear bonham in there.

  • @sebz661 You mean you hear roach in bonham

  • @vrdrums Yeah, that's what I meant.

  • you know, he did not try show us his technique.. like some others. He talk with us and i understand him

  • what the hell is he playing with HHfoot?

  • @musicosparacruceros He's playing a pattern in 5/4. Thats right, this whole thing is in 5. And thats why Moby Dick is only a cheap imitation. Bonham would never have been able to play all that stuff in 5/4.

  • This must be the embryo for John bonhams Moby Dick

  • @barryrrab Very obviously, at that. You can tell a lot of derivitives on the 1970 Royal Albert Hall performance, which are taken from this solo.

  • I love how he plays the Hi-Hat =)

  • anyone know what dvd or show this is from?

  • What the the hell was that black magic going on with the high hat?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • You can see that he's not hearing the music, he's feeling it.

  • 2:10!!!!

  • I realy get the impression that this guy got worse and worse over the years. He may never have been an excessively technical drummer but his solos way back were really musical, complex, and interesting. It seems to me like in this video, he could have done practically anything, however mediocre, and the audience would have been thrilled to see him do it. He even loses the 5/4 he's got going like two or three times. I really hope one day I'll be able to see what there is to appreciate in here....

  • @brentmb i don't wear panties, nor do i have tits. even if you add "as we know him" it's still an unsubstantiated claim. if it's only the internet, in other words insignificant, why'd you respond?

  • Math for the ears--that's what this is. Impeccable timing.

  • Master of timing!

  • how in the name of christ could he keep his feet in 5/4, jazz musicians, gotta love em.

  • @MrElfro89 isn't it 5/8 ?

  • @julianisdope sure, there isn't any right or wrong answer, the only difference being how it's notated. Could even be written as 5/16. The reason why I chose 5/4 is because most be-bop jazz pieces are notated at tempos of about 180+ bpm. The reason for this is because its easier to sight read semi-quavers, then demisemi-quavers at half the tempo.

  • Chungiemunchin,

Actually, the bass speeds up a little at 2:24, but he comes right back (correct tempo) after a few measures.

Not enough error to bring him down from Mt. Olympus, though ;)

    SERIOUS FEELING!

  • Fucking 5/4 solos, how do they work?

  • There would also be no Bill Bruford without Roach

  • @BrentMB79 there wouldn't be any drummers at all without Max Roach. No one else after the day he was born would have ever played the drums if he hadn't been born. All music today would be made by drum machines. But then again, would any drum machines exist either? That statement is and has always been ridiculous. "There wouldn't be this person or group of people, if it weren't for this person or group of people" Absolute rhetoric.

  • @1by1illknockuout Dont get your pantys in a bunch sweet tits, its only the internet. Would you have felt better if I said "Their would be no Bill Bruford "as we know him" with you Max Roach".

  • i didn't know that Obama is playing drums !

  • Pattern doesn't change in the bass drum. Only changes in the hi hat when he plays both sticks on the hi hat. Otherwise, that bass drum and hi hat pattern are solid and don't veer while he plays all that other stuff on the shells. What a great example of independence between limbs.

  • Why is the first suggestion on every drumming vid an expertvillage video?

  • This is mature drumming, and one of the best examples of it too!

  • Such texture and musical conception.... Max Roach is one of the more «musical» drummers...I actually feel a song or some structure like that comming from the solo...an intro, a climax, an outro....simply genius....

  • hihats: 14"top 15" botton?

  • @XASxxxxxxxxxxxx i dunno, i think its the angle of the hats.

  • How can people argue on this video? Aren't you guys listening to this kick ass beat?

  • @thehardcoreguitarist nobody ever does. they come online to shit talk and pretend they have half a clue. bottom line, is max roach is one of the best drummers ever ever, and anybody who plays modern music especially drums, owes a lot to folks like him. what a great solo! he has some SERIOUS feeling. and FEELING > TECHNIQUE

  • there would be no bonham without roach

  • @imakery precisely, and then there would be no danny carey without bonham....

