Ray Peterson was such a great artist. Saw him in the late 60s and he was wonderful. This is by far the best version of this song. Loved it when it came out and still listen to it regularly
One of my all-time favorite ballad! I can remember the dances I went to played this song as the "last one of the night". It really got the people on the dance floor....
Ray did a great recording of this romantic standard before Paul Anka recorded it. Both recordings are great to dance to. Swirl around the dance floor on your toes because you feel you'll go airborne with the feelings from this song.
What a hidden gem of a song! This by far has to be the most overlooked version of a song ever! If we weren't in this crazy vulgar 2011 "Lady Ga Ga" era, this could be a hit today...Beautiful!
Glad to see the comments on this song - It's a remake of Jessie Belvins origional - this song was the sign off song for Miami's Legondary DJ Rick Shaw who retired in 2007 after 50 years on radio. WQAM in the 60's was the # 1 Radio station in the nation and Rick Shaw was at that time the # 1 DJ in America WQAM was owned by STORZ Broadcasting company. Their DJ Lineup included Rick Shaw - Jim Dunlap - Roby Younge - Charlie Murdock and for a short time legondary DJ Alan Freed ...
I remember hearing this song every night back in 1963 on 'Swinging WJJD' in Milwaukee closing out the night's rock and roll. I love Jesse Belvin's original version but this is my favorite. Peterson was a really great singer.
I absolutely adore Ray Peterson's music. Love that very gentle and poignant voice of him. And I do love his version of this song as well. Thank you for the post.
When you listen to this it takes you back in time...though it's not my era I really appreciate the quality, the melody, the meaning, the unique voices without any digital cropping or enhancement of their own time. Too good to be forgotten and not to be appreciated....Sentimental, solemn and heavenly harmony!
This song was #1 on the WQAM survey April 4, 1964. As stated in previous posts, Rick Shaw played this song every night at the end of his show. Over the years this song would appear in the top "56" of WQAM's survey's. When radio and survey's were local and you would hear the songs the DJ liked, not what he or the station got paid to play.
Lots of good memories for me! During my high school years, a DJ on WQAM in Miami (Rick Shaw) would play this every night when he signed off. I still love it!
@devans5547 Im sure it was but the song was even bigger than that, I grew up with it in the swingin 60's London. Not all ofus were into the Beatles. Great song.
Brings back such memories of an era gone by. Every night I listened to this at the end of the show on WQAM in Miami, Florida. I just recently looked up this particular song by Ray Peterson. I could not remember who sang it until I listened to a few singers. What a sexy voice Ray Peterson has. I like it better than all the other versions!!!
I see a lot of us remember WQAM as a rememberance of our teen years. I am a 1965 Flying L grad, and can remember listening to WQAM from the age of 7 on. Glad to see there are so many of us still embracing our youth. Lot's of fond memories.
@devans5547 I listened to WQAM every single night and I never ever forgot this beautiful song that the show ended with. It gives me goosebumps listening to it. I was so young and absolutely loved the music of that special era.
@devans5547 Wow! A lot of us South Florida folks seem to remember this song well. I'm a 1963 Stranahan grad and associate it with first love, school dances, balmy breezes, nights on the beaches all the good stuff. If you can find the YouTube video of Rick Shaw's last 7 minutes of broadcasting at WMXJ, they closed it with this. You may shed a tear or two.
I remember this being the closing song of WQAM radio station in Miami, FL back in 1959-60. I used to love my girlfriend so dearly at midnight. We hug and snuggle and kiss. I loved that song every night even though it was sort of curfew song for our love.
This was my wedding song for me and my first love Lewis W. Meeks back on December 4, 1971... We are not married anymore for I foolishly thre away the only true love I have ever had.. we would have been married 39 yrs this Dec.. We have however been in contact for about 3 yrs now off and on.. I am praying for one last chance for us to be together again.. I am available and so is he.. If you are out there and see this... I will love u until my last breath.........
Our AM station used to sign off every Sat night with this song. Never heard a better version of this song. In fact, none of his recordings have been bested. What a voice!
This is the song I dedicated to my girlfriend durIng my stay in J APAN , now she's my wife for morethan 20 years...this is very romantic song for lovers ...thanks for this wonderful song .
Absolutely one of the best ballads of the Rock & Roll era. This should have been a much bigger hit that it was...has always been one of my favorites and the best version of this song ever recoded.
@PutOnASweater You are absolutely right. I say this as someone who wore out the Paul Anka version of the song on my old record player, which I also love. I think Ray is a much underappreciated artist.
This is the 51st song on my 1959 playlist. My 111 'year' playlists let you relive the sounds of any year back to 1900 - you can be right back at that dance again in any year! A trip back in time with the click of your mouse. . . . . . . . .
OH MY...I was 13, had a transister radio with ear plugs...DJ Rick Shaw, WQAM Miami, played this as his closing song at 11pm. I'd hide the radio under my pillow, just to hear this velvety voice ahhhhh, to be young again and hear music like this!
Rick Shaw did a great job as d. j., and though he retired from that, he keeps busy with the Magi children's fund. Great job Rick, and thanks for the memories!!!
