Im going to put this out and i dont care if you say Sacramone deserved it. Cheng Fei had a .2 higher start value on her first vault than Sacramone. Fei's second vault had a .7 higher start value than Sacramone. This is only if Cheng Fei landed or put at least one foot for landing to get counted for it. I believe her second vault she did not have a foot down to land it so it got counted for it along with a serious deduction, even though she didnt land it in my opinion.
All this time later and it still bugs me. It's a fundamental rule of gymnastics that if you fall, you're done. It isn't right that Fei could do one extraordinary vault and one poor one and still outscore Alicia who did two terrific ones, albeit less difficult. You should not get credit for doing something difficult if you miss it.
@intldawn You're simplifying the situation. Cheng's second vault wasn't all bad; she had good body position and form, legs glued together, etc. She got everything except for the missed block and her landing. She got credit for the parts she did right, got MAJOR deducations for what she did wrong. and no, it is NOT a fundamental rule of gymnastics that if you fall, you're done. Where are you getting this rule from? I thought a fall = deduction, nothing more.
@ravel111 I've watched gymnastics for more than 20 years. Indeed, the lay of the land used to be that falling takes you out of contention for medals. This scoring system gives credit for trying something hard even if you miss, which isn't right. The vault wasn't all bad but it was bad enough. Missing her block is a major technical error and she landed on her knees. I don't blame the judges for her score. But, call me a purist, there's something wrong with winning a medal even when you fall, IMO.
@intldawn well so what is the solution to this scoring system? If it's all about perfect execution then most gymnasts won't take the challenging vaults/skills; where would the motivation be for gymnasts to perform risky and difficult skills? Maybe if the deduction for a fall would be more, like a full two points off?
@ravel111 You're right, there must be a balance between difficulty and execution. In the old days, you didn't get full credit for a move if you had too many deductions. Similarly, maybe they could "devalue" the difficulty score for vault if there are too many deductions. This is too complicated, I know, so it won't happen. Brilliant as Fei is, I would argue she didn't earn that high difficulty score because the vault was so poorly performed. I don't know. It's just a thought.
I think it it was really stupid that she won the medal instead of Alicia Sacramone. Alicia landed BOTH of them perfectly and she fell on the last one. I love Cheng Fei but I don't think she deserved this medal for vault.
that is a very good thing for alicia sacramone..WHAT!?!?!....you are such a rude ass-hole! in your face that she got bronze and alicia nothing.....even when she falls she is better than sacramone!!!!
@MrJST94 I don't think he meant it like that. I think he meant in Alicia's eyes, it's good because it gives her a chance to medal. I don't think he meant that it's good she fell because he's a shallow person, although sometimes he is.
Tim please!! "I've never seen a gymnast scream like that before". Don't you remember when Svetlana Khorkina screamed right infront of your face in 2000?!?
So very glad that they changed the code... a deduction of 0.8 for a fall wasn't nearly enough to separate those with high difficulty and low execution from those with low difficulty and high execution.
Her first vault was absolutely beautiful! I don't understand how that second one scored in the 9's for execution with 2 very obvious mistakes. Oh well.
Oh and Bart remember Svetlana Khorkina in 2000 Olympic AA, she was scary. Maybe if you yell at your coach before your vault you suddenly get cursed and fall on the vault you do, (yes I know that in Sydney the vault was screwed up) but it is weird that they both yelled and then later fell on a similar vault...
I think she felt uneasy right before her second vault. knowing she wasn't feeling it and might not hit. that's why she screamed. she was like, come on!! just one more vault!!
I get how she got the medal ... start value ... but I still don't think it's right. You need to show conistancy on TWO vaults when it counts! I love Cheng Fei as much as an gymnastics lover but seriously, come on.
Hmm, I wonder what would have happened if she fought for the landing and kept her hands up? It looks like she could have, how much of a deduction would it be if only her knees touched?
i love cheng fei but i can understand when people say the bronze should've gone to alicia. but i still can't help but feel kinda glad she did get the bronze. she NEVER falls on her signature vault, and has never fallen on it since the 2005 world cup. she was just unlucky. hong un jong knows she got lucky cause her landings have absolutely no control. given her past performances, she was lucky she was still on her feet.
I'm sorry, I know this is a very silly question. But does anyone know what she is saying when she screams? Why would she scream out loud instead of using a hand signal or something? I love her! I'm just curious. It was obviously very unusual, as the commentators said that as well.
think it was just a scream. probably to get herself hyped up because she's about to perform her signature vault, going for the gold in her home country. also being a 3 times world champion in vault adds to the pressure.
What's he talking about, her teammates picking her up all competition long? She nailed her VT in the TF, and, although she fell on BB, she finished the routine immaculately (that could have been a complete disaster, but she continued like nothing happened and nailed it), not to mention her spectacular floor routine that clinched the gold for China!
Im going to put this out and i dont care if you say Sacramone deserved it. Cheng Fei had a .2 higher start value on her first vault than Sacramone. Even with a fall, Cheng Fei is still the best female vaulter of all time, 3 time world champion on vault. And certainly is one the best on floor.

Queen of the bar-Svetlana Khorkina

Her Amanar gets tons of height but really no distance. Kinda just goes straight up then straight down.

@ccaruso81 Hong un Jong does the same thing as does Jordyn Wieber. I wonder if it's the vault or the way the athletes perform the vault.
