This was back in the day when the Big Ten was still stuck with just running the ball. Woody Hayes 3 yards and a cloud of dust is why Woody didn't win more national championships and got ownes by the Pac 10 in the 70's. Same with Bo and Michigan it took getting hammered year after year by the Pac 10 for the Big 10 to realize that the passing game was here to stay and that they better learn how to do it too.
I am sure it had nothing to do with the fact that the big ten treated that like a vacation and sent these kids out there three weeks ahead and took them to disneyland, knotts berry farm and etc. they werent into the game as much as they should thus explains the thrashing OSU put on UCLA early in the year when they were there for one day without the distractions. it must be hard for the pac eight to play in their backyard every bowl game.
How 'bout the fact that back in those days (and to a certain extent, even now), tOSU and Miss-again had no real competition in the Big Ten (aside from each other, of course) so when they had to play against a CHAMPION from another conference they couldn't cope because playing the bunch of pansies that were in the Big Ten in those days didn't prepare them for playing a REAL team outside of their own sorry conference. I think that explanation works as well as ANY.
Yes you are right about the Big Ten in the seventies but I dont think the Pac eight had much back then. But again, look at the non-conference records of OSU and UM and then see what they do when they go on vacation to play in the Rose Bowl. Now if you put into play homefield advantage OSU would have a few more national championships. Before the seventies the Pac 8 was thinking of canceling the ties with the Rose Bowl because they got tired of getting hammered every year by the Big Ten.
Yeah, I've heard that excuse by the Big Ten more times than I could count. Sounds pretty lame, to me. I mean, okay, sure, *MAYBE* there's some truth to it when you're talking about Big Ten teams playing USC or UCLA. But what about the years when they played a (then-)Pac-8 team that WASN'T from the L.A. area (and still lost)? Seems to me that the trip to Pasadena would be no more of a "vacation" for those Big Ten teams than it would be for those non-L.A. Pac-8/Pac-10 teams.
Factor in travel and the fact that we midwestern boys have never even been to CA or dreamed about it. Remember airfare was expensive then and only the privileged got to go somewhere exotic like LA....if you can call it exotic. Now the only other team you can be talking about is Washington and yes they kicked butt with Warren Moon. Now when the Big Ten was FAR superior to the Pac Eight it wasnt as big of factor but when things became even it showed. excuse yes, lame maybe, USC-OSU still big draw
Agree with you on that last point, for sure. I have a great deal of respect for Jim Tressel and the job he's done at tOSU. I wouldn't say that the Buckeyes are my favorite team, or anything like that, but I respect them, which is more than I can say about my feelings for Miss-again. My two favorite Big Ten football teams, however, are Iowa's and Penn State's. But I respect tOSU and I have no beef when they win the Big Ten.
People here are calling for Tressel's head and its not warranted. Since Tres came hes had two weak links, O line coach and O coordinator and they happen to be the same person. When he stops hiring family and friends they will be ok. Tressel is the best coach since Woody and wins 80% of his games and they want him fired? As far as respect I respect every team except one....Miami..thugs that cant spell their name. Crack down on academics and they will lose half of their team.
Look....when we played USC we usually played against one the top teams if not the team in the country. All I am saying if it wasnt for the distractions the outcomes could have been different. You cant compare flying an hour from the west coast to flying out from some cornfield. Sorry there just isnt the same feel and if you never lived in the heartland you will never know what its like to go see the promised land. Now going south isnt as much as a big deal. The Big Ten is 14-13 vs SEC in bowls.
What a terrible loss for the Bucks- maybe the worst loss in the history of the program after the Florida debacle. It is cool that both teams are wearing their home uniforms.
Yeah, I just saw another video showing 'bama vs. UCLA from "back in the day" and both teams were allowed to wear their home jerseys in that game, too. I also remember that when USC played UCLA back then that both teams were allowed to wear their home jerseys no matter where the game was being played. Then the spoilsport NCAA came along and decreed that one team has to wear the home jersey and the other its road jersey in all contests. Jerks.
Crushed them actually, 41-20. Part of it was overconfidence- I read an interview w/Brian Bashnagel who said they didnt respect UCLA as much the second time around. Part of it was that UCLA was a better team in Jan. than they were in October. The Bruins were talented & well-coached and made adjustments.
Also, it's tough to beat a good team twice in the same season, let alone twice on the road. And w/John Sciarra, Wally Henry, Wendell Tyler, Randy Cross, Manu Tuiasasopo & Cliff Frazier, plus Vermeil on the sideline, UCLA was very good. The way OSU lost is what hurts. They were handled in this game.
I remember reading once that the Buckeyes DOMINATED the first half of the 1976 Rose Bowl, at least statistically, but found themselves only slightly ahead at halftime. Maybe UCLA took comfort from that, and as you stated, made adjustments that helped them win in the end.
Yup, OSU dominated in the 1st half but led only 3-0. At halftime UCLA ditched their deep passing game and went with short passes against OSU's man-to-man coverage. It worked to the tune of 366 2nd half yards (!) I love Woody, but Vermeil whupped his butt in this game.
Yes, Wendell Tyler has been appearing in schools to talk to today's youth about better choices. As a former NFL star, and Super Bowl and Pro Bowl participant, he has the background to effect positive change in young people.
Woody Hayes said he was out-coached in this game, and he was right. Vermeil went in at halftime, made the necessary changes, and in the second half the Bruins opened up huge holes in the previously rock-solid Buckeye D-line. I was there--class of '67--and it was a glorious day. Sitting high up in the east end zone, watching Wendell Tyler break to the side line and then back to the middle to score is something I'll never forget.
He does a disco bump with the goal post...ah the 70's.

Yeah, didn't the Buckeyes beat UCLA IN L.A. early that season? What the heck happened to them in the Rose Bowl? Overconfidence?

He was famous that day. I think he rushed for over two hundred yards in that game. He went on to have a nice NFL carer with the Rams and 49ers.

The Buckeyes must've taken the Bruins lightly after thrashing them earlier in the season IN L.A.
