Copper works the best. If you do a search you can find copper nails on the net. Just beat a nail into a broom handle and shape a tip. The copper doesnt last long and the handle will eventually break, but it would get you started. You can try a set screw to hold your copper but being tapped into soft wood it wont hold long.
Nice process on structural hardening. That is actually a nice process for metal working.
