LMAO ... How exactly is this one guy getting owned by another? Chopra used 'metaphorized' lingo and Leonard, being a trained physicist felt irked. Simple as that! Dumbfucks in the 'top comments' section really need to get this thing called 'life'.
It's funny how Leonard says "I'm a theoretical physicist (not a quantum physicist), so I could comment on the 'God question' with Stephen Hawking"
Since when does being a theoretical physicist have any special qualification to talk about questions about God? He "could" comment but so could anyone else. The same applies to the charming Stephen Hawking, while he's a very popular physicist, it doesn't make him the ultimate in philosophy and theology. Also Leonard seemed to be name-dropping a bit.
@tubebooboob prior to that moment Deepak had claimed that Hawking believed in God, when actually he does not. Mlodinow was referring to that, and was going to confirm (I assume) that Hawking is not religious. the whole debate is on youtube so you can find it in there. He did not mean to imply that he was a theologian or anything like that, but i can see how you saw it that way.
@tubebooboob Do you? I was merely stating the fact that theoretical physicists probably know a little more about quantum mechanics than fucking medical doctors.
@0122460166 Bullsh*t. You called the guy "an arrogant prick"... and the fact is, that even theoretical physicists disagree about quantum mechanics, so it goes to show that you're the on being "an arrogant prick." Nice try to save face though. :)
"I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics." - Richard Feynman, in The Character of Physical Law (1965)
@tubebooboob When they say that no one understands quantum mechanics, it just means that it's not intuitive at all. Physicists can predict QM mathematicaly very precisely.
Nothing is arrogant about saying that a theoretical physicist knows more about QM than an M.D. But it is arrogant for an M.D to challenge a theoretical physicist about quantum mechanics, that's all I'm saying.
The "prick" part was just for robbing people of their cash by using big words no one understands...
@0122460166 Give it up already... and btw I didnt ask you to explain the quote. Furthermore, he didnt rob shit, it is called the free market; if you want to write bestsellers, go try. @leej70 They are all trying to make money. Open YOUR eyes. Furthermore if anyone is seeking money and politics over truth it is Sam Harris who is doing the opposite of trying to help you, even though he tries to act as if he is.
@pastafarianprophet According to Princeton University and Oxford Dictionary, (in context) to "believe in" means roughly: "Do you "have faith in the truth or existence of the infinite, have the opinion that the infinite is right or acceptable, have confidence in the infinite, and/or have a firm conviction as to the goodness of the infinite?"
Oxford Dictionaries states: "the infinite" is defined as "God" and/or "a space or quantity that is infinite"
@pastafarianprophet To put it another way in context of the question, to "believe in the infinite" roughly means:
Do you: have faith in the truth or existence of God or a space or quantity that is infinite or both, have the opinion that God or a space or quantity that is infinite or both are or is right or acceptable, have confidence in God or a space or quantity that is infinite or both, and/or have a firm conviction as to the goodness of God or a space or quantity that is infinite or both?
We cannot say who is right and who is wrong. Both opinions, that of Mlodinow and Chopra, have exactly the same degree of truthfulness. All statements are completely relative.
@outsidemendham The thing about Chopra is that he does not disregard science he is more knowledgeable in science than most of his critics.Him and Leonard made a book together and they are friends. Some people who comment on these videos are just completely narrow minded and disregard anything Chopra says unlike some of his well know scientist friends who he has discussions with.He is friends with top level scientists.
What I said has nothing to do with it. Even in Chopra were a two day old infant and could speak or lived in Ethopia and had never heard of the scientific method, his opinion on science would be as valid and true than that of Mlodinow.
The frustrating part about Chopra is that he comes across as being a caring, sincere, loveable guy. I know people in my personal life who admire him. They’ve been fooled, because he's a nonsense-spouting, money-grabbing charlatan. If you actually examine what he says, it's easily exposed as stupendously hollow gibberish. It’s just simply garbage and bullshit.
