  • it was a big deal moving from scrolls to codices

  • Lol!!! i cant stop laughing... :) thanks for sharing this video... :)

  • hahahahaha - love this!

  • I got this as an attachment to an email many years ago - so glad it's on youtube now!!

  • It's kind of funny the technology that we take for granted. Even something that is so well known how to use now, had to start somewhere. Great Video. :D

  • This is so recognizable, and soooooo funny!!! Great job!!!

  • OH!!! now i see how to do it :D this helped me alot! THANKS!

  • That's probably how tech-technicians see people like me and other relatively unskilled people. :p

  • Wow, is this video great! Wonderful job.kla

  • Any idea who produced this and who owns the copyright?

  • It should be stimulating to assist any individual who requires our help. Monk needed assistance and he got. As teachers/professionals, we should not loose sight of the fact that our students will continously need our help. We need to have patience and endurance in order to take our children from traditional literacies and lead them into the technological era of this century.

  • New literacies create fear, anxiety and uncertainity among many persons especially adults.Young children are more enthusiastic and fascinated about technology. They should therefore be scaffolded in the using of new technologies so that they be comfortable as they experience new literacies.

  • Wow! Monk is inadvertently teaching us some lifelong lessons here. As educators we need to receive the morale of this exercise. There are always going to be those of us who are ignorant of one thing or another. We need to be facilitators of their learning. Seeing and doing are the best ways to make a concept clear. Let us therefore not presume/assume. Let us be patient and tolerant of those who learn at a slower pace. And let us herald the ignorant on to the era of NEW LITERACIES.

  • Insightful !! As educators/ literacy professionals we should never practice to be assumptive about children and what they know. With regards background knowledge, if they do not have it, we need to create it for them because it provides the springboard for learning.

  • This is a good example of how new information needs training or modeling to provide skills and correct use of the unknown task. Monk is having difficulties relating to the presentation of text inbook form as all he knew was how to use a scroll. He is uncomfortable as he believes that the only way he knew was easier. Changes take time for acceptance and literacy is changing in its' demands for use and understanding. With repeated help he is now able to successfuly interact with the material.good.

  • New defined . This just goes to show that at some point in time we encounter new things . Then.... it was the book now... its the internet /NEW LiTERACIES . Overtime with exposure and purposeful interactions this too will become second nature.

  • This video is very funny, but it's true. That is why we must not take for granted at times that our students know how to do certain things. For this man he is learning for the first time how to use a book.He is experiencing a new literacy moment.

  • I think Monk needs new literacies I enjoy listening and viewing it It just goes to show that as teachers we need to equip students with all the skills necessary for them to become competent.

  • The book is new literacy for monk at that point in time, he has already acquired traditional literacy which the scroll represent. As teachers we have to be cognizant that what seem simple to us (as a result of doing the same thing over and over) may prove difficult to our students. Provide them with adequate opportunities to learn

  • the vehicle of new literacies is the web. persons who are not incline to using web technology will be in the same position as this monk. however, if he is provided with the correct help in his teachable moment then he will know how to use his new literacy device

  • it is best for educators to always provide students with advance oraganizers, give individualized attention, teach task analysis to students and when prior knowledge is lacking provide students with activities to build the schema needed for a particular task

  • This shows that their is diversity in the classroom and that we must not take it for granted that all students or learners know what they are to do.Monk must be taught traditional literacies then New literacies, and this will enable him to become literate and function well in society.

  • Wow! Now I know why we must never take it for granted that given tasks are simple for everyone. Monk needs to log on to 'NEW LITERACIES'... that's the way to go to function in today's society!

  • Monk needs to acquire skills in new literacies. If he is still unable to manipulate a book then technology is a long way from him. His assistant needed to make the experience more fun for monk.

  • Comment removed