  • @imakery mitch mitchell destroys every thing bonfag ever has done

  • @damphear2 when did i ever mention Mitch Mitchell?

  • @imakery u mean without any roach there would be no bonham

  • @sheysway123 thats what i said...

  • @sheysway123 Hahaha. I agree.

  • @imakery exactly!!! bonham was a huge roach fan that's what helped his playing along with his vision

  • Toms 1 and 2 are tune to close to each other.

  • Everybody feel free to ignore shadeofclear. He claims to have played guitar for 13 years but the best he can muster on his youtube channel are emo songs by Brand New and Boys Like Girls and a couple of goo goo dolls songs. Come back and make comments when you start listening to legitimate music that is made with emotion rather than as a product to be sold to 14 year old girls.

  • Damn, how'd he do that with the feet, along with everything else?!?

  • @hotdrumchick He's pretty much Legend. That's all there is to it. :)

  • @CJRaaa No doubt!

  • seriously @beats1969 if you could play that good then you would be the guy in videos like this..... just because you can play better than what he's playing doesn't mean that he can't. max is just a straight up bad ass and you clearly have no life if you spend that much time trying to take down great drummers of all time with your pathetic ego....

  • one thing about being a musician is being humble and accepting of other styles whether you percieve them as "good" or not. max roach had alot to do with the development of jazz drumming and technique. i'd like to see anyone do that foot ostinato and do a 16th note single roll, let alone the things he's doing.

  • OBAMA FOR THE LOSE

  • @charlesisgayerthanyo

lol he might as well have upside down buckets for toms!

  • this is too complex!

  • Max Roach is thinking while playing: "Watch me do this with my eyes closed, it's pretty difficult and I want to make it harder."

    Brilliant!

  • So elegant so complex

  • Does anybody know which cymbals is he using?

  • @martinlentini Classic AVEDIS ZILDJIAN

  • almost the same sound as john bonham, interesting......:P

  • hi hat action awesome niiiice.

  • Max Roach is Terry Bozzio's drumming grandfather

  • search: Amorphic drum ...( 1st video result ).

    what technique is this??

  • That guy has some class.

  • best hit on hi-hat ever!!

  • telling a story with drums, like Roach did, its' just amazing

  • @charlesisgayerthanyo yeah bad as in awesome

  • I love how his hi-hat and bass drum are keeping beat the whole time.

  • @skateforzero357 yes its called an Ostinato, its keeping the same pattern either on feet or hands, works either ways. just so you know. gooday

  • its guys like max that make me want to give up drumming. Either that or makes me what to lock myself in my drum room and practice for 3 years straight.

  • i have the same drum set (of course, old drum set...). is anybody interested ?

  • This nigger sucks.

  • @TopTenCrew you guys are cute..like 10 year olds

  • @TopTenCrew i hope you're kidding.. if you aren't , you have to be the stupidist human being on the planet , and know squat about drumming..and you're racial slur only adds fuel to your ignorant fire you stupid, moronic fuck !! countless rock drummers and jazz drummers and drummers from almost every walk of life have been influenced by this legend whether they know it or not..your malice and rotten nature only preceeds the fact the you're just below the human level of thinking.! now.. fuck off !

  • @blica1

I wasn't being serious. Calm down.

  • @TopTenCrew ok then...you just seemed a little out of it,,what with your remarks and ignorance and all..but if you were just kidding then it's cool..but i suggest you dont fuck around like that anymore, as people like me will take it seriously !. you never know who's reading or paying attention !.but its all cool..so no hard feeling s and all !! PEACE !

  • the main riff is like bonham's moby dick live

  • no you sillyheads, obama looks like HIM! haha I'm preeetty sure Max Roach is bit older than Barack... ;)

  • wait a minute, this is the original phrasing that are used by Bonzo in his legendary "moby dick" solo, am I wrong?

