WARNING: Your Maxtor is over 365 days old and is actually in good health (holy shit, that's rare), are you sure you wish to keep booting and put your data at risk? (Y / n)
looking at this precise same problem on a client's drive.
I don't have the technology to move the multi-platter safely to another box, at least try to get some of the data. Looks like the data is destroyed within a certain range. However, there is probably still a good deal of data remaining.
As far as opening drives without clean rooms, I've had success using dust remover spray right before you close the lid.
You could also fix this by replacing the arm, but that's a whole insane procedure
i have the diamondmax 21 500gb. when i open Hard Drive Inspector (a program) it says that my hard drive is in a bad condition -__- Reliability = 39%, Performance = 39%, Error Resistance=39%.... this is bullshit!!!!!!!! i had this drive for less than a year, and i have a western digital 250gb drive, had it for less than a year too and it shows 100% for everything....... screw this, im not gona get a maxtor or seagate hard drive.........ever!
ElectroHouseR818: My 160GB DiamondMax 21 reports that it's at 70% in all fields, having been bought in January and being used as a spare for one of the same make that failed. But it also reports that the UDMA is not the fastest the drive supports.
You might want to check what version of UDMA your motherboard is using before judging the drive on its rating. But either way, Maxtor and Seagate's drives seem to be dropping like a plane whose engines have died.
Yea, As soon as the screw and top cover was removed, there was no hope.
Tolerances to foreign particles in side modern hdd's are so minute, that even the tiniest spec of dust barely visible to the human eye can destroy the entire drive!
Why all the hard drives when are dead move the heads across the whole platter over and over again and do that "clicking" sound? Could someone please explain it to me?
I wish that hdd manufacturers would implement a system that detects contact with the platters and shut's off teh drive permanently until you send it away for servicing. Data recovery would be a hell of a nicer job if that was the case:(
BUT, as we all know, data recovery is too expensive for the average joe (up to 3000$ easily!) and they know that we will be forced to buy another or send if back for warranty repairs (if still under warranty).
impossible to fix. it is when a HDD crashes and the arm touches the platter. when your HDD operates, it never touches the platter. it only floats over it, and reads whats there. when it touches the platter, the HDD is useless
Leave your machines on, don't power down your drives, thats one of the things that can cause failure - but then again, thats what backups (or RAID) is for. =)
I s it a good idea to have a hard drive aspins down at all, lets say of an hour of inactivity?? for thoughs who lkeave their computers on alot??? or should they not leave it on when not in use at all
Its like turning your car engine off at a stoplight. The more you do it, the less the drive will last. Just have a backup or set a cron job to touch the drive for you every 5 mins... (thats what I did).
If you have a Western Digital drive - google for "western digial auto spindown" and you will see what I am talking about. If you are Mac OSX or *nix, you can 'touch' a file on that drive every "X" minutes to keep it from spinning down.
No, this drive failed inside an External Enclosure (USB Drive). The problem with these (Maxtor and WD Included) is they spin the drives down after 30 mins of inactivity - then spins them up to use - this wears the life/heads down dramatically.
That is bullshit. The only thing that spins down drives is Windows or the OS. WD and Seagate drives are NOT encoded like that in the firmware. You can tell your OS to never spin down the drive, which is something that is recommended you do.
Are you joking me? I work at a local ISP dealing with servers and their components. We have had both internal and external drives in use on our co-located boxes. So here is a protip since you cleary are lost... Desktop(Right-click) -> Screen Saver(Tab) -> Power(Button) -> TURN OFF HARD DISKS: NEVER.
This applies to both internal AND external drives. No external drive has firmware like that, and I have worked with Mybooks personally. So there you go. Until you are working on a CE/CS major, you can kinda need to read up on how computers work a bit and understand the difference between the firmware controller and the OS Hard Drive Controller.
All I can say is go Google it - I sent a reply directly to your YouTube account.
Heres what one person said:
I know what you're describing, the MyBook drives have a built-in auto-spindown function which shuts the drive down after approx 10 minutes of inactivity, which is independent of Mac OS X.
Don't push a college degree when you don't research what you say. Just goes to show kids in college these days only gain "book smarts" and none of the valuable "real world experience".
All you gotta google is: "western digial auto spindown"
Yea all of that spinning down then spinning back up again really takes it's toll. And to think... all of this time I programmed my WD Protege 40gb drive to spin down every THREE minutes. lol. I guess it really dosen't matter on drives that have load/unload ramps that take the read/write heads off of the platters during spin down (such as IBM & Hitaci).
I agree with you, except having it stop after three mins - although spin up/down is like starting and stopping you engine at every stoplight. And since WD/Seagate/Hitachi/etc don't have any warranty of data - they might have done that. Increases revenue in their pocket without risk and most 'regular' users do not know the risk of constant spin up/down.
Why thank you ;D The auto spin-down really only affects External Drives unless otherwise programmed by the O.S. I think that more people should be aware of this as it causes more ware on drives, shortes their life span and the losses of valueable data. I have a question too. Are there any other Check Disk programs out there other than Windows Check Disk, just wondering.
