great vid but the custom sounds this thing can pump out blow the presets away massively. Especially the ones that don't use any 'PCM' parts. More modern use of the D-50. Great synth. Have 2 of them :)
does anyone know what synth was used for the nintendo 64, especially in games like wave race 64 and zelda oot, really enjoyed the violin synth used in n64 games. Does anybody know? kinda sounds like the part on clip from 3.06 Thanks

Understand that Rick Wakeman has been inspired of this great synth! What a feeling!! :) He use that for example on "Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe". Great!
@1975MAICO1975 VST's have their place, and they're incredibly versatile and sound great!! but, hardware just sounds better! I use both.... but I'd prefer to have hardware versions of all my VST's, despite not having the space
@edi1023 I have read an article about David Wise (Super Nintendo composer) and he sad that his favorite synths are Yamaha DX7 and Roland D-50. When i listened this demo i thought that some patches he used for creating a Donkey Kong Soundtrack
D-50 was released in 1987, not in 1983-1984 (DX7 was released in 1983, remember !). Technically speaking, there were earlier synths with on-board effects : the goold ol' Elka Synthex and its powerful built-in chorus unit… or the 1972's famous Eminent 310U (which I'd rather call a "fully polyphonic analog synth" rather than an organ) and it's built-in Orbitone tremolo/chorus AND reverb units.
I own one of those as well and I'm very fond of it. I've noticed that your D50 is very responsive to aftertouch and velocity - mine got dull over years and I have to press really hard to "squeeze" tone change out of Alien Intro patch, for example ;)
I hope to find some time to get it fixed some day :)

never had an oportunity to own one, wish i could have because alot of the new ones even though they are better, this one here, had some amazing sounds that you cant get from alot of the new ones
Hey im kinda new to all this stuff and i was wondering if anyone can explain to me about it..
If you buy this keyboard, what do you have? can you just plug it in and play or what? are there presets that you can play from on the keyboard?
ive seen sound cards (i think thats how you call them) on ebay and stuff with say "latin sounds" or "orchestral sounds" , so does that mean you have to buy these or are they like extension packages..?
@shmeldrick The sound cards you mention are more for people who specifically play that style of music. All synths have preset sounds that cover a massive array of styles. The newer synths have so many sounds & ways to adjust the preset sounds that there are endless possabilities. With older synths there is usually a risk factor as parts get rare but usually they're built like tanks. Well cared for synths last a lifetime. For beginners a Yamaha DJX blue synth is a superb starter about £50 on Ebay
@shmeldrick You would need a midi interface cable & a bit of knowledge. Search engines usually give good step by step ways of using midi devices. I don't mess with that stuff myself. Creating your own patches is far better but knowing how to save them properly can be tough on certain machines if you don't have a manual. Although most manuals can be dowloaded as PDF for free. The Roland D-50 is a synth I've been thinking of getting myself but the Yamaha MM6 or Yamaha AN1x are taking my fancy.
@shmeldrick The Yamaha DJX & a few other cheap synths have built in speakers. If you buy a synth with no speakers which 90% dont have. Just purchase a cheap £1.50 lead to connect to a TV's surround sound system via the line in. Mine is a 1000 Watts Panasonic so my neighbours hate me. A set of cheap headphones also does the trick & is perhaps the best option as you can crank up the volume. The Roland D-50 in this video is an amazing synth but getting rare in good working order & more costly too.
Today's synths seem to get tiring fast, because you can do glorious patterns and parts with a press of one key. I mean, who can handle that for an extended period of time? The instruments like the D-50 or DX7 meant to be played by a keyboardist. You actually ought to play those instruments on the keyboard, and that was and will always be interesting. To me, the automated arpeggiator-like features single-handedly killed the excitement in synthesizers. Long live the DX7, D-50 and Casio CZ/VZ
@maccagrabme Well, I don't know, I keep going back and forth in this digital vs. analog war, if i had a grand to spend i would pay that much for a JP-8. It is a fine sounding synthesizer, and it is also very sexy looking of course. Then again, it would probably just take up space, like my JX-8P is right now. Thinking of selling it.
@UnchainTheNight1 I made the mistake of selling gear in the past, I know you cannot hang on to everything if space is tight but have a good think about the JX otherwise you might regret it. I refuse to sell gear nowadays.
Breakthrough synth, probably as revolutionary as the DX7 was.......Those times of astounding developments in synth technology are now long gone.......
@GNeuman I must agree synth sound technologies evolution slowed down, but now, the real developments are the interface and sequencing - take a look at monome, ableton, elektron, kaosspad, lemur - all of those greatly revolutionized the way music can be played
@phlykr I completely agree. I'm thinking of how I can personally give Ableton funding to continue there progress. They've completely changed my workflow of composing and arranging.
@GNeuman I think modern sounds are far more complex but it gets to a point where you have to ask, can I use this in a track? I think we are spoilt nowadays, a synth like V-Synth can do almost all the sounds of previous digital synths. The reason we might prefer older synths is because they had an individual character and the artists had to get a lot out of little whereas todays synths are harder to distinguish between. Personally I think the V-Synth is a leap forwards in synth tech.
@maccagrabme If you want to leap even further, it has to be an Access Virus. I have been into synth's for over 25 years, my first was an SH-101 and the Virus is the only synth that truly breaks new ground for me. Most patch are usable and inspirational and the sound quality is outstanding. But I have to say that seeing as I've spent $6000 on 2x Ti2 Keyboards : o

@GNeuman Yamaha and their FM syntesis have so much unused potential. Look what Native instruments made out of the FM8. FM8 can make any sound! I would like to see it go hardware with knobs and buttons for all functions. :)
