I like the way the choir sings Te Deum in this frenzied fashion during the wedding scene, which is the climax. There's a version by Saint Martin in the Fields which is a good contrast to this one; they sing it in a more leisurely fashion. T camera cutting to Mme de Tourvel laying flowers on Valmont's grave and the harpsichords and violins playing sadly while she walks away with her husband is a nice touch.
Colin Firth's Valmont is, to put it bluntly, a jackass and an idiot. I like John Malkovich's Valmont much better -- and I don't like the way in which Forman rewrote the ending. "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" wasn't just supposed to be a tragedy for Valmont -- it was supposed to be a tragedy for everyone. That being said, I suppose this ending is more realistic since people don't always end up paying for their transgressions (or at least not in life) as they do in the novel.
Well that is a very far stretched version of the book and it terribly lacks of depth. And just for the casting; not choosing Sandrine Dumas for Cécile was a huge mistake.
For a films titled Valmont, the focus is clearly on Cecile's loss of innocence via Merteuil and Valmont scheming along with her doomed love affair with Danceny while promised to an older man. Valmont went from amoral cad to broken man with nothing to live for knowing he turned his back on love. Merteuil's gentle persona hides her childishly sadistic streak from which no one was safe. She inflicted so much pain on others without a shred of retribution.
somebody please tell me, is the content of the movie based closedly on the book or there're some changes, please answer if u know, i'll be grateful :)
@bongjinmi In the book: regards to Cecile she is actually raped by Valmont, she become pregnant by him but she has a miscarriage, Valmont knew about the pregnancy and the miscarriage she in the end returns to the convent.
Madame de Tourvel does not go on with her life and in fact dies from a broken heart shortly after Valmont leaves her
Merteuil's reputation is ruined at the end and she contracts smallpox and remains ugly for the rest of her days
Thanks for the movie, one of my favorites and i can watch it over and over again haha. Emm, did you know what beautifull melody is the ending? Its really romantic and i want it in my mp3 haha Can somebody tell me?

Thank you so much for posting. I really enjoyed this movie and will no doubt watch it again.
The young Colin Firth was very handsome in 1989, but I think he does improve with age.
