I just now got the deep irony in this scene after having seen it a billion times before. The quote they keep saying "blessed are the cheesemakers" is supposed to be "blessed are the peacemakers." At the same time two people begin arguing with each other and Brian says, "Lay off him." Brian is actually displaying peacemaking qualities by trying to calm down the argument.
Underneath the character humor and silliness there are quite deep social criticisms and hidden irony in Monty Python films.
@musiclover9361 No shit? What are you a 18 year old girl with an attitude problem? I watched this movie a lot as a kid, and sometimes children don't see deep irony in things. Now after having matured and watched the movie again I saw it and appreciated it. Why do you have to have an attitude about the fact that I pointed something out that I enjoyed? "No shit?" lol. You probably didn't even notice what I saw :P Fuck off :D oh and have a good day... "No shit?" lol.
@anonwoohoo You clearly don't know John Cleese's humour if you didn't get my joke. Would you have been happier if I'd said it with more verbosity? viz. "Well, what would you expect to see out of a Torquay hotel window, madam - Sidney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Great herds of Wildebeeste sweeping majestically across the Serengeti?" - John Cleese in 'Fawlty Towers', instead of saying, "No Shit!" Get a grip and stop thinking you're being mocked. This is Monty Python, ffs!
I love this part if only because i imagine that when jesus did sermonize {i'm not sure of the actual word} people in the back were probably thinking as well "what did he just say? I don't know i can't hear a word over here."
@epicfillerman yes, blessed are the train drivers, and the signalmen and the wheeltappers! I like trains too, but don't think they had trains back then :)
