why do people say that this song reminds them of past physical encounters? its written about a pregnant heroin junkie he met. apparently she couldnt stop even though it was killer her and her baby. i do not know how the story ends. probably she died of an overdose before the baby was ever born.

Well, probably because people don't really choose what reminds them of what. If a song was important to them at a certain time, it will probably remind them of that time later on. If it has a feeling they recognize from something else than what it's about, it might remind them of that. Not so much a logical but an emotional thing.
