Joyce DiDonato - Rossini : "Colbran, the Muse"

Most interesting soprano sound I've ever heard. Most sopranos don't lilt their voices like this, at least that I've heard. Trying to figure out if I like this more than other soprano songs I've listened to.

I also think that Di Donato sings better than Fleming. Fleming sang this type of music rather well in the 1990's, at that time she still maintained control and discipline because of her Mozart. But now she over-decorates and scoops. Di Donato has a perfect voice suited to arias di bravura and dramatic-coloratura role in Baroque and bel canto. She is presently the best Rossini singer.

GET THIS DISC IMMEDIATELY! Didonato seems to have a thing for sorceresses in opera. The selections from ARMIDA are stupendous. The selections from LA DONNA DEL LAGO are also exciting; in fact, this disc gives us a taste of what Didonato will do when she assumes the role of Elena in the near future. Everything on the disc is great. I just wish she'd added one or two arias from Rossini's less popular works. After all, he wrote more than five roles for Colbran.

I just downloaded this disc on iTUNES. As I listened to it, I shed tears of joy--it's difficult to imagine that a few judges at an audition once told Ms. Didonato she had nothing to offer the world as an artist! Didonato has fully come into her own. She has worked hard on her craft, and the results are magnificent. I'm glad she refused to listen to those judges. She's a consummate artist--she will remain one of my favorite mezzos of all time.

Colbran was a soprano. Joyce seems to be quite at ease in these quite high parts to a mezzo.
