@cekinxxx Esplonade. It's a multi-million dollar construction project going on for the renovation of the Neward waterfronts. Naturally this would belong to Tony, however New York has a hold on it as well so they share the profits. John wants Carmine (his boss) whacked cuz currently he and tony are arguing over the percentage of the profits, hence a work stoppage. John is being effected the most by this because the majority of his money comes from construction. If he kills Carmine, back to work.

hey any of you idiots wanna do shit like this? i sit in my car, u come, get in tell me bla bla bla..... shit that i hve to think about to make ssence then just leave and i act cool like i just had a mafia meeting
The thing that i appreciate most in this conversation between Tony and Johnny is their style and elegance (while also maintaining a mutual respect and a toughness in their voice). See how after Johnny Sack enters Tony's car there is about a ten second period of silence in which both of them act natural to try to put the other in an awkward position and persuade him to speak first. Tony, of course gives in to this waiting game because he is more impulsive, but the conversation remains subtle.
Because of wire taps and a constant lack of trust between members of "a certain italian-american subculture", wise guys are used to talking in code (more or less subtle). In this scene Johnny tells Tony that life for both of them would be much easier without Carmine around, and he basically gives Tony the green light to clip Carmine, also guaranteeing that he will not interfere afterwords. To this realization, Tony replies with a quiet "Holy Shit" only after Johnny had left his car.
@ryan7dunn Correct. Even when Carmine spoke w Tony over the phone about clipping johnny Sac, carmine kept saying 'I didn' say nothing' and Tony read between the lines, and got it.
I liked it better when Tony was doing business with Johnny instead of Phil Leotardo. Phil did everything he could to piss Tony off; ever since Tony's cousion Blundetto clipped his little brother there has been a soft spot there.
@Dilly5 He was a boss for about five seconds (not counting his time in prison) and he spent that entire time trying to quell the issue between Phil and Tony Blundetto. Hard to judge his performance at all.
@jetelegen Well the whole internal war inside the Lupertazzi family started because Johnny Sack ordered the death of Lorraine Calluzzo. Which began the retaliation cycle which caused the deaths of Joey Peeps, Angelo Garepe and Billy Leotardo. If Johnny Sack didn't let his ego get in the way and wasn't blinded by his desire to be boss, he would have took Tony's advice and got rid of Rusty Millio. Who was in fact using Carmine Jr has a puppet to try and be boss.
@Dilly5 And all of that occurred before Johnny Sac was the boss (in fact, it was exactly what it was about). I can't go along with the claim that he was a bad boss because of his behavior in the feud with Little Carmine, because it's irrelevant.
As for the "he should've taken Tony's advice and gotten rid of Rusty Millio" claim (and I don't remember that from season five, to be honest), that too would've been an act driven by "ego...desire to be boss." No?
I just realize that talking between mobsters and talking with one's girlfriend is almost the same. Lot's of code language. Well, at least on the girl's part.
@CROOKLYNSNEWS John works for Carmine Lupertase:Don,NY...Tony Soprano: Don NJ.
Carmine wont budge on the split from a project called "The Esplanade"..a Jersy waterfront construction site...but John will..if Tony has him whacked so he can take over.
I happened to notice that when their speaking to eachother, the other side of their faces are always out-of-sight for another, eather due to angle or shadow. I wonder if that,s coincidental or intentional and symbolic of how they can never fully read eachother. Could simply be coincidental
this seen epitomizes why and how these guys rose up the ranks and became bosses. They both know how to read between the lines, say very little to get the message across without committing to anything and reading the person's character
In retrospect. Tony should have killed Carmine. It could have avoided a lot of the problems they had with Johnny and Phil over Tony B's killing of Phil;'s brother. Johnny might have been more willing to control Phil.
this is the best seen ever. Johnny's motive was so subtle but so obvious. It's one of those things where after his last line, the audience is saying along with tony "HOLY SHIT."
Tony and John were the greatest of enemies but the best of friends. I love these guys, both of them. John wants the best for his family, as does Tony, they are both corrupt and evil motherfuckers and they both should be in hell. Regardless of that, they are amazing actors, I love them both and they really are wonderful actors.
John always scared me... A true sociopath, killing both friends and enemies and playing both sides with New York and New Jersey. A great portrayel of a mobster:D
these were some of the best arguments: tony and johnny sack. he's always horrifying when he's talking seriously about business, even when he's right next to tony...even when johnny is rational and has a good point (like here), he makes the perfect antagonist and can be downright scary
what this esplonate they are always talking about?