@outsidemendham I mostly just mean a cultural attitude, a kind of chauvinism. Mlodinow is stubbornly guarded against using the concept of infinity outside of specific uses in mathematics, and responds to metaphorical and interpretive uses of ideas from QM with a kind of pedantic insistence on "correct usage." The responsibility is on Chopra to learn what Mlodinow means by "superposition," etc., but he doesn't seem to feel a reciprocal responsibility to understand what Chopra is saying. (Cont.)
@ContraPoints Of course, I have very serious doubts about Chopra's intellectual honesty, and I do think he throws around Quantum terms in a way that is deceptively only half-metaphorical. But it's Mlodinow's insistence on exclusively analytic, mathematical, and "correct" thinking, and feigned or real inability to engage in more interpretive thought (you get the idea that he won't say "consciousness" until it's defined mathematically) that gives him the appearance of what I'm calling scientism.
I'm not even sure there is a concrete definition of "scientism". I've heard the term flung around for things as minor as "Science is useful" to "Science is the only form of knowledge" or what not.
So I'm not really understanding why you applied the term.
That's not Leonard Mlodinow. That is Jeff Goldblum! Please correct the description. I would recognize that scruffy beard and that choppy speech anywhere.
Would recommend that Leonard Mlodinow ignore this clown. You can't have a reasoned conversation with someone who uses words like 'superposition of possibilities' without understanding. It's like that game people play to make grammatically correct sentences that hold no meaning.
War of the Worldviews: Science Vs. Spirituality - is the book written by these to men as a result of this encounter. I am reading it right now and it isn't bad. I am a skeptic and atheist but I do understand to some extent what Deepak (and all "spiritualists") are trying to convey. I must admit however, that the only reason I can relate is because of the same reason Deepak holds his convictions - LSD lol
Deepak's definition of consciousness: a superposition of possibilities. If he's still borrowing from Quantum Physics then I think he means that consciousness exists in all states but measures as only one. Helpful? Reminds me of Caroline Myss' work, borrowing from Carl Jung but adding a little spiritual channeling for extra spice. Plenty of potential for supplementary books, courses, and appearances on Oprah.
Please, instead of dismissing him as a fraud, for his, mine, your, and everyone else's sake, explain why, or correct what he says. Its very easy and tempting to even me to dismiss him as a fraud because I do not understand him, but this is not sufficient. I feel the same when I hear Einstein and others make immensely complicated statements about quantum physics etc. but it is dishonest to dismiss them as frauds too. Share your wisdom, prove him wrong, as this man tried to, and apparently failed?
@01110110010110110101 IT IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO CALL BULLSHIT ON WHAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND. MOST LANGUAGES OF THE WORLD APPEAR AS ''GIBBERISH'' TO ME, DO YOU UNDERSTAND MY POINT? ARROGANT FOOLS.
yeah i think hes a crackpot. but also sympathised that by accident his last comment was misconstrued by poor choice of words. fun vid though! thanks for sharing
@cunnidvd < I thought similar words have been used against Galileo 400yrs ago by the church; may be you'll apologize Deepak within a year.
Consciousness entangles like subatomic particle and waves so quantum physics is applicable but there are also other dimensions involved in the process of mind's perception.
Mlodinow is more interested in promoting his book :)
"Consciousness entangles like subatomic particle and waves so quantum physics is applicable but there are also other dimensions involved in the process of mind's perception."
LOL.. that is wrong on so many levels. It sounds like post-modern babble and amounts to NOTHING of substance
I've seen a lot of physicists getting back on the "non-local" thing. Deepak only says that our consciousness is non-local. And it has to be from my own point. John Eccles won the 1963 Nobel in neurophysics and he explained in his book that our physical world is just a quantum soup and that it's our counsciousness that experience it as reality. Anyways, it's up to everybody to make up their minds. Both men are brilliant IMO.