  • @bradiporitmico The second I heard this, that was exactly what I thought. No surprise, though. Bonham studied these jazz greats like textbooks.

  • I think this guy must have an extra brain.

  • Max Roach is like the black John Bonham

or is John Bonham like the white Max Roach

    thats a great question

    hmmmmm.....

  • @sihbjw - id go with the latter since john bonham grew up idolizing guys like max and tony williams.

  • THE PRESIDENT CAN DO EVERYTHING...HE THE MAN....NO REALLY max IS ONE OF THE GREATS

  • BOORRRRRRRRIIIIIIIINNNNNNG sounds like alot of NOT playing lol OBAMA!!!!! YOU SUCK

  • @shadeofclear then lets see you play a perfect 5/4 ostinato (if you even know that that means) and write a MELODY and then SOLO on top of it without losing your place. oh wait you can't? ... thats what i thought.

  • @shadeofclear go to bed little boy ! i saw the crap you have posted ! your taste is about as advanced as a 12 year old . you're 25 ....l'il one . max played and taught until the day he died . i can tell you're gonna get a haircut soon and try to leave mommy and daddy's house and deliver pizza . but , hey ! you just might be the best pizza delivery driver ....ever !

  • @beats1969

lol obviously i'm not 25 retard. and i love how douchebags like you always try to talk about people like you know everything about them lol how bout ill give you some information then you can maybe talk about something you actually know something about, retard. ive been playing drums for 12 years. i make 850 a week as a salesman for a logistics company. i drive a 43,000 car with 436 horsepower and i for one, let alone everyone that i know, would mop the floor with this guy on drums

  • @shadeofclear Dude, no one cares. You can drive a porsche and get laid every day for all I care, you're still on youtube throwing a tantrum like an spoiled twelve year old.

  • @hedgehogrider

haha and you can be some retard user named hedgehogrider that's replying back to a message that i sent you.... oh wait.. i wasn't talking to you... what the fuck are you talking to me for? lol Do you even play anything? are you skilled in anything? ... sorry... your message is irrelevant ... stay retarded douchebag

  • @shadeofclear you sir are fucking retarded. max roach INVENTED modern drumming. none of your "12 years" of experience would mean shit without max roach, plain and simple. no opinions, just an undisputable fact.

  • @beats1969 i saw your youtube . all the bands you have up there are crap ! i'm sorry you don't make that much money and are in debt up to your eye's (i didn't say ears because it's obvious you have such bad taste .) as far as floor mopping goes ,well, RETARD (big word ) there would be no floor to mop if it wasn't for max ! get to know your history , and respect the elder's . you just come across as an idiot !!

  • @beats1969

you would look through my channel lol loser and what makes you think thats the only music i listen to lol again assuming shit you have no clue about lol RETARD ahaaa i listen to everything dude, and in debt? lol sorry fag, i know how to handle my money (obviously) otherwise i wouldnt have that car at my age sorry not everyones in debt like you... maybe you should get a new job and stop maxing out your credit card lol

  • @beats1969

and as far as max nobody up there playing all but nothing on the drums, yeah dude i would mop the floor with his ass. like i said .. 12 years playing drums ( let alone the 13 of piano and guitar ) and no pussy footing around like max boring and this guy has no place in history of drums dude listen to him? lol fuckin lars would beat him in a drum off LOL ahh god thats horrible! Go listen to some real drummers with technique that tear shit up behind the kit RETARD hahaaaa

  • @shadeofclear do you know any words that have more than one syllable ? do you have thumbs ? go read a book , you empty headed ,mushbrain !! retard and fag in the same comments box , i feel sorry for you ! you hateful little ted bundy !

  • he kind of looks like obama!

  • i like how he always thinks his moves, he knows what hes doing... he has a special and unique way of playing

  • Your right Undertaker I'm trying to go from rock to jazz and it is not easy

  • @huwbean: yes but john bonhams ostinato wasnt in 5/4

  • @RusVon Don't rip him because you don't like the genre he plays. That's like saying Michael Jordan is bad because you don't like basketball.

