I was in 1st division 76-78 and S-1 division 78-80 aboard her. It makes me sad they plan to decommission her this year. She has served well and is presently the Navy's 3rd oldest commissioned ship behind the Enterprise and Constitution. If any old shipmates remember me from that time Email me wiley659@yahoo.com. Anyone who remembers being assaulted by 2 snipes while on roving patrol in Japan. (Even if you are one of them contact me) I am trying to prove facts for benefits from the VA.
The Cleveland brought us home from Iraq in may 03 to the end of july. Crossed the equator and international date line. I was a Marine amtracker on that boat getting a ride home. Ill never forget her.
Kewl... I was stationed on that turd from 01-04...
Thought we were going to break her keel in the Med on a WestPac(War) when we went through a hurricane.. But she held up.. Nearly did a World tour that Pac..
Wonder if my name is still engraved in her starboard fan wire antenna rail on the mast...
Was lucky enough to attend a cocktail party aboard this ship in Brisbane 09 May 2008. The 400 Marines and 400 Navy personnel are a credit to the US armed forces. To the group of Marines that took me under their wing and showed me a great night, I hope the info I passed on paid off. It was a honor to spend a few hours with you all. Just remember, mutton done up as lamb!!!!

She was suppose to be sold to Mexico but it didnt happen. When I was aboard the sailors said she was one of the oldest ships in the active fleet.
