@kayaks41 That's Paul Quinichette. Ben Webster is sitting closest to the piano and doesn't solo. It certainly looks like PQ isn't wearing a neck strap, but it's visible when you see him in profile.
I love this. Ben is from the Coleman Hawkins school and Paul Quinichette is from the Lester Young school. It's like another Prez and Hawk combo on stage. Both top notch players.
i guess that's PQ on the first tenor solo? don't look or sound like Ben. can't believe they didn't have some tenors trading phrases ... great vid though. Thanks!
They used to call Dflat Hoss flat back in the day, lol. My sax teacher told me because Frank Foster's nickname was Hoss, but I dunno if that's how the name came about. Hoss flat was "the key" to play in in any blues chart. I.E. Thing's Ain't What They Used To Be, One 'O Clock Jump, and pretty much any other blues played by big bands. The other common key was F.
Oh Yeah! So glad I found this! This 14 year old has found the greatest Swing he ever thought could be. So glad ya posted this ma man.

The original title of the tune was "Blue Balls." It was changed to "One O-Clock Jump" during a live broadcast by the Basie band.

My father has a old album-Quinichette and Coltrane together. Simply good real jazz. A lot better than this "smooth jazz" thats out today.

Tune is One O'Clock Jump and is very close to original Basie version of 1930s:
1st two choruses in F (piano) and then into Db for rest.
