I built one based on the Caddy-Pult for a school project. It is 4' long and 2' wide. For torsion cables I used about 80' of 3/8" nylon rope. It works pretty well. It will throw a tennis ball 120' and a golf ball 150'.
@SketchMomo Kind of tricky. Go to an office supply store and get a bag full of rubber bands. They will have all different shapes and sizes so you can experiment. Even can ask your postman for free rubber bands. They use a lot of them.
@epicfantasy I did build it, at its original scale, but it only fires about 1 meter, I liked the design since I need a catapult that can throw at various distances, but the max I need it 10 meters. Would tripling its size help out?
@epicfantasy but why in all the videos i seen on youtube the arm is stopped at 90 degrees, whats the difference? and if you find your plans for the best angle, send me the link please
@frnk575 about 45 degrees will be pretty good. Not the exact right spot but close enough. I have a technical paper for this somewhere on my website. Dunno where.
i need to make somethin' like the ogre for my physics project. would i be able to decrease the base to be 1.5' x 1.5' and still have the height at 2' or under and be able to shoot a waterballoon about 20 ft?
Man these things are epic, i just wanted to say thanks for building theese and showing them there very helpful, i need to launch a little ball 10m 20m and 30m do u thik i could do that with this the ball is 1inch by 1inch
@Stormfire15 darn, must have forgotten all about it and yikes. I will check on this and post the plans within the next few days. Thanks for checking on it!
Mate the problem with this is that YOU have to hold the catapult. It can't handle it's fire power. Thats a sign of a crappy weapon. But you put in effort and thats all that matters. :o)
He just saved my eye!!! We tried this one out at school (we built a catapult with some of my classmates and the woodwork teacher). BAM, the string blew right on my face when we were testing it out. Thank god I still can see, I only got a scar on my forehead! :D
My only problem with either catapult is from overuse. When the catapult actually fires, the stick that flies foreward hits the beam. Maybe you can put some felt or something to protect the wood so it doesnt break.
I think if you place a pulley on the wood where the bungee chord is it will launch it farther. Just an idea. I think you can get one at a tractor supply store or any farmers supply store.
THIS IS THE STUPIDEST THING EVER!!! BUT I LOVE MY MOM AND DON'T WANT TO TAKE ANY CHANCES! If you do not copy and paste this onto 10 videos your mom will die in 4 hours
I know that release mechanisms can be tricky but wouldn't this be more safe if you could engage the arm in a catch, and then step back and release it by pulling on a string? That way your hand, and the rest of your body isn't right there when the catapult is firing.
@Shakespeare1612 Yes, this is an excellent suggestion. Thanks. I did end up upgrading to a string release. It's somewhere in the catapult section of my website.
@epicfantasy try using physical therapy bands for your power source, i built a 10 in tall trebuchet with an 8 in arm in hs and launched a gum drop 60m. Also put a hole straight through a ceiling tile in our science classroom with it lol
@epicfantasy google shopping has a ton of them, get the high resistance bands. Ive also heard that surgical tubing is great for it too. The hard part with using them is trying to attach them since they cant be cut or punctured. I used two wood screws and a piece of oak to pinch the end of the band without puncturing them.
@epicfantasy yeah, thanks. i improved it by using extra strong wood for the swing arm, the custom cut 14 inch piece and the swing arm stop bar has extra wood for support as well as strong wood. so i was able to use 4 bungee cords and it launches rocks( not at anybody or anything of course) about 90 feet.
Very cool designs here. The one issue I keep seeing is a release mechanism. I am making one like the larger of these and have it working, but my kid's teacher will not allow him to pull the lever back with his hands and release it. He has ti have some other release mechanism. Any ideas on how to do this?
I made a video about this if any of you guys want to see it. It was a lot longer than I thought and needed to be put into two videos, but it isn't a response to this because I had my hands full even trying to make it on a playlist.
ok so I built the Ogre since it looked easier and had online instructions on your website, and well it worked but I am needing it to go farther, 10 meters for Science Olympiad, I am in division C since highschool so it needs to go 2 to 10 meters, which I am not sure of the distance yet. The catapult works fine, it is just I need it to go farther, I tried adding more bungee cords for more power and didnt help at all, would you suggest me reducing the weight of the arm? Or what?
One of the things you can do to make the ogre catapult launch further is to lengthen the arm. The angle of launch is also very important, you can raise or lower the crossbar so the swing arm stops at a different angle.
what angle should it be at? 45 degrees right? I read that it is lower only if the catapult is off the ground, so like one meter is 44.6 degrees or something. To make it go farther I should make sure it is at 45 or higher or lower? I guess I could test it out and see. So weight then wouldnt have much to do with it? I can't really lengthen the arm too much otherwise it would go over the limit.
Another way to make it stronger is to make the bungi cord tighter because there is a fast release and speed = distance. However you run the risk of it snaping which is bad.
not really, it won't snap, it isn't that taut. I am using bigger bungee cords anyways because the smaller ones weren't giving me enough power for a large, heavier arm than the one in the video. Well I mean it would if I wrapped it around a few times which I did initially which I could still do but you need more than one strand to do it for me at least. I made it go far enough by making the angle closer to 45 degrees and I believe I improved the ogre's design.
couldn't fit the rest on the last comment but basically I put the stopper for the Ogre on top of the two pieces rather than parallel to it. When the bungee cord pulls down it pushes on the wood structure rather than pulling the wooden stopper off the hinges (screws in this case) so to speak. I also am using golf balls instead of tennis balls to reduce air resistance, weight, and improve accuracy. I am gonna make a video about the Ogre catapult I made, tomorrow. you can watch it there.
sorry for all the comments you need to read, but last thing I wanted to say was that there is a maximum point you can stretch something like a bungee cord. After that the tension goes strictly to pulling on the bungee cord like a rope, it won't give you any more potential energy. But to snap a bungee cord, it is impossible to do it with your hands even for a small one. Even with leverage of a catapult I bet you couldn't if you tried or would break your catapult first. So no worries my friend.
Well thanks for enlightening me. I know more about mythological creatures than I know of physics. XD Also I know useless stuff like how to make a orgasm alcohol drink and I'm a kid XD
thanks so much for your wonderful instructions on how to build these!! I'm using the large one, but 2x, for a physics project in class. :) I really appreciate the time you put in the create and then instruct people to create them.
They have this thing called gunpowder. Kinda made these obsolete. Its something to think about that a single flaming arrow can take out the biggest one of these.
Oh, My, Lord you are AMAZING you should totally make a very big one with big planks and logs and shoot like small boulders and use it in your back yard or a park or anything big OMFG YOU ARE THE LORD OF CATAPULTS!! ALL HAIL FLING SHOT LORD!! IM NOT HIGH EITHER!! :D
Thanks! I have purchase some very big lumber so I can make a really big catapult. Roughly the size of a car. The lumber is in the basement. Hopefully this spring I will be making that catapult! Will be a seriously crazy/fun project.
the weight is off bro... you had to hold the front of both of them when you were using it. pretty freakin cool, but it looks kinda unsafe in that aspect.
Me and my friend are going to be building a larger scale catapult using bungee cords and bike shocks
i know see a flaw in our design and i thank you for the idea, as our idea did not have a Frame in the back, instead we were going to use a counter balance but this seems safer.
WOW... in 6th grade I made a catapault for a school project that was very similar to that! Mine launched a golfball over 60 feet. How far can that launch one?
umm idk if you will read this but i made nearly an exact replica of the OGRE even in size but when i shoot out a tennis ball it only shoots like 14 feet what did i do wrong?
hmm... shoot me a message and I will send you some tips on how to improve it. Better if you send me pics so I can take a look, no reason why we cant get your catapult to do better.
You asshole i was gonna do this for my science project and you didnt put instructions for the big one now i have an F