The physicist seemed a bit defensive to me. Every time Deepak tried to talk to him honestly he responded with sarcasm. Maybe lighten up a bit. I think Deepak did a good job, especially being in a room full of skeptics.
It's interesting that this encounter progressed to a book by those two cooperating ...
More and more people will be realizing that it's impossible to see or experience something that we don't believe .... in other words, we're gods in formation .....
Deepak Chopra is such a disgrace. His misuse and abuse of the jargon from QM only serves to misinform the public and encourage superstition and pseudoscientific beliefs.
@Alineniz < I know, if you're Cambridge professor of Queen's English, word consciousness would be erased from the dictionary.
How dare common people talk about this "non-mainstream" concept, go back to your coal mine, or off with your head ! Charlieee...ee, we need to change TV programming again ... go bring Murdoch :) YOU'RE A POMPOUS ASS, in her majesty's service.
@Zeno1999 ...er, no. It is the fact that this dude isactually belittling average people by using esoteric concepts. He's insulting to me, another commoner :-)
@Alineniz < Actually, it is the opposite. DC is empowering people to participate in creating a better society.
"esoteric concepts" Nothing esoteric about what he is talking about; yes, this sort of thing in not in school\Univ. curriculum. But if we do teach this early, we would have a much better society eg. drug problems, too many prisoners, overspending on unnecessary things, nurturing crisis in care of children etc etc
"He's insulting to me" You don't sound like a commoner, I bow.
@Zeno1999 : i grew up in a third world country... I am a commoner among the commoners. Mysticism is not what makes society better. Better knowledge of the physical world is. But, no need to continue a conversation that is not going anywhere. And no need to bow...Have a great day/night.
@Alineniz < Actually, it is the opposite. DC is empowering people to participate in creating a better society.

This is how the world works. You can just learn some buzzwords ("quantum", "non-local", "superposition" etc) and then rattle them out in any particular order that sounds convincing and there'll be few people listening who could tell the difference. The physicist knows Chopra is bullshitting, but the audience doesn't. The "audience" may be the book-buying or TV-watching public, or they may be deciding foreign policy.
@parlezuml before calling out Deepak chopra is misusing quantum jargon, we need to understand that spiritualist way of defining, explaining and perceiving things is different from a pure scientific methods by putting into equations. In a world where scientists are still struggling to define how the big bang occurred or what was before that, we need to give a fair chance to other spiritual/philosophical thinkers their to put forth point of views as well.
@Relativisticism WRONG! douche bag is an finite object and is closed by a material hence limited in time and space. Deepak douchery is non local, got it?!?
However metaphysically complex the world may be, Chopra is a leech who sucks everything worth getting out of the superstitious, just like a REAL leech sucks REAL blood. You can complicate it as much as you want but a parasite is a parasite. I love how he talks about quantum physics and people take him seriously when he's talking to a quantum physicist. For those have have agreed with me to this point, jump ship: let's make an IQ-based license to breed & shove bayonets in stupid peoples faces.
and HE'S a QUANTUM physicist!? he does not understand SIMPLE questions such as "do you believe in the infinite" YET he says "yes we use infinity A LOT" lol HE is working with a man who has THE HIGHEST IQ that we know of in the world!? who made him a physicist let alone a QUANTUM physicist? haha the only thing QUANTUM is his brain.. VERY OBVIOUSLY:)
@TheSyrupMan lol some of us are actually trying to learn. not troll because some people have no lives:) well congrats to the ones who have no lives! I shouldve known better than to come on youtube and state an opinion where people are animals and have no humane skills.
@babieprincesslove5 I don't really know how to reply to that. They should make a "Replying to Stupid comments for Dummies" book. Then I could use the skills I learned for occasions like this.
