@tonylin2 Fair question. Mostly, I just liked the sound of it, but it also kind of amused me, seeing as I rarely talk about things which actually suck. Most people get that it's ironic, so I've stuck with it.
At 8:26 there's a quick cameo of Hayao Miyazaki (left) and Yasuo Otsuka (right background). Also, that's the Miyazaki Clan again at 8:37, including wife Akemi Ota (herself an accomplished and pioneering animator) and son Goro. Small world! Thanks for the video review, I'm a big fan of the original Lupin III series, and can't wait for the US DVD release this spring. I'll be posting this on Ghibli Blog later tonight, so many thanks!
@gamesDAMNED No worries :) I figured it was Hayao Miyazaki in the Citroen right enough, but I'd no idea that Otsuka appeared as well, much less the rest of Miyazaki's family! I think that was the last episode right enough, so they probably just wanted to have some fun with it.
Please don't don't bag on lupin the 3rd I've seen the entire series dubbed in Japanese and it's fucking A in my book, I'll tell tell u whats terribly annoying though, BoBoBo-Bo BoBo the industry even had the nerve to English dub it!?
@Deadeyedavid177 Oh I couldn't agree harder. BoBoBo-Bo-BoBo in English if a freaking sin. All the awesome japanese pop culture references gone. The show makes even less sense in English than in Japanese and that's saying a lot.
oh I loved bobobobo it was funny and made sense lupine I would love to see but I wouldnt know where to begin looking but at least I know I can read subtitles fairly well
I always check youtube out for something new on lupin and hadn't run into this until today. I have always been a huge Lupin fan since i first saw it (it was Mamo) and i loved it. I havn't heard or seen anything on the original tv series but i have been looking for it. This is a great review telling me that i need to look harder. Thanks for the info and great job.
BTW netflix has Cagliostro up on instant queue now... Have you seen 0 mission before? It's a telling of how the gang all met.
@Wolveroo Thank you :) Afraid I've still not picked up the DVD for Episode 0 though. I was thinking about trying to do another review covering several of the films/specials in one video, so I'll see if I can include that one.
wow stumbled on this by complete accident, I have seen the first series a few years ago, and i agree with everything said here. Really extremely well done review of the series
What a great review! I have been a Lupin fan for years, but only now has it really become possible to get lots of titles, so now the challenge is: which ones to get and which ones to pass over? I've often wondered about the difference between the 1st and 2nd series, so this review is especially helpful. Looking forward to checking out your other reviews!
@bcoffin12345 Thank you :) I'm hoping to cover more of the Lupin franchise in the future, but I've still got lots to watch as well. If you're interested though, my best three picks so far would be; Castle of Cagliostro, The Fuma Conspiracy and Dead or Alive.
Wonderful review. I've never seen any of the Lupin Series' but I do plan to get into it. Are those musical interludes that cut in when you switch to different sections from the Lupin III soundtrack?
@asdertert12345 They are indeed, yeah. The little jingle that plays over the 'director gets the sack' card was from the second series, but other than that, they're all from season one.
@AlmightyChewbaccer I know, I would have put money on that never happening... Still, I wish them all the best with it - I'll certainly be buying a copy.
@Areashiftybun Eastern Star isn't the one that got the license for the 1971 Lupin the 3rd series, Discotek Media is
as far i know, The show will get a complete series release, the show will be be remastered, both version of the Pilot Film will be included though unfortunately the show will be Subbed only
I saw the first series when it aired on a TV on a japanese channel last year and it was my first time watching Lupin III. I actually recommend it if you are just starting off watching Lupin III. Like you said, it's different from the current stuff so you're better off watching this first instead of watching it later.
I liked the early episodes of the first series myself. Though it's kind of how I started Lupin too since when I started watching thsoe episodes first out of all the lupin stuff. Essentially anyway. I saw Lupin on Adult Swim originally, but I didn't really pay much attention to it back then/didn't like it much.
@icetyrant We never actually got Lupin on tv in the UK, so I think most people here only really know the franchise from Castle of Cagliostro and Secret of Mamo. It's a shame really, I think this first series might do okay if it had a DVD release in English.
@SuperKingNova I think it's just the parts that have already had a US release that Netflix has. The Lupin tv series they've got is the second one (red jacket).
@Areashiftybun Oh thanks for the heads up... So that's the 2nd season ..... so it's no point of watching it eh..... Where about can i watch the t.v series?
@SuperKingNova It's cool, don't let me put you off if you want to give the second season a try. The Lupin tv episodes are nearly all self-contained, so there's no need to worry about missing out on back story or anything. The first series is a little harder to get ahold of, but if you try googling "Lupin series 1", you should be able to find it without too much bother.
This was a great review. It was both informative and entertaining at the same time. I never knew the early episodes were that dark. The Lupin I'm used to is is very different, so the first series should prove to be an interesting watch. They're actually releasing it on DVD in my country (Finland), though only the first 12 eps are available at the moment. I'll certainly get them when I have the time.
@KillerOrange87 Thank you :) The early eps are a strange experience, but they're well worth it to see the series slowly taking shape. I'm always glad to hear that older series are still being re-released somewhere in the world as well - it's just a shame that I don't think there's much chance of an English language release for series one.
It does start out very dark and serious the first series, yet so much lighter than the Manga.(The whole Lupin being a rapist thing and at one point Fujiko has killed over a 1000 men) I like the lighter stories, but I don't hate the others.
Quite interested to hear your thoughts on the "Pink" series and the film.
@bluemidget276 Thank you :) I've only ever read a very small amount of the manga and I think that was from the second run (Shin Lupin III), so I wasn't actually aware the original was as dark as that - sounds like it's almost pushing into Golgo territory there. I'm hoping to come back and look at other parts of the franchise in future videos as well, particularly the pink-jacket series as it's another one that doesn't seem to get mentioned very often by English-speaking fans.
So whats up with the title "Your Anime Sucks"?