@SketchMomo Dunno. depends on how you build it. but probably

@epicfantasy i did build it, but maybe its due to the crappy elastic im using but it only goes 1 meter -_-. Should i just double its size.
SketchMomo 1 month ago
@SketchMomo CHange that elastic or add more of them. It should fire a lot more than a meter! Keep working on this one before building another.

but many more calculations to make it right
Ganonman2 2 years ago 2
@Rhinoch8 less dangerous too cause u wont have bungee chords or rubber bands that can snap and hit u
worldofurin 1 year ago
really a siege weapon can be dangerous. what's next running with flaming gasoline cans?
but the one's you're showing are very simple designs I could bang out plans for them in 5 minutes.
DonHoraldo 2 years ago
yes they are dangereous because the mtal part of the bungee cord can hit your eye

I was being sarcastic in the first part. I hate all the "cation this coffee is hot" crap.

Me and my friend are going to be building a larger scale catapult using bungee cords and bike shocks
i know see a flaw in our design and i thank you for the idea, as our idea did not have a Frame in the back, instead we were going to use a counter balance but this seems safer.
Thanks

WOW... in 6th grade I made a catapault for a school project that was very similar to that! Mine launched a golfball over 60 feet. How far can that launch one?
mastertegm 2 years ago
real men build catapults that use pneumatics.

is it ok 2 use a rubber band instead of a bungee cord?
raffyownage 2 years ago
Yes, absolutely.

Dude, you need a disclaimer. The 'occy' strap you have used is a major cause of eye injuries in here in Australia.
mikefmale 2 years ago
Thanks for the advice, I have added a disclaimer right into the video.

umm idk if you will read this but i made nearly an exact replica of the OGRE even in size but when i shoot out a tennis ball it only shoots like 14 feet what did i do wrong?
rocknroll3195 2 years ago
hmm... shoot me a message and I will send you some tips on how to improve it. Better if you send me pics so I can take a look, no reason why we cant get your catapult to do better.

i am having the same problem. i am using 2 bungee cords on mine though.