@DR000 lol im not the dumb*** commenting on someone elses opinion and thinking im so smart bc I called someone a dumb*** so I could make myself feel smart. its no wonder youre on the so called physicists side. youre OBVIOUSLY rude too. I stated an opinion and youre the uneducated one cursing when you have no class or any type of respectful debate skills.lol Deepak Chopra stayed respectful and answered questions in a very courteous manner.& for the people who are of no class WILL REPLY TO THIS:)
Your opinion is silly. Deepak had to stay courteous because he had to seduce the audience with his bullshit. Go listen to his response, and try to tell me that it wasn't nonsensical rubbish.
LOL QUANTUM LOCAL FLUCTUATION ENTANGLEMENT BRO HERP DERP
Chopra is good...He compliments Mlodinow, accepts his gift (Mlodinow is a fish in a barrel here...amazing) then talks about Einstein, birthdays...more compliments...laughing...nobody is listening to anything...fucking genius...and scariest thing on this planet
@shiya3 No Sir, Deepak Chopra is a lying douche bag selling books of misconceptions of reality to desperate uneducated people who will believe anything.
@bigboy45454545 < I like to know when did D. Chopra lie ? This man has the formal and traditional education to talk about the concepts, he has written about.
This video has the synchronicity and answers your ignorance; Einstein was framed with "Jewish conspiracy" when he proposed his GToR. This 3.14 his birth date, lol and pi # to infinity. That's how non-local consciousness communicates ! In order, for you to experience it, you must be humble and seek it.
@bigboy45454545 lying douchebag? please explain, because the man is brilliant and knows more about the spiritual aspect of this existence than most people are willing to even consider
@blackhog42 Why don't you investigate Deepak Chopra for the lying douchebag that he is yourself there Sport? He basically believes that magic is real and apparently so do you. So sorry that you're a deluded dimwit. Work on that. The only thing that I'm willing to consider is reality. Science tells us about reality, douchebag tells us about unsubstantiated supernatural bullshit.
@bigboy45454545 Wow, why so hostile and miserable sounding? Deepak absolutely believes all of of this science, go watch the more recent interview with Leonard and Deepak on Larry King, it's here on youtube and it's fascinating. But Deepak also has expanded his consciousness enough to where science isn't the only answer to this reality, there's something more universal in all life and creation, a sort of oneness. Please don't limit yourself to only calling spiritualty "magic", learn about it
a field of superimpositions of possibilities? does he mean a range of subconsciously compiled forecasts of reality? an electronically coded organic inventory of plans? a cache of potential reality-tunnel projections? a meat-transceiver for sympathetic brainwaves forming a focused intention?
@MrCalathea [look at tha 'spiritual' chopraa....real spiritual with those diamonds on his glasses, is tha required to be spiritual??!!!]
Being mean is just as spiritual as being kind. Likewise, desiring material luxuries is just as spiritual as having no desire for it. All is One, so Creation is a law unto itself. Thus there's no right or wrong. Struggles arise only when we become excessively attached to the material world & body, to the point where our lives are heavily dictated by it.
I asked "talking gibberish that no one else understands". There ARE other Chinese who understand Chinese.
Even a dead language with only 1 speaker left (there are thousands of them, sadly, throughout the world) HAD other speakers.
Actually, DC DOES claim truth and uses specific words in OTHER fields that OTHER people like the physicist DO know more about, and those words DO have specific useful meanings in those fields.
@iExperiencedit Yah really, nothing he says makes any sense nor produces anything except the feeling of warm fuzziness. There is no application beyond the placebo effect for ppl from anything he says, and what he says has no consistency and doesnt match with anything in science. Its all touchy feel good be one with the universe baloney. When one claims that is REAL they gotta prove it. I notice that all you can do is pose another vague question. Sorry but thats not vindication in the least.
Some say that Deepak just preys off the fact we know so little...but the same can be said about Mlodinow, Steven Hawking, and many other such figures. The notable difference, however, is that Deepak isn't saying anything new. It's all ancient mysticism based on one truth---the Oneness of All...which means it has stood the test of time. On the other hand, 'scientific truths' always seem to keep having to be revised. Modern science is just a wishy washy guessing game.
