What superb vocals! I think I actually prefer this version to the album one, the softer sounds of the live guitars and just the bongo for precussion give it a more gentle and mellow sound that the song suits, and of course her voice is flawless!
I love Alison and am only now discovering this. Wow! It's so rare for an artist to cover a classic and make it their own without diminishing it. Well done, Alf!
This arrangement works very well for Allison's beautiful voice and suits her style. Very nice. If you want to hear Roberta, then listen to Roberta. You shouldn't expect this to sound like Roberta.
Alison is amazing. I have loved her for around 23 years and she STILL amazeds me with her voice. It is wonderful how the UK puts out some of the most soulful voices in music.
Alison's is based on the original as composed by Ewan McColl. Roberta Flack, who was classically trained, slowed it down and it worked much better, turning a beautiful song into a masterpiece. It is interesting to see someone do the original. It reminds me of just how much of an improvement Flack's rearrangement was. It had a greater haunting depth, whereas the original version was in some ways a more technical song, well composed but not as strong.
Excellent song. Alisons voice has such power & depth. Her album 'voice' is just awesome. She's an excellent artist & would give any of todays artists a run for their money! And she is sooo sexy! I'd love a night of wild passion with her, she is gorgeous!
If Celine's voice soars, pitching ice blue song to quivered glass frozen peaks, as cold as her beauty. Alison's visits a different terrain.
Her voice is shifted to the rich radiant pastures below, as fresh and fertile as the dark roar of ice melt torrents over a gravel bed, like silky sun speared rivulets sparkling in a spring melt.
While passion moves to glass glazed pools beyond, to sit with cooling pastures green..
She awed at nature's dark divine, gives silken shadows slipped from time.
I love love love this version and i also love Roberta Flack's version. I see them as two totally songs depending on who's singing them and that's what i love about it. I culd listen to alison all day.... which i do do actually.
Naturally it's a personal choice but I feel Celine Dion's version is far too much about her showing off her vocal range and not enough about what the words are saying. Moyet nails it for me, because you can hear she's been there and believes in what she's singing. Celine Dion has a wonderful voice, technically, but leaves me a little cold. I find her fake, emotionally, and all the technical skill in the world can't hide that. That's my opinion anyway, plenty disagree and adore Celine!
Ewan Maccoll (Kirsty's father) wrote this song for his wife Peggy Seeger, a folk singer like him. Moyet's version is more in line with the way it was written.
I can't stand Celine Dion...she is a great vocalist but far too over-produced, there's nothing raw about her. Kirsty MacColl and Alison Moyet are 2 of my favourite female artists of which I have many. There are several things which connect Alison to Kirsty this song being one, obviously it's writer Kirsty's father. Another is Pete Glenister, a long time collaborator (producer/writer) of both artists.
Remember that this was originally written and performed in the fifties by Ewan McColl in the harsh, nasal style of English folk music. Alison keeps closely faithful to the original while softening it and adding her own powerful mood.
Yeah, DC sang it with this version in mind. On the show they did not give Alison any credit, but that is cool, she knows she created this version, she recorded this well over 10 years ago, not sure about how old this video is though.
Fantastic. I saw her in Dublin. What an original voice. Alison you are great. Out there, not with the best, you are he best and you were great in Dublin.
Alison has one of the most amazing voices of all time. So many beautiful versions of this classic song, but this is, in my very humble opinion, by far the best.
Jesus.. where do I begin. I absolutely love this woman, since I was a teen and that is well over 20 years ago. She's got me through very difficult times in my life.
Nothing short of miraculous...she does it better than the original in my opinion.

Great interpretation and arrangement of a classic...and "spot on" vocals as always. Very nice.

I prefer Celine's polished, classical version. Moyet may have some originality but it is not the original song anymore.

I`d not heard Alisons version of this great song before, she`s really made it individual....It`s really growing on me!!
My other favourite cover, that`s a bit different, is Marcia Griffiths reggae version :o)

I`ve not heard Alison`s version before....so I`ve just played it 4 times and it`s growing on me :o)
Its deffinately different to most other female covers of it but thats not a bad thing....it makes quite a refreshing change :o)
My own personal favourite version is the seldom heard reggae cover by Marcia Griffiths :o)
