I'm not sure, but I believe the "Grateful Dead" own it as an organization. I know Bobby has had it on the road with Ratdog before.
I never knew how many comments there were until yesterday, or I would have clarified all of this earlier. I believe this may be the only videos of Jimmy playing it at the PLF Fillmore Denver show on 7/15/05.
Thanks for the personal account. There's a picture on phillesh.net of Phil, Irwin, and the Wolf from Oct '05. Given what you've said, and the photos of them with the Wolf just a couple months later ... I'm convinced.
So does Phil own the Wolf, or all of the GD? I guess it doesn't really matter.
well, i was taking pics for Jimmy that show, and I personally know that Phil Lesh gave it to him to play that night. Ryan Adams had played it the night before at a small show at a bar in Denver. You can debate if it's the Wolf or not, but if Phil Lesh gave me a guitar to play, and told me it was the Wolf, I'd believe him,.
How do you know this is the Wolf, and not an imitation, such as the Moriarty. Search YouTube for Moriarty Wolf Guitar and you'll see it.
When Tiger and Wolf were sold in '02, Tiger was bought by Jim Irsay (Indy Colts owner), and the Wolf sold to an unknown buyer. I don't believe the band ever announced that they had purchased the Wolf.
If they had purchased the Wolf, why would they let Jimmy play it in Denver? It's not like they are going to travel with it.
wonder when john kadlecik will be givin the chance to rock it he's the best post jerry player Furthur!!! and the unbroken chain foundation owns the guitar now ive heard they rented it for a while and were just offered to buy it and they did
No, Steve Cripe from Jensen Beach, Florida died in a fireworks blast, he made Bolt and the double-cutaway acoustic that Jerry played in that famous photo of him in a field. Irwin made Wolf and Tiger.
I remember seeing this instrument on the cover of Guitar Player in the 70's. Irwin didn't originally put the wolf on it, it was a decal that Garcia stuck on there. Irwin replaced it with inlay but didn't tell him and did such a good job that it was a while before Garcia noticed.
I seriously doubt the Strat was once owned by Garcia. He hadn't played Strat's regularly since the early '70s. I heard that Phil personally owns Wolf and not the GD. He bought it when the Jerry's guitars were auctioned. Jimmy Herring is my favorite of the 'post-Jerry' guitarists.
Did'nt read the posts to see if anyone noticed, but this is Jerry's old guitar, The Wolf. Wonder if they gave it to him for doin the Dead thing or if he bought it, but thats def it because its a one of a kind, hand made guitar.
Jimmy Herring is still too humble to blow out his own sound. But when he does it will be fierce, furious, and transcribed for the ages. For a guy so talented he sure is quiet--but I guess that's the way it is. I'm a braggart, so if I played like him I'd shove it in everyone's face. But he isn't, so he doesn't. God bless him. I met him at a Jazz Is Dead show long ago and flipped my lid at how unassuming his demeanor was.
Keep playin Jimmy. You are a legend in your own lifetime.
I met him at a FrogWings rehearsal in Palm beach in 1998. He had a hard time telling us the name of a new project he was working on, he loved the players but the name he could barely utter. We finally got him to tell us he was off to Colorado for "Jazz Is Dead" rehearsals.
Well said Action! I met Jimmy at the airport in Wisconsin after the Dead reunion at Alpine Valley 2002 - very humble and down to earth guy. During the shows stayed out of the limelight like he was a sideman. Bob and Phil would have to drag him out there and boy, would he shine. He's killing it in WSP too.
In Jer's will he wanted to give all the guitars back to the luthiers who made them, I think the creator of wolf and tiger died in a fireworks accident, so i dont know the status of that guitar
Jerry stated that he wanted the guitars go to the luthiers, but The Grateful Dead actually owned them. The Dead's position is that they really belong to the fans and the Dead would make them more accessible than Doug Irwin (who made Wolf, Tiger & Rosebud). I agree with them - nice sentiments, Jer, but the guitars should stay with the band and the fans.
Steve Cripes made the "Bolt Guitar" around '93 and was building another for Jerry when he died in a fireworks blast - his other hobby.

@Noodlebass Not sure, but I doubt it very much.

No shit, that is Wolf. I thought it was just an Alembic.

NO, they did not give JImmy the guitar. He just played it at this one show back in 2005. The GD members "own" the guitar.

NO THEY DON'T

The man that owns the wolf rents it to the GD family. No guitar is missing.

Who has wolf now? Is that the guitar that's missing?
