August 8, 1993. A serial production JAS-39A Gripen (#39-102) suffered a Pilot Induced Oscillation during an airshow over central Stockholm, Sweden. The PIO eventually resulted in an uncontrolled pitch-up which stalled the aircraft and from which recovery was not possible.
In accordance with the flight instruction, the pilot left the aircraft and survived.
Although many were watching the airshow, the plane landed in an uncrowded spot and crushed a few bicycles. Noone was seriously injured.
i used to think it would be really cool to control a machien like this. After seeing some of the videos of crashes i realize that it isnt as cool as i thought. before youtube and the net i never ever saw visually just how bad these things can really bite
I'm pretty sure this jet is the one that's supposed to be able to do just about anything in 360 space. Looks like this may have been a test flight gone wrong. I believe it's Russian so there's that... The video of this thing in action literally defies physics. At least the pilot got to eject.
does anyone notice that fighter pilots dont think about were the danm plane is going to crash at. i know they have to deal with there own safty but really ....lets say theres 2,000 people under him, would he eject just to save his sorry ass or pull to the side or some other place not leading to the people....they really need to start thinking about the before they just ditch the plane.
@moto2244 We don't know what was going through the pilots head. For all we know the plane was no longer responding to inputs from the pilot so the only thing to do was eject. I agree with you but I bet most pilots are very aware of where they are and do their best. But there is only so much you can do with a 7 ton plane that is malfunctioning.
@moto2244 Try stating that comment to an actual pilot and I'm sure they will punch you right in the face for it, from what I have seen a fighter pilot lets say in a city or a town actually looks for an actual area where it involves if possible zero to as few casualties possible, as a pilot puts other peoples safety (esp civilian) before his own and stays with the craft until the last moment. What this pilot in this video had done , would be considered to be correct under the circumstances.
@moto2244 this particular pilot didn't have any choice. The aircraft was uncontrollable so there is no point staying in it any longer. The higher he ejects the better chance of survival. Please comment on something you have a clue about, that way you won't have to comment on anything.

@TheGermanturtle He didn´t suck at flying. The digital flight control system unfortunately failed at this prototype aircraft. Therefore it got uncontrollable . Nowadays no modern warbird can be flown without bulky computing assistance anymore. Even the good old F 16 can´t.

@TheRealHawkeye The Eurofighter is a dual-engine plane vs the Gripen only has one, so comparing the two would be like comparing an F-18 to an F-16: the Eurofighter is capable of a higher speed and payload, but only barely which makes the Gripen a very advanced single-engine fighter.
But all in all, the plane is only about 30% of what makes a fierce dogfight: it is the pilot's skill that makes the plane capable. Compare the plane's user instead. =P
@crevesencio No, you moron. That's the JAS 39 Gripen, Sweden's primary multi-role fighter jet. This was when it first came out, and like all great planes, they have accidents and some crash. Chinese planes are not great.
How many Grippens has Saab sold worlwide? Let me count....ZERO
Why Volvo and Saab car brands had been sold to Americans? Did the Swedish Monarchy received its WELL deserved commission ...?
I prefer the Viggen; Gripen is just the first 3rd gen crap that initiated the path for substandard products like the mediocre F22...all build for wasting tax payers money just for pleasing viewers eyes on airshows.
The thing is that this plane is just a low cost option for third world countries... with leases reporting little bennefits to Saab... meanwhile Swedden´s neighbours had opted for American Crappy and Costly planes instead.
I´ll better to xpend tax payers money on an European cheap multirole plane that offers jobs to europeans...than wasting it with American expensive fying shit, period.
I would say that Grippens are 3.5G; and 3.6G if they deliver the NG version...The plane turns out to be 4Gen just in terms of missfailures and maintenance costs. That´s why nobody buys that plane... instead get leases.
You forgot about India´s recent order...adding it to that list of under-developed countries. UK actually has not Grippens on their territory: Just some training program for novice pilots that was dealed by a private school with Sweden´s Ministry of Defense=outsorcing
@Funfisique the first part you are actually wrong, if you would just do a little research, you would see that they have sold to several countries worldwide, czech republic, thailand, south afrika, sweden and hungry is using them, and it has big potential to be replacement to other east european MIG-21s and MIG-29s, and Denmark is searching for replacement for their 70 F-16s, and that battle is between F18E/F, JSF, and the gripen, eat that you ignorant!
Fighter plane crash in the sky? I dont think so.... it crashed on the ground.... its like falling off a building... that wont kill you...its the sudden stop at the end which does the damage.....
It was a frozen over pitot tube causing misinformation to the main computer, the pilot chose to eject after losing a fight with the computer, he could have (but did not) switch to manual control. That info was from the discovery channel.
yeah what ever , ask your daddy how to NOT be a fucking ashole dickhead like you are , I can count to two ... even higher , not like you . LIKE IT UP NOOB . your just jelous couse you so old , that you forgotten everything about planes granny . So I sugest you to go on a holiday for some grannies , I bet you fill have fun ... but I hope you wont fly a plane , couse you will crash it without even touching it fool.
I think that's a Eurofighter Typhoon, they built that plane to be aerodynamicly unstable, and the only thing keeping it in the air is the computers. Good thing the pilot ejected.
You're the noob, as you can't even tell the difference between a Saab Gripen and a Eurofighter. Just look at a photo of a Eurofighter, then look at the video. The plane in the video has a SINGLE ENGINE, the Eurofigher has two. The plane in the video has a section of fuselage behind the wings - the Eurofighter does not. The canard are different sizes and shapes, and if you don't know what canards are, you're a noob! Google "Saab Gripen", look at a photo, use your eyes.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol , typhoons are one of the best planes in the world , its so good that i doesnt need computers to fly , computers are not only for keeping it in high fool , you dony know enything about typhoons mate
Yes it is a very good aircraft, no it can't fly without computers, because it is designed to be aerodynamically unstable in order to be more manoevrable, this means it needs thousands of small input changes per second to keep it in the air, which a pilot simply cannot do. Computer fails, it falls out of the sky. Except there are backup computers. Noob :)
I left primary school in 1984 and I learned to count. I suggest you ask your mummy how to count to two, because the Typhoon has two engines. I hope you don't want to join the RAF because if you can't identify aircraft you won't ever fly. The video was taken on August 8 1993 at Lake Vänern, Sweden, and the Saab is serial number 39-102 and the pilot was Lars Rådeström - look it up noob. It's a famous accident and was on Swedish TV but you don't know that as you weren't born then
@freddie212 : No, the video is taken on the Stockholm Water Festival, and the plane crashed in the middle of Stockholm. Look in the background, where you can see a church. Otherwise you're correct.
@freddie212 lol sorry but you're the noob. This was shot during the summer of 1993 at the "Water Festival", in Stockholm Sweden during a airshow. Miraculasly no one got seriously injured.
@RFGNT my apologies, Lake Vänern was 39-156. But it's still a Saab, which was the point of my argument, not the location. And it was still Aug 8 1993.
the fighter crashed because of a computer bug that causes the pilot to be locked out of the controls. this was during the development stage of the fighter, and the design problem was corrected shortly afterward.