  • he was working over that hi-hat like it had dissed his moms lol WOW

  • Has anybody else noticed that this ostinato is just like the one Bonham plays in Moby Dick at the Royal Albert Hall Recording?

    Whats the date of this?

  • @huwbean I think this recording is late 70s but the thing he is doing is a take on an older thing of his, called "the drum also waltzes". It's the thing Bonham did early on in Moby Dick, but Roach did it first.

  • I didn't know Obama could play ;) Max is the boss!

  • i cried when i saw this for the first time

  • he sure was one well dressed drummer

  • @machoTit--- Dressing like you were ready for serious business was the norm in his day.

  • @RusVon I understand what you are saying, but I have to think the four years you spent in a jazz band didnt hurt in you becoming a good prog drummer!! Peace

  • Some of you are way too funny. I don't care who he is either. All I know is he EATS those high hats at 2:20 like a MAD DOG ON A MEAT WAGON!

  • @RusVon

Don't get it twisted though, I like all genres of music. And no hard feelings.

  • @RusVon

Dirty? Hahaha okay then. And who was talking about fancy suits? I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Jazz musicians are some of the greatest musicians ever, and it has nothing to do with fucking suits or The Beatles. So please, stop trying to undervalue the influence of Jazz because you don't like it. Nobody said you have to like it. But it's hard to take a music fan/musician seriously if he hates the legends.

  • @RusVon

And what way is that...? The high-hat is on 2 and 4, buddy, if you can't tell that maybe you shouldn't be criticizing jazz music.

  • @RusVon is it possible that you don't understand what he is doing in his solos?

  • so simple yet so complex and musical at the same time.

  • i tried the thing at 2:05 and i prettymuch tore off some of the skin on my knuckles. :(

  • @RusVon The Beatles suck?! and Max Roach?! you have some bad fucking taste man.

  • Hey buddy, I'm not just a jazz drummer. The funny thing is that Max Roach was the MOST progressive drummer of his time. He won't be forgotton. Take your Pearts, Portnoy's, Copelands, and all the other overrated guys and they don't hold a fart in the wind to this guy in the course of history. If you haven't studied jazz, funk, or latin....you're just a rock drummer with a few flashy licks. If you call that progressive, I'll eat my hat.

  • This is just one solo. A Buddy Rich solo tiresome to watch? Prog...Boring is Portnoy or Copeland after 1 minute. There is a lifetime of learning from these players. Everything is related friend and the sooner you learn that and other styles of drumming, the sooner you'll truly be able to call your drumming "progressive".

  • Don't those six ply Ludwigs sound great!

  • is he doing an ostinato in 5/8??

  • @protobuster lol, you ask only because you know you're right, good ears lol

  • @protobuster yeap...one two - one two three

  • @protobuster I believe its 5/4

  • @protobuster could you maybe explain to me what an 'ostinato'is? please? :)

  • @jaleesamg An ostinato is a figure in music that is constantly repeated.

  • @ZackPomerleau thanks :)

  • @jaleesamg You bet man! Anytime!

  • 1.Buddy rich

    2.Gene krupa

    3.Elvin jones

    4.Max roach

    5.Tony williams

  • @ultimatefighter187 nice but your leaving out Jo Jo Mayer he is at least number 3 in my book. but for sure Buddy Rich is #1 lol

  • @ultimatefighter187

    no papa Jo?

  • @ultimatefighter187 ---never forget LOUIE BELLSON. Check out some of his YT vids if you need a reminder. I LOVE DRUMMING

  • Is the Paul referred to in the title Paul Desmond, as in the writer of Take Five?

  • i love this man :)

  • this video makes me smile :)

  • watching this reminds me why john bonham is the greatest rock drummer ever...when moby dick he combines the power of rock with the feel of jazz such as this...ah...max your a genius.

  • Wow...the way he colors and expresses every note is just enchanting. This is music.
