Older shotgun rounds where brass cased and some handguns had incased bullets, like the 7.62 nagant. actually, shotgun shells can have many variants the most common shotgun shell contains tiny lead pellets which spread. But over the years this has changed into many different forms. You can get 'solids' which have 1 larger lead or rubber ball in them.

Farmers also used to make salt rounds for anyone who trespassed they could fire salt into their ass which wouldn't kill but sting like shit.
