to drive THE best car with a subordinate team mate for 5-6 years with 95% reliability he would have won 95% of the time. Schumacher is proving how average a driver he really is today. Results are not the thing I look at. It's raw one lap speed......and he isn't even on Nico's pace who wasn't a hair on his dads arse. People who love F1 should watch races from the 80's. When I argue about Schumacher, to me he isn't even on the same page as Mansell, Prost, Lauda, Rosberg, let alone Ayrton.
give Schumacher a break. I am by no means his biggest fan, i am part of the group that thinks he cheated his way through the '94 season, but he is 43, and he has to deal with the Mercedes GP car, which isnt exactly the best. What you said about Rosberg, yes, he is not as quick, but if you watch races like SIngapore this year, you see he still has some poke in his driving.
Remember this Schumacher fanboys................Senna won 41 GP from 160 odd starts. In an era when less than half the field had mechanical failures each race. Running out of fuel was a huge issue. How many times did Schumacher retire with mechanical failures 00-05? Michael was also lucky F1 was basically 3 sprint races. Not only Senna, but Prost and Mansell etc lost many races when in dominant positions due to mechanical failures. Trust me guys, if Senna had the fortune to drive
Great vid,but will ppl stop jumping on the band wagon saying that senna was the best ever,he was not,you cannot compare drivers of different eras,eg: jackie stewart won 3 world titles in 99 races, senna won 3(which of 1 he cheated, ramming prost off) with 161 races,so who is the best, you just cannot compare,he was probably the best of his era,but definitely not the best ever.I know i will get haters for my opinion, but thats what it is,my opinion.
Do you remember how terrible was the start of the careers -- even in big teams such as Renault -- of some who were later consider masters?
I am dubious about Senna the man. I think he was a good person, even if not a forgiving person, and I wonder about his belief system. But in my judgement he was head and shoulders above everyone else I saw racing since I stated following F-1 in the seventies. Of course the legend began even before he had his first oportunity to dirve an F-1 car.
One comment. In 1:48 the audio say 1 minute and 5 tenth (1:00:5) but in both subtitles appears 1:00:05... (5 hundredths)...

Wow I'm back after 3 years to this video and I've found my comments to be 2nd highest. This is worth a second watch!!

Senna - crashed to death trying to beat Schumacher who was a much bigger man in every sense and much much faster than Senna. Senna knew that even in a far better car he has no hope of beating Schumacher and just overdrove the car into the wall.
@SeanVaIen@SeanVaIen Schumacher was great, yeah, always cheating, but still... Did Schumacher win anything without the best car? The best team? Did he raced against any great driver? Did the only one who could challenge Schumacher (Ferrari's driver number 2) dared to do so? Yeah, Schumacher was great, but with 7 titles he's nothing compared to Senna, with "only" 3.
@SeanVaIen It's funny how all you can do is call me a fool. Prove that Schumacher was all that. It is proved that he cheated, that he had no challegers while he drove... So, can you convince someone about something or all you can say is "you're a fool. I win" How old are you? 5 or 6?

@flatonia I have a feeling his career wouldn't be as fruitful. I believe that drivers that start in cars that aren't GP winning cars out of the box develop a better work ethic. They try harder than drivers who start out in the top teams.
@fickendermann Ah, not sure about that. Senna was great, a monster, e freak of nature. But not the only. Personally, I consider Prost and Schumacher better than he. And Piquet was in his prime. If he had started his career in Willians, for example, for me it would be similar to Lotus: a good car, a huge opponent (Rosberg), but no chance to win the championship.
@PedroLynott I am not sure Prost and Schumacher were better than him, really not sure! they had better cars and when Senna had the best car he showed he was the best...in 1989 Prost won the championship politically against him! and Schumacher has been the first driver to show how thin the border between a great car and a great driver is. Ferrari's supremacy throughout the first 5 seasons of the 2000s was embarassing!Hakkinen would have won the same, if he had been Ferrari's driver then!
To be so confident both in and out of the car at your 1st F1 tests says it all. Most drivers are begging for an F1 seat but not Senna. He just knew how good he was and how he could beat anyone. Great guy and sadly missed forever..
Every body knows the huge difference between a genius and a good skill driver. And of course is difficult establish who was the greatest. For example Senna was the only driver that achieve this performance in his first test in F1. Fangio, Clark, Rindt and Senna was the only pilots that beat their pole times in one race. The same list + Villenueve wins with inferior car. All of them until today has records. All wins epic races in rain with inferior cars. Still Success driver? Schumacher...
What is astounding (or perhaps not so) is his absolute consumate belief in himself as he talks on camera. He knew he was special and clocking that time in the Toleman must've been amazing. Too bad Williams and McLaren didn't "invest" in young talent back then... Great video :-)
Thanks for this video. I could read the translation just fine. I also speak Portuguese fluently. Muito obrigado. I don't understand who sent me this, but am happy to get it!!! BRUNI
Compared to Ron Dennis, Frank Williams looks pretty cavalier running Senna as though it was he who was doing Senna a favour letting him drive the Williams. F1 now realises, like Lewis Hamilton at MClaren, brave young talent is the future.
There is no best driver ever. Formula 1 changes and so the characteristics needed for a driver to be the best one for a period of time are changing to.
In my opinion Ayrton Senna in fact was the best driver in Formula 1 for more than 10 years.
Iam not sure you have the credentials to analyse the best driver in F1 yourself but in the F1 paddock, still today, there is common opinion amongst team owners and directors that Senna was probably the best driver to grace F1. How Frank Williams must have then regretted his own policy of not hiring young talent and missing the best years of Senna's life.
We do not really disagree. But, what means "best driver" at all? The driver with the best car control, the quickest driver, the most successfull driver or maybe the most complete driver? I dont think there is one driver owning all of these attributes forever. In my opinion the driver with the best car control in formula one (so far) was Gilles Villeneuve, the fastest was Ayrton Senna and the most successfull was MS.
I do appreciate your comments. I think "best" and "greatest" as you say are open to suggestion but I do believe Senna was surrounded by far greater opponents and talent at a time in F1 when there were also less driver aids and car control was more reliant on pure ability. I only saw Villeneuve a few times in his tragically short career and he was clearly brave and a real racer inside a car you could allow to slide. In the paddock MS and other world champions themselves still give AS their vote.
Just imagine how Williams would have fared is he had hired Ayrton. In 1986 and 1987 Senna would have been at least dubble DWC...
No matter how odd I often find Frank Williams' driver choice, I'm not in a position to criticise. He proves himself right every time. FW is a Phoenix. Coming back after losing TAG, Honda, Renault and BMW. He's doing it again woth Toyota and Rosberg now.
Ayrton Senna, no doubt was a genius. I know this video from his Institute. In Donnington he beat the circuit record in his first time. It was a HUGE mistake for Frank Williams not hire him, just think in the new one, Lewis Hamilton. And of course a big one from McLaren too. Finaly he said a great true: The F1 is more in car than the driver.
thanks a lot mate :D Now I an understand what the god of F1 is saying :D Even at the start of his F1 career, he was great on the track. he's a person that I admire, like a role model :D
O Reginaldo inventa demais... Senna na Brabham por causa do Piquet???? O que o Nelson mais queria era ver o Ayrton pelas costas...

Finaly he said a great true: The F1 is more in car than the driver.

the Mclaren was very easy to drive he said. wonder what he would say if he tested an F1 nowadays

This is amazing, check Senna's slides! The average Joe'd be off the course.
It's weird looking back and thinking that he too had a first day in an F1 car!
Bravo!

nah, not really. the williams car was a tad unsafer in 1994 than in 86, and real different color schemes were attached.
