I can't judge as a 100% proffy, I can only share my feelings. IMHO, some great interpreters, as Richter, communicate their emotions not so blatant, but restrained, as befits a nobleman of highest sample. This doesn't mean their emotional content is lower. Often behind the inhuman technically immaculate shape ordinary listener can't see all deep emotions -they are depict more chaste, philosophical, without tearing shirt on his chest, tears, groans and cries. It's just a different style.
I don't think Richter's interpretation is in the tradition of the great romantic masters but I definitely enjoyed it. His tempos are up a bit up but he carries it off. Well - he's Richter!
conception-wise, what an extraordinary piece of music. It's got all the varied content of an opera, an play, a film - it's got it all. Liszt out-did himself with this piece.
Yes, we cannot dispute his quality, but we can, subjectively, like or dislike his performances. However, I never make mistake if I want to know composer`s main idea, when I decide listening to Richter. Frequently, I dispute Gould`s performance of Bach. I just don`t like it.
Personally i don't consider this performance as the best, I think Richter sometimes is too subjective here. btw, i;ve heard his another version{ i think from Moscow,1965}-absolutely great!!! About Glenn- I think 50% of his Bach- just incredible, 50%- matter of taste...
I wish a knew how much recordings from the sonata and richter there are.. I Dont' think there is somebody with a better sense of structur and dramaturgy, but among his reordings there are differences to find...

Richter plays this with great clarity! Without a smudge or smear. And who knows, maybe this is the way Liszt played it!

Listen to pogorelich version , pogorelich play this piece behind the music ,he put all his soul to the piece and you know why?
pogorelich plays sonata liszt to his died wife / teacher.
Richter plays this sonata regular without something that you expect just passages and piano forte.......
four worlds: i dont like it .

100% agree. Pogorelich's version is behind the music, maybe the greatest interpretation ever!