@No1warp9 Do you feel the same way about medicine? Rocket science? Was it just lucky guesses that rid most of the world of polio? That got the astronauts to the moon and back? If you see something special and useful in belief in "the oneness of all" that's great, but don't try to belittle science to make yourself feel better.
@TheNicRen First, science didn't get rid of 'polio'. It still exists, but has taken on new names. Second, vaccines are both dangerous & useless. Please educate yourself on this matter. Second, modern medicine is mostly a big scam. See an MD if you get injured...but if you get sick, treat yourself or see a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctor, a master herbalist, a homeopath, etc. Rocket science? Big deal. I'd rather be able to grow food. Science is guesswork...hence, all the experiments.
@TheNicRen "If you see something special and useful in belief in "the oneness of all" that's great, but don't try to belittle science to make yourself feel better" Well said.
@TheNicRen This is the whole weakness of sciene, it's dismissal of the subtle and embracing of the gross. Yes in the gross physical universe Science as showed "many wonders" as a bible thumper might say but it's dismissal of the spirit/soul, our connection with nature, God, etc. has put us in a strange materialistic world view that thinks it's ok to build huge concrete jungles, destroy nature, live a completely superficial life and wonder why depression is the #1 mental illness in America.
@TheNicRen Making ourselves feel better is precisely the function of medicine, and is as 'useful' if not more than shooting men onto rocks in space, to refer fairly to your examples. I am sceptical of these men, like you, as all should be of apparent lies; but intuition begs me to permit them their say. Remember, that many scientific breakthroughs were achieved through alleged occult and pseudo-scientific method, even mere 'witchcraft'. Some truth can be found in everything, respect your limits.
@kbdkbd99 If I cared to enlighten you, I would research them now and list them, but I don't frankly. You can find them yourself, the knowledge would be reward enough for your efforts. I didn't give examples initially due to lack of space. I think you know I'm not talking BS too.
@01110110010110110101 all that you and I can say for certain is that I challenged you to name a scientific breakthrough that was the result of occultism or witchcraft, and you were unable to name a single instance.

@mphello [Neither opinion has "stood" any "test" (unlke scientific theories). They are simply repeated endlessly by believers]
Do you really believe that all the millions of people in the world support mainstream scientific opinions/theories because they're well-educated on the material? Hardly. They do so only because they keep hearing it repeatedly by the institutions of 'authority'...to the point where they're conditioned to believe it...all without question, skepticism or personal research.
@mphello [Others disagree and believe in "the dividedness of all"]
Yes...like most scientists. That's why modern science fails to realize the connections between all their 'breakthrough discoveries' as they relentlessly continue to reduce, compartmentalize, categorize & separate reality (consciousness) into comprehensible bits & pieces...despite decades of futile attempts to come up with a satisfactory 'TOE' (Theory Of Everything). Their motto must be "divide & conquer".
@mphello [No. That's science's STRENGTH. What HAS stood the test of time is the power of EVIDENCE and PROOF]
Science doesn't have a monopoly on the application of evidence, or even logic. It's what humans have been doing since day 1...not to mention even animals inherently employ logic (they just don't debate logic). Only recently has the religion of science emerged as a means of institutionalizing natural human curiosity...all under the guise of 'protecting' us from 'dangerous superstitions'.
@firearian He seems to think we're "infinite" beings, as opposed to differentiated monkeys. But then, in his view I suppose monkeys could also be infinite.
Indeed, how else could he produce his books if not through infinite monkeys?
@DukeNavarre Thanks :) That part I seem to get... it's just his definition of infinite that I can't grasp. Does he mean physically infinite in a (somewhat like creationism) sense, i.e. we did not evolve at all but are being that were are and will be as we are now; does he mean mentally infinite, i.e. our souls/minds will continue to roam the galaxy/cosmos even after we die etc; or does he mean some sort of other infinite?