Here in Germany some years ago there was a famous scetch:
Guest: "How can I get a Starfighter?"
Instructor: "By a little field and wait!"
In fact 200 starfighters crashed over Germany.
I know in this video it wasn't a starfighter, but when I saw this I remember
in this scetch.,
I hope the pilot survived without heavy injuries!

I think that's a Eurofighter Typhoon, they built that plane to be aerodynamicly unstable, and the only thing keeping it in the air is the computers. Good thing the pilot ejected.

No, it is not a Typhoon, it's a Saab

lol , its a Eurofighter Typhoon noob , not a saab , even the car saab is shit
darkwolfPL1 2 years ago
You're the noob, as you can't even tell the difference between a Saab Gripen and a Eurofighter. Just look at a photo of a Eurofighter, then look at the video. The plane in the video has a SINGLE ENGINE, the Eurofigher has two. The plane in the video has a section of fuselage behind the wings - the Eurofighter does not. The canard are different sizes and shapes, and if you don't know what canards are, you're a noob! Google "Saab Gripen", look at a photo, use your eyes.

No it´s a Saab JAS 39 Gripen. Footage is from Sweden.

lol , typhoons are one of the best planes in the world , its so good that i doesnt need computers to fly , computers are not only for keeping it in high fool , you dony know enything about typhoons mate
darkwolfPL1 2 years ago
Yes it is a very good aircraft, no it can't fly without computers, because it is designed to be aerodynamically unstable in order to be more manoevrable, this means it needs thousands of small input changes per second to keep it in the air, which a pilot simply cannot do. Computer fails, it falls out of the sky. Except there are backup computers. Noob :)

nah , finish primary school before arguing
darkwolfPL1 2 years ago
I left primary school in 1984 and I learned to count. I suggest you ask your mummy how to count to two, because the Typhoon has two engines. I hope you don't want to join the RAF because if you can't identify aircraft you won't ever fly. The video was taken on August 8 1993 at Lake Vänern, Sweden, and the Saab is serial number 39-102 and the pilot was Lars Rådeström - look it up noob. It's a famous accident and was on Swedish TV but you don't know that as you weren't born then
freddie212 2 years ago 35
@freddie212 idiot, it has just one engine, you cant count lmao
powaa4u 1 year ago
@freddie212 : No, the video is taken on the Stockholm Water Festival, and the plane crashed in the middle of Stockholm. Look in the background, where you can see a church. Otherwise you're correct.

@freddie212 lol sorry but you're the noob. This was shot during the summer of 1993 at the "Water Festival", in Stockholm Sweden during a airshow. Miraculasly no one got seriously injured.
Nichen 1 year ago
@freddie212 you look it up! the plane crashed on the island Långholmen, central Stockholm, Sweden!
RFGNT 1 year ago
@RFGNT my apologies, Lake Vänern was 39-156. But it's still a Saab, which was the point of my argument, not the location. And it was still Aug 8 1993.
freddie212 1 year ago
@freddie212 but perhaps you didn't learn your geography? It wasn't in Lake Vänern but Lake Mälaren, in the middle of Stockholm.

the fighter crashed because of a computer bug that causes the pilot to be locked out of the controls. this was during the development stage of the fighter, and the design problem was corrected shortly afterward.

There's no crash until it hits the ground.
