Excellent documentary. I agree with some posters that Max Schmeling isn't portrayed accurately. From all accounts, Schmeling was a gentleman and was very generous is assisting Joe Louis late in his life.
How Louis responded to the Schmeling loss is proof of his standing as an all-time great regardless of weight classification. For most fighters, a beating like that would mean the end, and by Louis' own admission he remembered nothing after round five. To come back, win the title, and defend it twenty-five times over twelve years? Incredible.
@TheJasonX: The top marginal tax rate was slightly over 90% for most of the years between 1942 and 1964. By far most of Louis' income was definitely in the top tax bracket, so the figure makes sense.
Its really sad how many boxers has such a hard life ! Not just Joe Louis but also Sonny Liston! I didn't really like Sonny but when I heard about his life and background, i had so much respect for him! Sad...
tapiaassian is a douche bag. try being black in a mouth foaming pre rights movment crowd fighting a rep of the nazi party, also it was well documented that he was way under trainned. don't be sucha hater.jack johnson was the best btw. watch unforgivable blackness which is the doc on j.j and shut ur mouth!
Sorry, not interested in excuses. And if you had read my comment, you'd have understood the context of what I was saying.EndlessLaymon was attempting to apply ridiculous logic to support his opinion.
yes, schmelling wasn't a racist. he was a victim of the nazi party. he helped louis out a great deal financially towards the end and yes helped with the funeral
Evidently the term "irony" is lost to you, otherwise you wouldn't be whining about others throwing insults when were the one who actually did so in the first place."Was Ali the fastest?" - Yes,in the eyes of many observers,he was.Certainly there was never a heavyweight who ever came closer to rivalling his level of foot speed.
And using your logic,if Louis was so great, why was he,not only beaten, but also dominated and knocked out by Schmeling in his prime?
This was wonderful. I wanted more information on Joe's tax problems and this was the remedy. What a mess and thankfully his wife resolved them. The irony with Coca Cola is tremendous and the company should be ashamed of itself. I had no idea about Joe's involvement with the PGA and the impact he had. Awesome!
this is weird, they're saying his funeral was free, I read that the "evil Nazi boy" Schmähling actually was a long time friend of Louis after the war and onwards, and that it was him who paid for Jou Louis funeral and helping Joe in other ways?!
@ibhof2 His funeral was paid for in part by former competitor and friend, Max Schmeling, who also acted as a pallbearer. from Wikipedia. I knew I was right. Which pisses me off when I just watched your The FIght louis-schmeling documentary some dipshit journalist in the end said "I dont think they were really friends, they barely knew one another"yeah right, someone who isnt your friend you dont pay for their funeral and be a pallbearer. idiot media assholes trying to tarnish schmeling's image!!
@k4n31985 u know, i think the media exaggerates max's role in "paying" for the funeral. cuz i've heard different sources say at least 4 different people "paid" for his funeral. like maybe he paid for part of it. but it wasn't like he needed a charity fund, that's the way people consistently want to portray it.
@JarrodFilmology Where's the exaggeration, dumbass? I even quoted the part where it says that he paid for it in part, not all of it. It doesn't matter. My point was that they're talking down on Schmeling in this documentary saying he wasn't a true friend, when clearly he was. If he weren't, I'm sure he wouldn't have had the honor of being a pallbearer, which is also said in my quote.
@AlexiusMoore I totally agree with you here, Alex. As a huge boxing fan, seeing all this "Ali ass kissing" really annoys me. He is a great boxer, one of the greats, just not the greatest. Everything he did in the ring was technically wrong. He had an iron chin and great endurance...but apart from that his skill is very questionable. The best heavyweight is Joe Louis in my mind and not Ali.
We can also say that Ali's constant mouth running was just trying to compensate for lack of skills. lol
@FLOOD504 This. And a lot of these fan boys have never even seen Ali fight. I will honestly put my hand up and say I haven't seen every Ali fight either (I wasn't even born yet in Ali's prime), but I have watched what was available on YouTube and elsewhere on the internet and I've seen Robinson fights. Robinson is better. Tyson is overrated too. Shavers was a MUCH harder hitter, so was Frazier. Tyson wasn't exactly in a strong HW era either, his best win was over a guy who beat the shadow of Ali
@EndlessLaymon Ali's skill was very questionable?? Wow. Ali patterned his style on Sugar Ray Robinson and was blessed with a lot of the athletic gifts like incredible hand and foot speed. He didn't have the best defence but when he was in his prime his reflexes compensated for that. He had amazing accuracy and could fight outside or on the ropes. Didn't work the body much but he could take a punch and dominated the greatest HW era. So get over yourself.
@bolder2009 Yawn. I've heard it all before. Was Ali the fastest = no. Was he the strongest = no. Did he have the best technique = no. Did he have an undefeated streak = no. If he is so great then why did he lose to Frazier in his prime?
You may like Ali's dick but myself and others don't. You like parrot talk don't you? Ali says he is the greatest over and over again [when he is still participating in his own career] and naive people start to believe it. lol. Do yourself a favor and be quiet.
@bolder2009 Wow, you're totally incapable of debating aren't you. It's only because my points are valid. So instead of just jumping to insults - the last resort of a person who has no defensive counter-argument - maybe you should grow up
@bolder2009 Louis was nearly as fast, maybe just as fast as Ali. Louis had more power, better defence and he was more efficient, no bouncing around wasting energy. Louis would have given Ali trouble. The only way Ali would have won against Louis was to jab and run. Toe to toe Louis would have knocked Ali out in the later rounds
Fuck america!!!
Dey shit on louis after all he done

@tapiaassasin A Schmeling who was already well into his late 30s if not early 40s, I might add.
