It is due to poor quality of video. It (though not clearly), shows amplitude also. Since the candle is a translucent material, the length to which it is illuminated is roughly proportional to the intensity of the LED, and so in tern proportional to the amplitude of voltage.
As you said, a bar graph would be more appropriate, but I want to make it too simple, just like a toy.
I'm not sure if this can be called oscilloscope...
an oscilloscope is a precission instruments that shows you the waveform of an electric signal... but this doesn't show you anything... only the frecuency, and you can't read it
maybe you can improve it using a LM3914 and a led bar, but this will be more complex...
@321pocoyo You can tell the Y position by the brightness and the color. Notice the difference when he shows the rectangular wave? Not accurate but definitely simple. And capable of showing the wave.
@321pocoyo technically speaking, an o-scope is an instrument used to observe changing signal voltages, if memory serves. the precision of modern o-scopes is not essential to it's being an o-scope but a consequence of the demands that we place on them in the field/lab.
Actually YOUR RIGHT. With a fan or something etc..or counter rotation the wave forms could be analysed. It could also be extended for the same principal. GOD ALMIGHTY Bless, If I may. (I speak in liue of the part time jobs only, slow sticker on vehicles, saying so alot to others, THE BOX, as well as publishing these outside of regular media. AGAIN, YOUR RIGHT, The principal is BETTER so negative people are just typical of good stuff. LOVE THE ROBOT!!!! HE
