I think you mean mario kart ds. Duble Dash was for the gamecube.

Double dash had online you just needed a modem adapter(reason why nobody heard of it, hardly anyone owns a modem nowadays)

yeah but it wasn't actually built in to the game was it? Didin't you need to sort of hack it?

No, it was official. You set up the game then hit power on the modem adapter and it let you connect to a small server. It was legal, you can still buy one.