@firearian By 'infinite', Chopra is stating a logical conclusion from the truth that All is One. The term 'infinite' is thus applied to all reality (consciousness/awareness/existence), which is an illusion because it is the product of the illusion of separation. Hence, space/distance, time & motion are illusions as well. Yet without the illusion of separation, there's no illusion of identity, from which the illusion of awareness emerges, and from which 'existence' emerges. Awareness = existence.
You know if you atheists need a scapegoat as it seems you so badly do... why don't you quit stooping to racism (yes people can still tell you're racist even if you don't blatantly say racial slurs) and go whine about someone like James "Sweat lodge" Ray from The Secret instead of the gentleman and scholar Dr.Deepak Chopra.

@ContraPoints
What do you mean "scientism"? Mlodinow in his comment does not leave the sound ground of science itself.
outsidemendham 1 month ago
@outsidemendham I mostly just mean a cultural attitude, a kind of chauvinism. Mlodinow is stubbornly guarded against using the concept of infinity outside of specific uses in mathematics, and responds to metaphorical and interpretive uses of ideas from QM with a kind of pedantic insistence on "correct usage." The responsibility is on Chopra to learn what Mlodinow means by "superposition," etc., but he doesn't seem to feel a reciprocal responsibility to understand what Chopra is saying. (Cont.)
ContraPoints 1 month ago
@ContraPoints Of course, I have very serious doubts about Chopra's intellectual honesty, and I do think he throws around Quantum terms in a way that is deceptively only half-metaphorical. But it's Mlodinow's insistence on exclusively analytic, mathematical, and "correct" thinking, and feigned or real inability to engage in more interpretive thought (you get the idea that he won't say "consciousness" until it's defined mathematically) that gives him the appearance of what I'm calling scientism.
ContraPoints 1 month ago
@ContraPoints
I'm not even sure there is a concrete definition of "scientism". I've heard the term flung around for things as minor as "Science is useful" to "Science is the only form of knowledge" or what not.
So I'm not really understanding why you applied the term.
piprod01 1 month ago
@piprod01 I mean a cultural attitude, rather than a doctrine. See my comments to outsidemendham.

KaHabbful 1 month ago

TheNicRen 3 months ago 10
@TheNicRen First, science didn't get rid of 'polio'. It still exists, but has taken on new names. Second, vaccines are both dangerous & useless. Please educate yourself on this matter. Second, modern medicine is mostly a big scam. See an MD if you get injured...but if you get sick, treat yourself or see a TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) doctor, a master herbalist, a homeopath, etc. Rocket science? Big deal. I'd rather be able to grow food. Science is guesswork...hence, all the experiments.

No1warp9 3 months ago
@mphello [Others disagree and believe in "the dividedness of all"]
Yes...like most scientists. That's why modern science fails to realize the connections between all their 'breakthrough discoveries' as they relentlessly continue to reduce, compartmentalize, categorize & separate reality (consciousness) into comprehensible bits & pieces...despite decades of futile attempts to come up with a satisfactory 'TOE' (Theory Of Everything). Their motto must be "divide & conquer".
No1warp9 3 months ago
@mphello [No. That's science's STRENGTH. What HAS stood the test of time is the power of EVIDENCE and PROOF]
Science doesn't have a monopoly on the application of evidence, or even logic. It's what humans have been doing since day 1...not to mention even animals inherently employ logic (they just don't debate logic). Only recently has the religion of science emerged as a means of institutionalizing natural human curiosity...all under the guise of 'protecting' us from 'dangerous superstitions'.

Does anyone get what Chapra's saying... it's quite complicated in itself... and to me at least it doesn't make any sense....

@firearian He seems to think we're "infinite" beings, as opposed to differentiated monkeys. But then, in his view I suppose monkeys could also be infinite.
Indeed, how else could he produce his books if not through infinite monkeys?

@DukeNavarre [how else could he produce his books if not through infinite monkeys?]
You and I are sort of on opposite ends of this argument...but that was a really funny statement.
Isn't humor great!
